Just wondering if there's any chance that disk versions can be linked to my Steam account? Through code or profile or something? I know I can put it on Steam anyway, but I'd like to have my playtime, achievements and such logged no matter which version I bought (which plenty of games are doing these days). I'd just order the Steam version, but I pre-ordered the Signature Edition from retail and would rather not downgrade that.

Nope you can't. DA2 is not a Steamworks game.

Not needing the disk to play is awesome.

This great bit of info just sealed my pre-order!

Thanks to Bioware for not treating its paying customers like criminals.

Great news on the DRM. I'm so glad there's only an initial online check-in rather than the need to check in periodically. Thanks, Bioware. :-)

You know, if i was ever on the fence about buying DA2 (I'm not, already pre-ordered and excited as hell for it), news like this would be the deciding factor in convincing me to buy.

Thank you, Bioware, for treating the paying customer like they should be.

DRMs are supposed to keep the pirates at bay -- it will be cracked after the first week. So who's punishe for piracy's existance? The honest customers.

At least Bioware have made a good one that is not making the game a 3- or 5-pack of installs -- and insanely grateful I am for that! And despite not having it on steam -- it's good to not have to use the disc.

Though as I use Steam as a game library, I would have loved to have the sig. edition on there. I know why -- however -- they are doing it, it's because Steam takes 30%, shipping takes it's 25% and so on. Leaving out that 30% would mean more profit...

Ok, the phone-home every few days thing was my main concern.

I think I can deal with a one-time only check on install.

Preordered :)

Hope ME3 is the same

You can play offline thereafter - the game will NOT require any subsequent login checks.

Excellent news Chris!  Now I won't have to cancel my Signature Edition pre-order.

THANKYOU!

No disc = Win

1 time login = Win

Pirates = Lose

Why couldn't they have done this so long ago, so many consumers have moved away from PC gaming BECAUSE of SecureRom, 1 login is all you need to verify.

Well done Bioware. This is why you guys are my favourite development studio. :)

Is there any penalty for playing offline, such as not having access to achievements, or being forced to use an offline account?

I am of course comparing this to SC2's DRM.

Sounds much better than what was announced at first. Still would have prefered a disk check or completely DRM free. I don't like being dependant on some distant server to be able to play my games. Especially if it's tied to an account that can potentially be banned at the publisher's whim.

So, it's better, but as far as I'm concerned, not good enough. If I do end up buying it, it'll be when it's released in a "Game of the Year" package with all DLC included, and either pretty cheap or DRM free.

Thank you BioWare and EA. This DRM scheme sounds very reasonable to me. I especially like not having the disc check.

I have 2 EA/Bioware accounts . One I purchased DA:O and Awakenings and completed. The other account I purchased Dragon Age 2 . I would like to know If I can load my save game from DA:O into Dragon Age 2 even with it being on different account . If not should I cancel my Pre Order for Dragon Age 2 and Purchase it on the correct profile . Thank you .

You can import no matter what the acccount of the saves was. Still, how did you buy the game using an account? You have to register the game once you've received it - not now as far as I know.

If online, a game ownership check happens each time you play.

Chris, what does the above mean? Does this mean if you're on-line you have to be logged into your account in-game in order to play (i.e. you can't log out of your account and play if you're connected to the internet)?

No.  To avoid confusion let's separate the terms online/offline to refer to a general active internet connection on your PC, whereas logging in/out is meant for either the "starting the game up" prompt (on first time startup), or the in-game login prompt on the main menu - so there are two separate login prompts (both use the same account though).

Once you've done your one-time check on the "starting the game up" prompt, then you're done from that side (won't ask you again).  Similar to Steam however, if you have an active internet connection then when the game starts up it'll do a check in the background.  The difference is that you can be offline/no internet after the first time and it'll simply default to let you play (essentially an auto-offline mode, no request needed from your part).

The in-game login on main menu is separate thing, and is used for the one-time DLC authorization, or if you want to have character profile updates to this site - but similarly, after the one-time DLC check, you can play logged out as well.

Fantastic! All my questions answered - thank you Fernando, thank you Chris.

I especially thank you for being upfront about SecuROM.

I've personally never had an issue with disc checks. I cant make a cuppa without using the kettle I bought at a store so dont expect to play a game without using the disc I bought at a store either, so the no disc check doesn't worry me.

Being able to play offline without repeated checks means I can play the game. Seems you have just kept a customer - thanks.

Well I have not yet but I was concerned that If when I download and install the digital copy that I preordered it would be already locked to the EA account that I purchased it on . including pre-order content being unaccessable Etc.

But If you are correct and I can upload my save from my other account it shouldn't be a issue .

I think you will find this is BIOWARE to thank here. I wouldn't be surprised if they had to get the darkspawn behind them to get these changes past EA. I'd bet all the gold I gathered in DA:O that the developers are responsible for this and had to do some really tough talking to the publisher to get it accepted.

Good outcome regardless of how it came about.

No disc checks, then? Yes!
