That's acceptable to me. Thanks for the final details.

*edit*

Now that I've thought about it some more.  I too would like to know what  "If on-line" means.  If it means that if I have logged into my EA account while playing -- to update profiles, achievements etc -- then that too would be OK by me.

But if it means that the game will search for a connection each time I play and if it finds one will check on me, then that is not OK.

Thank you for posting the information, Chris. I am thankful that you were able to clear up the confusion about SecuROM inclusion and that you dropped the mandatory phone-home requirements.

It sounds all right from what I understand of DRM, which is not a lot. Thank you for info.

So i called EA and they said you should get the game either a day earlier to download it to have it ready for the day of launch (Digital copies) or you will be able to access it on the day of release for download.

(Hope its the first)

Well this version of the drm is better since it doesn't require calls back home every so often.

But since it still requires having an internet connection and registering the game on an account to even install and play it. I will not be buying da2 . I don't believe single player games should require an internet connection for anything. So while these drm requirements are not very heavy. They go beyond what I am willing to do.

So when I install it AND the internet happens to be out, I will be incapable of playing it because it needs to go online?

Not too thrilled about that.

While I agree it's tedious in a way, I don't agree with that explanation.

I have no problem with a single online check, and since I'm always online I also have no problem with a constant online check, but I just don't like that you HAVE to do it on an install or can't play because I don't always have internet when I install things.

Thanks for the info, Chris. Seems very reasonable and in line with what we saw in DA:O.

If online, a game ownership check happens each time you play.

Chris, what does the above mean? Does this mean if you're on-line you have to be logged into your account in-game in order to play (i.e. you can't log out of your account and play if you're connected to the internet)?

I'm curious about this, too.  I mean, obviously I could block DA2's access through my firewall - what effect would that have?  Does this just mean there's an authentication check every time I log in to my EA account through the game (which would be used to uploading game data and the like), and that's how they'll enforce the 5 PCs in any 24 hour period rule?

Under what circumstances will the game check authentiticity?  I need to make sure I'm allowing the game to do that so it doesn't lock itself down.

Thanks for the information - this deals with most of the concerns that I, at least, had.

The one that I'm curious about:

Chris Priestly wrote...

Dragon Age 2 Digital DRM (non-Steam versions)

  • Does not use securom.
  • It does not install anything to the PC.
  • Sole purpose is to check with a server to validate whether the game release date has passed or not.
  • It completely removes itself after the game release date has passed.
  • You will not be able to play until that date has passed.
  • Dates & times are set to the retail street date per country.

It sounds like DA2 Digital DRM does not have any checks except for the retail date check, which gets removed once it verifies it is past?  This means that the Digital DRM can also be run offline? Or is there any online (connection / ownership check) requirements (after the release data check removal)?

The reason I ask is that the Physical specifically mentions "Can be run offline. Checks ownership if online", but the Digital doesn't mention anything similiar.

YESSSS!!!!

Well, that is a plus, but I still don't like having to log in when I install it.  At least it's not as bad as I thought, though.

Small edit.  I had the "release control" section titled as DA2 Digital DRM. This is now correctly titled.

Sorry, my bad.

you can actually remove your CD key here on the social site. it's under my games => register games I think. that should allow you to re sell at will

Normally, yes, but the EULA for Dragon Age II seems to say that the registration key can only be used on one EA account, and the game, once authenticated, is not transferable.
