DRM is 0% security or should I say 100% failure, please give me ONE example of a game that wasn't cracked yet.

Huh? Never said there was. Did I somehow imply it?

I don't see what's "slippery". Points 1 to 5 are from real life already. Should I remind you about Spore, Bioshock, Mass Effect?

Points 1 to 5 don't bother me.

Could limited installs have been possible without gamers bending over to online activation (the "you are on the internet right now" argument)? Is limited installs ok for you? Is it ok being forced to install steam or GFWL and create online accounts when you buy the box? Or how about DLC, isn't the trend clear for you yet?

Again, all fine with me.

Of course you did not imply it, it was only to show you that comparing DRM with locks and fences is flawed.

The point is that 100% security isn't necessary for a successful outcome in either case.

Please tell me more about the successful outcome of DRM. :D Well, 0% is not 100% so I suppose you are somewhat right. :D

I'm sure that it doesn't bother you and that all about EA is fine with you. :D

Case closed.

I'd still appreciate an answer on how regions without a local release date will be handled (i.e., Japan). Should I be asking for a refund on my pre-order, or will the game be playable on the 15th?

That is something quite different though - release control is just a prettified self-extracting archive with an encrypted payload; since the key isn't published before the release there's no way to break it - different release dates still pose a problem though; if nothing else works you could just extract the the US-version in a virtual machine and distribute the image.

The problem with DRM is as follows: If you have, say, a DRM-protected book then you cannot just hand the user an encrypted document without a key - the user will probably be upset because he can't read the book. Regardless of the encryption you use and where you store the keys, there will be a decrypted copy of the file on the user's computer at some point; if nothing else works the user could just take pictures of his monitor to get a DRM-free copy of the book.

With software, the problem is that a user can run arbitrarily modified programs on his computer. In theory any disc check, online registration, etc can be removed. AFAIK the proposed solution to this problem is Trusted Computing, and I suspect that this is the reason they discontinued PS3 "other OS" feature/bug. Also, cf kernel rootkit.

Posted this in the wrong thread before I believe so I'll try here...

About the DRM check.

Do we have a clear answer on the question if it's dependent on WHERE you bought the game or is it where I'm actually stationed at....

Lets say I buy the game in a country where it's on sale BUT it's official releasedate has yet to come and I go home to my country where the game just been released. Can I then play the game?

Hope you see where Im going with this haha

No you can't. It doesn't matter where you buy it. It matters where you are trying to play it. If you buy in America then take it home and play in the UK before the release date it won't work.

Dragon Age 2 Physical & Digital PC/Mac DRM are as follows:

  • You can play offline thereafter - the game will NOT require any subsequent login checks.  If online, a game ownership check happens each time you play

Does this apply to bonus content as well? Can I play offline with all of my bonus content enabled?

And so, as usual, only paying customers are inconvienenced.  And no Bioware employee will say anything because they know it's true, and they still push this crap on us.

DRM fails and is pointless. When will companies realize this?

To play my purchase copy legally, I will have to pack up my PC, travel to a neighboring town friend's house who has Internet, and hook back up my PC to install the game. Thanks!

 So they say:

Dragon Age 2 Release Control (non-Steam versions)
Does not use securom.
It does not install anything to the PC.
Sole purpose is to check with a server to validate whether the game release date has passed or not.
It completely removes itself after the game release date has passed.
You will not be able to play until that date has passed.
Dates & times are set to the retail street date per country.[/list]

but trying to activate the game I just picked up from gamestop, at 00:00 EST i get this message

I'm more pissed that they claimed they were not going to use securom, and then did -- its a bit of blatant bait and switch. You can't actually make a claim like that in your promotional materials, and then do something else -- its actually illegal here in the states.

Well, I decided today (after reading that the DRM had toned down) to pre-order it. I am leaving now to go pick it up from Gamestop along with the guide.

Thanks BioWare for toning down the DRM, it's not perfect but it's better.

Why exactly do we have to wait until 3 am here in the East Coast to play a game I just purchased. As far as I know it is March 8th 2011 here and the Xbox/PS3 versions are working just fine (friend of mine is actually playing 360 version as I speak.) Since when did EST time start running off PST time, defeats the purpose of having time zone if you always go off of 1. Seriously, why do eastern coast residents have to wait an extra 3 hours.

I'm having the same problem, does anyone have any suggestions on how I can play it now? I'm getting anxious:(

So much for BioWare saying that the game unlocks at midnight in each respective timezone. What the **** is this ****.

Oh great! I am installing now but I guess I can't play until 2 AM (another hour and a half) since I am in the Central Time Zone.

I was wondering if it was midnight for all time zones or just a specific one. I was hoping BioWare was on Eastern time because they would be an hour ahead of me and the game would have been ready to go at 11 PM my time.

No, its PST, so 2AM your time.  I'm in the same boat as you.

Also, if this game has no securom, how come the release date checker (which epically FAILS in terms of promised release time) mentions the securom support page?

That's what I said, 2 AM  my time is when I will get to play.

Anyway,  I uninstalled the demo to avoid any conflicts. I hope that wasn't anything in the demo that could have transferred over.

Yea, so now getting it at Midnight is a let down. The world needs to update it's technology. Or advertise better. "Oh by the way PC versions of (name here) won't be available for play until (insert time/region)" OH WAIT! Blizzard already handle this well. Every time WoW has launched it has been ready in its respective time zones. I got WoTLK at midnight and was playing by 1am. Like most other companies Blizzard is in PST time.....

So here it is, installed and ready to....wait. Indeed, my reading skills must be off because I swear it says Securom is running the release software. It's late, maybe my eyes are out of whack!

You are right to see Securom sitting there with a maniacle smile staring back at you.
