Below are the details of the final version of DRM that will be used with Dragon Age 2 for PC and Mac.

We appreciate your patience and feedback on this.  DRM is always a topic of much debate, even internally.  It requires a delicate balance between providing some level of IP protection while minimizing the inconvenience or intrusion to a player’s experience.  These decisions are not made lightly - and a lot of time and effort was dedicated to ensuring that the system for DA2 is skewed to the player side of the experience.  It is as follows:

Dragon Age 2 Physical & Digital PC/Mac DRM are as follows:

  • No disc check, you do not need the disc in drive to play.
  • No limit on the total number of PCs you can install the game on.
  • There is a limit to the number of unique/different PCs that can play the game within a time window (if online) [5 PCs in 24hrs].
  • After each new install there is a 1-time online check needed the next time you play, requiring a log in to your EA account to verify game ownership.  If you are a member of these forums, you already have an EA account – just use the same email/password.
  • You can play offline thereafter - the game will NOT require any subsequent login checks.  If online, a game ownership check happens each time you play.
Steam versions use Steam DRM, no other DRM is added, which means:
  • No disc check, it is used for digital game versions purchased from Steam only.
  • No limit to the total number of PCs you can install the game on.
  • There is a limit to the number of unique/different PCs that can play the game at any one time (if online) [1 PC].
  • Each install requires logging into your Steam account to verify game ownership.
  •  You can play offline thereafter.  If online, a game ownership check happens each time you play.
  • Steam pre-loads use Steam release control – you will not be able to play until the release day/time has passed for that region.
Dragon Age 2 Release Control (non-Steam versions)
  • Does not use securom.
  • It does not install anything to the PC.
  • Sole purpose is to check with a server to validate whether the game release date has passed or not.
  • It completely removes itself after the game release date has passed.
  • You will not be able to play until that date has passed.
  • Dates & times are set to the retail street date per country.
Common questions:

Does this apply to consoles?
  • No.  This is applies to PC/Mac only.
What about Mac/Cider, does it use Securom?
  • Dragon Age: Origins for Mac/Cider used Securom.  Dragon Age 2 for Mac/Cider will NOT use Securom and instead it will use the same non-Steam system listed above.
A PC review mentions Securom, what gives?
  • All EA preview & review game builds sent to press use Securom which is where the assumption came from.  The Dragon Age 2 actual retail & download version of the game that you will play will not use Securom, it uses one of the systems above.
If you have other questions please feel free to post here – as always, a reminder  that this thread is NOT for the general discussion of DRM, the pros and cons of other DRM systems or any talk about circumventing DRM (which is against the rules of conduct and will be disciplined as such). Thanks. :)

Chris,
You say it doesn't use SecuROM, but my Signature Edition seems to have installed it anyway I'm assuming because it is preventing me from opening the application and says specifically "Please visit the support website to get more information: https://support.securom.com/" I understand it's giving me this error because I'm in Florida and my midnight is not the same as Alberta so it's making me wait till 3am Eastern, but I'm concerned it's put this software on my computer.

I can stand a delayed release, but saying it won't include SecuROM, and then it includes it...is just...well...depressing.

I guess we could give Bioware the benefit of the doubt and maybe they only used some Securom software to manage the one time online activation?

As for the unlock, Bioware did say in the unlock stickied thread that the US PC version would not be able to be played until midnight PST, meaning 3AM EST, 2AM CST, and 1AM MST. They did make an error in not updating the OP in that thread to reflect that information, meaning a lot of people assumed it would midnight local time.

There has to be some kind of explanation. Like maybe it had securom and they took it off but that message remains.

I don't know.....sigh...but they did say that the release tool would remove itself.

On the bright side, I think there is an advantage to all of us counting the clock and going to start the game at the same time.

Thanks TopHat.

Another favour: Are you able to screenshot any files that may be left in /AppData/Local/Temp/mtka_tmp//? Reason for this is that the files relating to the screenshot you provided should be there. I say this based on past experiences w/ other SecuROM-Protected games.

It's where the Release Date Check would have left files before DA2 would 'removing them' as per Bioware/EA's explanations.

This is my guess: If they do remove them, it's on the basis that the Release Date Check executed is successful. If not, files will be left behind until the next round. In either case it doesn't help when you know that Registry Keys RE: Release Date Check will remain unless validated by Bioware...

but trying to activate the game I just picked up from gamestop, at 00:00 EST i get this message

This application cannot be used until the official release date has been reached. Please wait until the official release date and restart the application at that time. Click CANCEL to abort the process.   Please visit the support website to get more information: https://support.securom.com/
Your release date will be: Tuesday, March 08, 2011, 03:00

I thought they weren't using securom, and it says above that the game is out 00:00

I'm getting the same thing... so much for going to the midnight release.

Yeah something else about this game that GameStop did was I pre-ordered this game back in October through the signature edition promo they had about the game selling for 49.99. Well I've been checking this recently many times on my pre-order online through gamestop and said total cost was 49.99 but I get there and buy it and it was 59.99. I asked about it and the manager responsed, "the 49.99 cost was before EA upped the price to the version to 59.99". So I was like whatever I want the game but tomorrow im going back and asking why the heck did the price not change with the information on the gamestop website. I had no way of know the price was going to be 10$ more until I was actually purchasing and the thing is I pre-ordered it for 49.99 so I better get 10$ or gamestop has lost my business.

I'm in. Just installed the Black Emporium manually and about to start it back up. The rest of the DLC has to be downloaded in game.

Funny thing though, it started in a window. Must have missed that in the configuration earlier.

Aww, come on - same thing happenned with Dead Space 2, I cannot understand why would they have different activation dates for US and EU versions of the game. Now I still have to wait a horrible 2 days before I can finally enjoy it. Can at least someone try to explain why would they need to do this? I'd much appriciate if a BioWare/EA dev explained this. :(

Ah... the box... it teases me... on the shelf... mocking me...
