I find it funny that people can have problems with the demo. There are not many skills for you to use and you have health potions.

Sorry but this comes across as pompus. I assume you where born with gaming skill and you never had an issue with any game you played?

I am not so lucky (I struggle with most games) While I find the demo easy it's because I learned how DA works. I found DA hard (in a good way) the first time I played it and I was thankful when people gave advice

Not really, he's pretty spot on the demo is really easy. Some people are just trash at video games.

Level up your party, I found it was easiest for me with Hawke as a rogue, can easily dodge the Ogre's tackles. Oh and show um a lot of backstab love!

Hey there, I have tried several times to beat the ogre, and just can't, the three party members all die quite quickly then I am ganged up on by a bunch of darkspawn and the orge, I have played as a warrior and roque, anyone have any tips for me on this?

I'm sorry, but you may suck at the game.  Only 1 party member went down in my second playthrough, and 1 in my first.

I understand if you were playing it like God of War at first, but after these suggestions if you follow them you shouldn't have too much of a problem. Wasn't talking about you specifically, just some people are bad at video games. Nothing to be ashamed about.

Don't worry, the full game will have a casual difficulty setting specially made for you. :wizard:

They should have a difficulty setting where the enemies have a timer and when the timer runs out, the enemies just keel over dead if you haven't killed them yet. Oh, and your PC can't die.

That should be easy enough for some people.

Wow, ok, here's a thought--let's stop being dicks to the person who turned up to ask politely for advice O.o

Anyway, don't worry about the ogre. It's tempting to just go for him, but others in this thread are right. The other darkspawn will swarm Aveline and deal too much damage for you to heal. If you're playing a mage, make use of Mind Blast to knock back the additional darkspawn, Heal to keep Aveline up, and Fireball to take out the darkspawn.

If you're a rogue, use Backstab to get out of the ogre's way when it's charging, Miasmic Flask to keep the adds and the ogre stunned, and Evade to GTFO if you're surrounded.

If you're a warrior, use Pommel Strike and Shield Bash on the ogre. Whenever it's not acting, you're not getting hurt. Mighty Blow will also fell weaker darkspawn very quickly. Hope that helps.

Yeah these kinds of threads always bring out the braggarts.  Potion cooldown means you can't just rely on potions.

I sic Aveline on the ogre and keep Carver or Bethany working on the mobs.  Otherwise Carver dies too easily if he is fighting the ogre. Keep Aveline healed up.  If that fails, run.  My mage had to constantly run back and forth and spam fireball/ winter's grasp in between.

No, the OP doesn't suck at the game - I died like 4 or 6 times! And I've played rpgs since BG1 and BG2....

The thing is this:

Aveline needs to level up in constitution, all points for her go into constitution. And let her take shield defense/shield wall and pommel strike.

Let Bethany rain fireballs a lot, then take winter's grasp (just use the spell at the ogre). And do get heal also.

Use the rogue's ability to evade, and backstab the ogre a lot. Take rush or miasmic flask.

And pausing the game is your friend.

And yes, go after the darkspawn first, having Aveline shifting between them and the Ogre.

I find the combat somewhat harder than in DA: Origins - and why do the heal speal need 60 seconds to cooldown?

First of all, pour all of Aveline's skill points into Constitution so she can tank properly.

You can do this fight without giving her any con. (Though a bit is good) You need to give her Str for Fortitude and Cun for Defense.

Play as an archer - don't ever shoot the ogre, just shoot the darkspawn. There's literally NO way you can lose that way.

I had difficulty with this too. On my fourth attempt i managed to wittle down the regular darkspawn before Aveline and Hawke perished, and was able to run around and avoid the ogre's attacks while whittling it down slowly with Bethany's magic stick.

It's weird that i had more trouble with this than i did beating the Harvester on hard... but i do like that i can now actively avoid being hit.

I went in with a two handed warrior hawke and at the ogre i had like six heal potions and i had beth as heal with some fire spell and aveline tanking

i had aveline usind defend and the stone armor buff and taunt to keep aggro, beth was using fireball which owned the random darkspawn mobs and my two handed warrior i used to run around and help wipe out the mobs and worked on ogre till it fell

it really helps to switch the radial menu to toggle open/closed and use it to pause the game durin fight to acess the situation

But people can get better, and one of the things this forum exists for is players to help each other.

So either offer some suggestions or quit trolling the OP.  (not you specifically, just generally to all the "I'm so awesome" posters)

Give Aveline some cun so her defense is alright.

Have her tank the ogre facing away from the other party members. He does area damage, and front cone damage.

Make sure her shield defense is enabled so she can't be knocked back.

Kill off the darkspawn as they come. Aveline can taunt some spawn as well as tanking the ogre. Just make sure to position yourself so the ogre and the spawn are all facing her from the front. 50 % reduced damage from frontal damage.

Health pot as necessary

Once they are all dead. Kill the ogre.

For aveline, push points into cunning - that affects your dodge % and a dodge tank is better than a dmg soaking tank in this game (at least, my IMO right now). If you have heal with your mage, also get heroic aura. That boosts your defensive %.

Use the environment. Just because the ogre attacks you in an open field doesn't mean you need to stay there. There is a choke point behind you. The path you used to climb up to the ogre.

If you have a rogue, I find archery is much better. DPS and Bethany ranged attacks along with aveline soaking damage is not a bad approach.

ETA:

Also, the mob isn't infinite. Focus on clearing out the mooks and just stun the ogre. Mind blast is actually a good skill in this context (though the fact it has knockback is actually kind of bad for AOE).

I'd agree with Maria. Cunning and strength are probably best. Personally, I invest 2 points into cunning and the other point into strength per level up for warriors.

(If you look at the defense skill when investing in cunning, you'll see that each point invested gives a bigger return up to a certain point.)

Though you wouldn't know it from the way we've all been behaving since, oh, August

OP, if you had trouble with the ogre, and you manage to beat it, you can apply the same principles to the Hayder fight later in the demo.  Set a tank on the big boss monster, and use AoEs, stuns, etc. to kill and control the other enemies.  They tend to come in waves, and if you're quick and make judicious use of the pause button, you can usually kill one wave of enemies and get a few hits in on the boss enemy before the next wave turns up.
