If practically every game released is cracked and made available on torrent sites, what's really the point in security systems like this? Hackers will break and/or manipulate it to enable a pirate's computer to bypass the check so doesn't it make things like that redundant when it doesn't stop piracy at all?

It's like homeopathy for corporations: there's all sorts of nifty jargon and probably some pretty graphs and whatnot, and it seems like with all that jazz it ought to do something, so they've convinced themselves it actually does.

No, it only says "Internet Connection Required"  and further reading leads you to believe it's only to access some online pass and content, which I could care less about.  I just want to play the game.

Yes, that's what it says.  And you said:

Sounds like someone didn't read the box before buying, regardless of the exact wording. Immagine inviata

No matter the reasons behind online activation, for me it is too restrictive so I won't buy such games. And so do other people. Which means that not only it doesn't stop piracy but it also deters some buyers. Now, isn't that brilliant? :P

I used to feel that way too, but to be honest they wore me down with game after game requiring activation.

The only thing I feel strongly about now is that you should not need to be online to play. My broadband can be erratic sometimes (damn you Virgin Media!) and there's little as frustrating as not being able to play a game you've paid for because your cable company's doing repairs.

Well of course it does. I have a legitimate game installed. I also play this legitimate game. However, I needed to alter the .exe, a small 7mb file in said legitimate game to be able to even launch this game.

The DRM found something that it didn't like, even though everything on my computer is bought and paid for through legit merchants. Not only do I have to resort to such measures, I am now looking at a complete harddrive formatting because I can't get rid of the darn thing. *I* see the bloody strings it left on my machine, but my system doesn't. The SecuRom removal tool doesn't seem to see its own files either.

As soon as DA 2 is uninstalled on my machine, I have to waste a lot of time, and most likely get a lot of headaches just because of DRM.

I had to check around for means and ways to be able to play my paid for game, and it inevitably brought me to the pirate scene.

No, I don't support piracy. I pay for my stuff, any stuff. I don't like it when something is stolen from me, so I also don't steal from anyone else. Never have. I am the person who gives the cashier the money back if she/he makes an error in my favor. And no, I didn't download DA 2 from them, I didn't need to, I have the game, I bought it, and I know that, because my sales receipt tells me so.

This was me when I landed (inadvertantly even) on a pirate site -->

I never even knew what was out there. Heaven's help me, but I don't think there is a game published that isn't also available through the pirate networks.

I'll be way more careful next time around. I will simply not buy any games that have such an intrusive DRM, that nestles itself into a computer administrator spot on my system. There's enough other stuff out there for me, not to mention the older games I own. Those, and GOG are quite enough to keep me occupied for a long time to come.

However, I can imagine that others might decide to turn to illegitimate means - simply to avoid potentially system busting DRM. /rant

To me is quite the opposite because it only hardens my determination. Like I said many times, if we let publishers do as they please, we will all end up playing on proprietary, restricted and tightly controlled platforms. I want my copy of a game to be free of any kind of activation or online service. It is that simple.

I didn't buy DA2 because of the online activation and I will NOT buy ME3 if it will require anything more than disk check.

I still have to go into town and pre-order my copy. Bandwidth cap makes Digital downloads pointless for me.

The game was only cracked after it was officially released, not one week before, like, you know, on the consoles.

I'm so glad to see that there is no repeated online check. I can tolerate most DRM, but I always think checking to authenticate more than once is going overboard. Kudos, Bioware. If I bought it, I should be able to play it whenever I want offline or not. Thanks for respecting that.

It may online check online once, but it installs malware to your system, aka Securom. Files and registry keys. Remove the keys manually, and you'll have to online check again, and it may not work.

well boxed version of witcher2 comes with securom and one time on-line activation + it downloads about 50mb of data on install (it was anonunced today on cdproject spring conference) which means that there are probably some missing files on dvd which needs to be downloaded before install, something like bioshock 1 drm

He, he, the evil publisher strikes again. Greedy stupid Namco Bandai ****h0l3s!

But, on the good side, CDP RED isn't owned  by Namco Bandai so the gog.com download version is DRM free. I will get the gog version to play and the boxed CE for the goodies.

neppakyo, I feel sorry for you but I hope you will find a workaround. ;)

"At the CD Projekt Red Spring Conference today, new details have been revealed about Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, including DRM details.

CD Projekt has confirmed that The Witcher 2 will in fact use SecuROM for it's retail release DRM. The developers noted that the DRM will still allow for unlimited installations on an unlimited number of computers, with ability to play on up to five computers at once. The game also requires an internet connection for the initial activation.

The only DRM-free version of the game can be obtained digitally from Good Old Games (GOG.com). This is also the only outlet that will allow users to pre-load 90% of the final game."

"What we're trying to do is build business models that are more and more online-supported with additional services and additional content that you get online. So people will see the value in not just getting that physical disc to play at home alone, but actually playing those games online and paying for them. - Jens Uwe Intat senior VP and general manager for European publishing at EA, speaking exclusively to GamesIndustry.biz"

The trick explained

"In our understanding of the business model we are actually giving away the rights to play, and if you just pass it on, pass it on, pass it on, that is not comparable to second-hand sales in the normal physical goods area where you have physical wear-out - second-hand cars, second-hand clothes, second-hand books... they're all physically wearing out, so you have an inferior quality product."

The effect of DRM against piracy may be debatable. The effect on second hand market is unquestionable. If anyone doubted the intention, this is the proof. They do it because they can, not because of games not wearing out. The final goal is, probably, killing retail and exclusive digital access to games allowing for even tighter control.

Nothing happens because there are no limited activations, the game is linked to your EA account and you can activate it again without problems.
