I do hope there's some good reaction, from both followers and world NPCs, to you based on being a mage. Since I'll be playing a blood mage, I'm hoping for some dialogue responding to that since no one comments on it at all in Origins.LobselVith8 wrote...
Those were some great screenshots. I'm anxious to see how the story unfolds with an apostate Hawke.
I'm probably dreaming, but it would also be great to learn spells through RP and not just leveling up. You could sort of do that in Origins by learning specializations from followers, but since it was tied to approval and carried over in replays, it's not quite the same.

does anyone know if you get the blood mage specialisation straight off the bat or if you have to learn it from someone?? I ask as when I played the demo it wasn't on there

Definitely going to have to do something to get it.
100% chance of that.

I remember it being said that Merril will have trouble being the party healer so I'm guessing she's missing creation.

Thanks for that... I'm having a heck of a time getting an answer to this question, so any hints are useful at this point.lameduckie wrote...

No. There are no relevant abilities, unless Force Mage completely defies it's description.darklordpocky-san wrote...
so any talk of a Spellsword/Mage Knight build in DA, Bioware?

As poeple know who read the Warrior class discussion thread, I usually play warriors in fantasy games (and heavy gunners in shoter, etc). Whiel I appreciate having a mage with me for healing or (essentailly) artillery, I usually prefer having the weapon in my hand, wading in and smacking people around.
However, Dragon Age 2 has changed my opinion. As usual, I first played through with a warrior and had a great time, but along the way I would take over one of the party NPC mages (Merrill, Bethany, etc) and use them when needed in battle (or when my warrior died). They were much more fun to play than I was expecting. Sure, you can still rely on your party mahges for healing or support, etc but actually being the mage, selecting what spells I wanted, not to mention the much better mage outfits in DA2 made them a much more enjoyable experience than I was expecting.
Don't get me wrong, I still loves me my 2 handed berzerker warrior, but mages kick a lot of buttock in DA2. They also set them on fire, freeze them in place, rip them apart, etc.
This is pretty much exactly what I expect to do Chris.
I mean I'll still play warrior, but I feel like because I enjoy mage so much I'll be switching to my mage party member (Merrill, Anders) an aweful lot to dish out the pain.

kinda sucks if they really scale it back like that
I was hoping they would do away with the Arcance Warrior and replace it with a less tank-like Spellsword o 3o

I mean yeah I could wear armor and use a weapon, but I couldn't use weapon skills or anything. Plus I had to sheath the weapon in order to use magic. So it was slightly underwhelming.
I mean sure they could update these classes and include them in DAII, but I think the reason they didn't was to put more definition between all the classes while at the same time drastically improving all of them.

What's the likelihood of the spirit talent tree redeeming the mage in regards to healing abilities?
I'll be pretty disappointed if the mage can't play an effective support role. Seriously limits the scope of the class and party composition options.

All classes now have support utility and front line abilities. Their design decisions have been to make it more of a party mechanic, with cross-class combos a prime example. I seriously doubt you would have or need one guy at the back just healing.

If you want to play a damage mage, balance your party to have a dedicated healer w/tactics.Aesieru wrote...

What you're implying is that mages shouldn't be responsible for healing.
Well who/what then exactly? Potions? lol you've just removed a vital function of RPG party mechanics.
Not implying you should have "one guy at the back just healing". I'd like the option to be effective in doing that, if I want or needed to though. Potions are so generic. Anyone can chug back a potion. Healing abilties are class defining abilities for the mage, in the same sense rogues and warriors have damage mitigation (rogues evade/dodge, tanks soak).SomeBug wrote...

That's what the NPCs are for. I never played a healer/ buff mage. Destruction is too much fun.Aesieru wrote...

We have yet to see how the rest of the Creation tree works out. Defensive buffs like Heroic Aura may be more important this time around. Enemy archers are deadlier, as they were also getting to be in Awakening.Wivvix wrote...

You get no choice in the matter. Hawke can only be human. Elves and Dwarves can't be Champions, apparently.WarBaby2 wrote...

give meager +8% of Defence. Arcane Wall gives another +5%. Bubble lasts 6
seconds for 45 seconds of cooldown (and Warriors have Stonewall which
gives the same effect for 5 seconds every 10 seconds).
Only significaltly useful buff is Haste, but it's on 60 seconds cooldown.

Since Spirit healer spec is just more of creation, I expect it to be as useless as Creation now. So Force/Blood specs for me!
