You can't, which makes it a pain in the ass when positioning AOE spells optimally. I'm hoping that the actual game will, for PC users, have some form of tactical view where you can detach the camera from a character and view a certain area where you want to cast an AOE. The isometric view was essential for casting AOE spells in DAO (at least for me).
I hear that the developers don't feel it is worth the time and effort to include this function in the game because the majority of people play DA on consoles. In other words, they are not catering to PC users anymore.

You can zoom out a little bit by scrolling the mouse wheel. Also, if you hold the right mouse button, you can change your angle of view.
That is just something that some users have made up. In reality, changing the way functionality works would have taken them more time and effort than leaving things the same way.I hear that the developers don't feel it is worth the time and effort to include this function in the game because the majority of people play DA on consoles. So we really are stuck with that limited view?? Seriously? I thought we could still pan the camera but the camera is still close to the ground, i did not know that panning the camera will be taken out entirely.. This sucks....

That interface is just plain in the way, zoomed in everything is happening in the bottom 40% of the screen, and we can't zoom out sufficiently to get a good view. I have found that toggling the interface using (V) helps and it looks great too. But that requires memorising squad quick slots. I plan on spending some time fiddling with my mouse and keyboard profiles to come up with something more efficient.

So you can zoom out and expect that to replace the brid's eye view? That's really sad...

Read this thread: social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/141/index/4376174 <--- lots of information
Mike Laidlaw says that PC users will be able to pan the battlefield. It wasn't in the demo, but lets hope it is in the full release.

The problem with toggling v is that you can't see any interactive data at all, like object, character, monster names, health bars, etc, when you hit tab.
