Why can I enable DX 11 if my card doesn't support it?

I have an Dual NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250 SLI machine.

Everywhere i read it says that my card is DX 10
compatible, not DX 11.

I ran the demo with DX 11 and only crashed once,
but i do see an improvement with DX 11, especially in the surroundings.
This might not be the right place to ask,
but what's the deal with DX 11 and low range cards? If it not officially
supported, why do i have the option to turn it on?

Will I be able to play the game with DX 11
without any trouble?

Directx 11 is compatible with DirectX 10 cards, just not 100%. You will see DX11 features supported by DX10 cards, like cloud shadows, but I believe tesselation is a DX11 hardware exclusive.

The GTS 250 is another of the nVIDIA cards that was recycled while they were running behind spinning off medium and low end versions from the GT200 High End GTX 280.  It had previously been the Geforce 9800 GTX-plus, so while it relied on the elderly 8800 design, it was basically a High End graphics card, just a somewhat older one.

There have already been a couple of message threads along similar lines to this one, so I would have to guess that eventually just one will be chosen by moderators, for everyone to use for this discussion.
