Man I sorely miss the quality of the Antagonists of the 90s (Or maybe just oldschool Bioware Games). The well crafted Evil-doers, whose actions sometimes made you think, "Are they really the bad guys?" or "He's only seeking retribution!", or even "Man, I never thought of it that way!" I mean sure, Jon Irenicus did some pretty dastardly things, but towards the end of BG2, you couldn't help but wonder, "Is he really to blame?"

More or less I'm sick of the simple "Save the world from " plot-line and I'm really hoping there is some sort of plot-twist behind the Darkspawn aside from "Oh hay it's the Darkspawn and the Archdemon out to destroy the world!"

I guess I just miss Baldur's Gate 2 and really hope that DA:O really lives up to the title "Spiritual Successor of Baldur's Gate"

-EDIT-
Just like to add that Jon Irenicus was possibly my favorite antagonist of all time and that the Baldur's Gate 2 storyline was without a doubt my favorite as well, so it's possible I'm being biased.

Well I dont really know how things work out but the one thing that has me bummed is the fact I have to sign a death sentence just to become a grey warden would have been nice to have the choice of being one or not since eventually they succumb to the taint from drinking the darkspawn blood.

You'll definitely see a lot of grey areas in DA:O. There's no doubt.

You have to completely miss something about the guy to ask the question.  He was a monster before and after.  His retribution was grossly disproportionate.  And his original punishment was actually pretty damned humane.

He's the real life equivalent of an escaped convict (not a falsely accused one, mind you) attempting to nuke the state that sentenced him.

Yeah, there may be a few people who have been on a media blackout that may not appreciate that. I feel the same way as well, though.

actually if you played the journeys flash game its right in there and if you read any of the books its in there so I dont really consider it a spoiler and I apologize to anyone who feels it is and has read it without any warning. but what did you think would happen to you if you drank darkspawn blood???

I think that we're far more likely to see that kind of moral ambiguity from other actors that we meet along the way instead of the Darkspawn. If you think of The Blight as a Setting instead as the Antagonist then several opportunities open up for the writers. Instead of just one Antagonist, we have several which adds levels of complexity and Player Agency that just wasn't available in the earlier Bioware storylines. Imagine, if you will, that Bodhi had been more fleshed out (metaphorically speaking)and better separated from Jon. Imagine that we could really interact with Saemon (and kick his raffin' sniggin' naggin' teleportin butt) as a rival. Imagine that we could work against the Shadow Thieves and still advance the PC's agenda, just that it would be REALLY hard. There are hints all over the place that this is something like what we may see in DA: O. Hope this helps.

I'm sure there's people that have even avoided Journeys and don't even know what it is exactly that Wardens drink. Oh well. :P

He's the real life equivalent of an escaped convict (not a falsely accused one, mind you) attempting to nuke the state that sentenced him.

This is an excerpt from his character Biography His overly possessive nature eventually became too much for his partner to bear, and unable to let go, Irenicus turned to pursuit of power and revenge, which in turn led to him becoming utterly evil.

Granted, he also tried to enter the pantheon of the elven gods, but still, just by playing through the first area in BG2 you are able to see that Irenicus is an incredibly fleshed out evil-doer with more than just wanting to conquer the world. And being stripped of all that made him an elf could quite possibly considered inhumane as we have no idea how to gauge what it feels like to be an elf.

I'm definately looking forward to it, but I find it hard to picture the Darkspawn/Archdemon as anything but the generic minion/master out to conquer/destroy the world.

I agree with Catcher, since I remember a dev saying something along these lines before.  The blight is basically the backdrop -- it's the political intrigue between different cultures and races that provide the meat of the story.  Hence the lack of, say, Drawkspawn as a playable race.

So then the darkspawn or blight is merely the oil that greases the engines of corruption and betrayal.

Everyone knows that the great and powerful super villain for Dragon Age is in fact, a super awesome Grey Warden that didn't quite die when he went down to the Deep Roads and was somehow turned to the Blightside.

On the face of it, the whole population of the world should unite against the darkspawn and we would be looking at an epic battle and a rather clichéd game. I don't think that's quite what's going to happen, though.
