The arcane warrior is actually a lost legacy which was(is) discovered by the grey wardens of ferelden in the elven ruins and thats when it is unlocked.
This happens parallely when Hawke is on his way to rise in power. So unless Hawke gets to learn it from the previous warden or from an elven spirit.. there is no other way to get the arcane warrior into picture as it would make the story inconsistent.
But since Hawke is more about damage and destruction the force mage should be good enough seconded with the blood mage specialization.
However the arcane warrior was my top favorite in the Origins and the mage becomes more devastating with bloog magic and then battle mage specialization in awakening brings the creaming on the ice. the arcane warrior blood battle mage with spirit and elemental spells becomes a juggernaut of power
Actually, that line of reasoning doesn't quite work ... you could have learned it from Anders, who had that option in Awakening. Since we're not meeting Anders until after the events in Awakening, the timeline fits. But that's neither here nor there since AW isn't an option.
Anyway, I usually play rogue 9 times out of 10. But I'm very nearly being swayed by the idea of playing mage first. The only thing putting me off at the moment is the robe situation. Yes, I'm very, very shallow like that.

I actually really like the idea of the contradiction between picking up both spirit healer and blood mage. It seems at first glance that both would be opposing specialisations, but in fact the reasoning behind picking up both suggests a deep understanding and reverence for a control over life and death ... I really like that idea.
That said, I want to have Anders in my party, and if he's going to be the healer, I'm not sure I need two, so blood mage and force mage would make more sense if we're looking at optimal specs. Perhaps there will be enough difference between his spec and Hawkes that it is possible ... we'll have to wait and see. Perhaps I'll play rogue first after all so I can find out how Anders can be optimally spec'd before taking the plunge with 2 mages in the party.
