They looked stupid before and they look stupid now. I dislike the darkspawn in general. I felt the cast of enemies fought in previous games based on the forgotten realms universe was both more interesting and diverse.
You are comparing DnD, many worlds and planes vs Thedas?
Seems *slightly* unfair but ok.
To the OP:
I don't care for the new DS myself. The hurlocks look like undead somethings, the Ogre is silly and the emissaries which I thought I would like are nothing more than those arcane horrors we fought in dao which don't seem connected in the new design at all. The old DS all had a grimace that I thought was creey enough.
The new designs however do help render things low-mid machines can handle so there is a plus.

The darkspawn that the Warden encounters are Blight-born - they were created in the Shadow of the Archdemon, their taint amplified, twisting, perhaps overwhelming, their bodies into their contorted forms.
The darkspawn that Hawke encounters are your typical Deep Roads variety (disregarding or otherwise justifying the DA:O concurrent portions of the game) - the Archdemon is not there to amplify the taint, thus they keep truer to the the forms of their origination.

I mean, we're talking of people who call the market situated in lower part of the city "Lower Market", a part of town placed high "Hightown" and village placed on red cliffs "Redcliffe". Palespawn i could see, but darkspawn? B-tch, please.

I like the change mainly because you can actually see how they are corrupted humans/other races. I like how they look in origins as well, but since certain races produce certain darkspawn (humans = hurlocks, dwarves = genlocks, etc... as far as I remember) I like seeing that hint of former humanity in there. To me it makes them more frightening... to see what becoming tainted could do to you.

Well, the main thing the redesign does to me is make me scratch my head and go "why would anyone call that darkspawn"
Because they're created from the taint caused by the Tevinter Mages corrupting the Black City.
Edit: And Blackspawn sounds silly.

The new darkspawn are seemingly more human with both intact noses and square teeth, yet the developers sacrificed their menacing determination by having them act like the goblins of Moria. They scurry around the battlefield, constantly snarling, hissing and shaking their weapons in the air like angry chimpanzees. Neither scary, nor threatening. There is none of the evil, corrupted mind and apparent lust for battle, only a mindless, stupid predator that probably wishes it was in Left 4 Dead instead.

It's a combination of the LOW RES COIF and the teeth and nose makes them look utterly retarded and weaksauce.

OK, while I am certainly no fan of the DA:O ones which looked like zombie orks, Bioware, really what the hell were you thinking with the Hurlocks?

Seriously what the hell were they thinking? Awakening gave us awesome looking Hurlocks and they just trash them.

Well I suppose if they lost the quif, gained fangs, oozed black taint, and had armor bran new looking armor that showed off their shapely legs and backs... well then maybe they'd be OK. I'd still prefer the reptilian tainted decaying looking darkspawn from DA:O though.

...But then they kinda retconned that by making them look exactly like corrupted versions of their parent race. C'est la vie.

I hope that alternate armors and higher graphics levels will improve things, but really, the weird jerky animations coupled with the coifs (coifs are universally stupid looking) makes them look bad. I do think the "bolters" who are Hurlocks with different armor look a little better though. As for the ogre change, has there been anything but a recouloring? I don't notice any change. Love the Qunari change, Sten wasn't unique enough, though the change make them look a little too "demonic" imo.

if you look at some of the ogre comparisons, they put a big pudgy nose on it, just like they added noses to hurlocks... and it looks baby-faced... face also looks a little flatter.gauntz wrote...

Also, I can't get over the pink/pale pig skin.. it still looks like they left out a texture and nobody told them.
Corrupted humans with a really good dental plan?TheCreeper wrote...
Personally the Intellgent Darkspawn in
Awakening where the best looking but DA2 is much better than Origins,
Origins Darkspawn looked very very generic while the new ones actually
look like corrupted humans.

and uncorupted, smooth, pale, unblemished skin and personal trainers?

I'm sorry but that doesn't looked corrupted like this:

That looks sinister and corrupted.
Milky white eyes, flesh thats decaying, nose, ears, and lips that have fallen off, teeth that are corrupted into spikey fangs... even the armor is better, rusty and moldy and full plate..
Wanting to change it to something new and unique is fine with me, but they ended up making it worse in my opinion... I hope they fix it for the next iteration of DA.
