Should I focus on just pumping up Magic and Constitution, or will will power be as important as it was in the last game?

Staffs/Robes are likely to have Magic and maybe Willpower requirements.

Magic is your most important stat since it increases the damage of your spells. In DA:O Magic had to be pumped almost exclusively to allow spells to penetrate resistance in Nightmare. A developer has not commented on if Magic will be used to help overcome magic resistance in DA2 or not.

In the videos I've seen the Bioware employees playing a mage did an even split between Magic and Willpower with no investment elsewhere. That doesnot mean that is the best way to do it though.

I don't seen you being able to juggle keeping up more than 3 stats max because you have to continue to invest in the stats to keep the bonuses provided as you level.

Unless there are willpower requirements for staffs/robes  I'll probably go 2 points Magic every level and alternate between willpower and constitution for the third point.

regarding healing.... I guess the demo isnt going to tell us much about the actual necessity of healing in the game, especially on Nightmare or Hard but it SEEMED that healing was even less important than before... also,. it seemed I healed for no reason during fights after special moves....

so maybe it will not be as important as DA:O.... and even in DA:O it was only really necessary for boss fights or lots of critter fights.... much less important than it used to be in RPGs.

Mana Regeneration.

Question For Peter: What is the standard rate of stamina regeneration per second in battle? Is it the same for mana? I know that you said that deep reserves is +10 stamina regeneration, which mathematically comes out to .25% stamina regeneration per second, which means 1% stamina regeneration every 4 seconds. That means in 28 seconds, deep reserves regenerates 7% of your stamina bar.

Varies per class. Warriors and Rogues have other methods of regaining Stamina as well. Mages rely on passive regeneration rates. Warriors also get Stamina back when they kill someone, and also have the Bolster tree. Rogues regain Stamina every time they successfully hit an enemy.

Yeah, the only problem I had with DA2's mage is that if you pick that class, you lose Bethany! Which suuuucks. Not that I want to play favourites between the sibs, but yeah, Carver, you die now. Not later. Now.

Ah well.

As for the staff-twirling, I really didn't see it as excessive. I mean yeah, it's flashy, but it's not like he's doing backflips. I guess there are just 2 schools of thought on the matter. The DA:O style was literally just pointing the staff at the enemy over and over and over and over again. The DA:2 style has him twirl the staff like he knows how to use it as a melee weapon and not just a power conduit.

As for stats, I went through DA:O without putting any points into HP, and very few into Mana. If it's as important in DA:2, I'd say 2 into Magic every level up, and alternate between Cunning for defense and Willpower for mana.

For me it seems like being more well rounded with your stat alottment will make you stronger in more ways than just pumping everything into magic with a smattering of points in willpower.

I'll try to focus on keeping my magic high enough so my attack is at 100% vs normal enemies, keep enough cunning to maintain 50% defense (which should also provide me some crit damage bonus), try to keep a healthy mana pool and hp going and if I can squeeze it in some dex to improve my crit rate.

I'll probably be going a similar direction with my mage.

Rockpopple, you're right about losing Bethany, I hated to see her go. Even my nephew, who played some of Origins but didn't like the pacing, gave DA2 a try and was upset to see her go (he's actually excited for the game). I don't see why she has to croak if we pick a spellcaster outside of being forced into the class combo thing (which is cool but I hate being forced into it). I especially don't understand it since we pick up a warrior not long after she bites the bullet. So it's ok to have two warriors but we're not allowed two mages - in the demo anyway. Ah well, I will play every class and she'll be a welcome part of the ones she is included in.

What would be cooler - if you ask me - is that whomever you're more liked by when you reach that part is the person who gets killed. That would be neat. Cruel but neat.

So just out of left field....when Wesly sees Bethany he calls her an apostate. How does he know she isn't a circle mage? Do all the templars know all the mages? And how does one tell an apostate by sight alone? Thoughts?

The Circle mages are usually locked up in the tower except on rare instances. Btw, does anybody know anything about the blood mage class in DA:2? Hope some new abilities come along with it.

Finally I can play my apostate mage.

I like how the spells progress much more realistic a progression than simply clicking straight across a spellbook list. I also like you can specialize in one spell making it more effective.

People complain about the animations but I am happy to see that mages can finally mix it up a little. I also like that we know longer simply alternately raise our hands with the area effect spells, that animation always annoyed me. I like that you throw your magic rather than point your staff at them and have it shoot of the tip like some over sized Harry Potter wand.

Finally a mage that is an adventurer not a misplaced scholar in the woods.

Going to be my first play through.

well its likely he was just jumping to conculsions their were only 7 mages allowed out of the circle to be anywhere near Ostagar as you/bethany werent one of them he assumes your apostates

think about it how many circle mages are seen OUTSIDE of the tower in Origins?

i think it perfectly captures how those rightous bastards think!

i hope we can caputre one and locking him in a library

Its very likely that most of the Mages outside the circle were not likely to be circle mages. First the circle mages where specific types of robes denoting their rank within the circle, second they wear a circle signet ring and finally only a handful of senior mages are outside of the tower. Being a Templar near Ostagar I am certain the Chantry would have made it, its business to know that none of the younger mages were outside the Towers.

I'm watching someone play a mage on the demo, and I was also wondering about stats as we

Magic/Will most important as they were in DAO?

Also....mages still can't wear armor, yes?

She wasn't wearing her secret decoder ring ? More likely it was because she didn't immediately start grovelling when she saw a Templar.

both can lead to blood magic so they allow it to further their propaganda
