I'll be going with a primal primary mage for play on NM. Based on 22 points he will look something like this:
...

That's pretty close to what I plan to do. To borrow your method,

Specializations:
Force Mage
Spirit Healer for the mana regen +25

Full Primal--10 points

Arcane--5 points
Mind Blast (Epic fail spell to start with)
Arcane Shield and 2 upgrades
Barrier

Force Mage-4 points
Fist of the Maker and 2 upgrades
Unshakable

Creation-3 points
Glyph of Paralysis
Heroic Aura + Upgrade

I do hope there exists enough armor usable to a mage that he doesn't have to be relegated to the rear guard...

Quick question for everyone:....
in dragon age-2 i noticed when leveling up my mage (bethany) that like every other character, when you put points into dexterity, the "Critical-Chance" stat goes up.... and although im not sure about the specific mechanic's of what im about to say, but... in origins the mage weapons had no critical-chance-stats on them, which led me to believe that mages cant have critical hits with spells (and i guess i never payed close enough attention to the damage output numbers above the enemies heads, since i was always working on that with my archer), but is that true still in dragon-age-2??...i guess what i mean to say is, would it pay off to put a few points into dexterity for a mage? or does dexterity only work for a specific class-specialization like the Arcane-Warrior had in dragon-age origins?....i'd appreciate it if soeone could please explain this to me and the rest of the forum in deeper detail, as i love using the combat-mechanics to put a twist on my gameplay instead of just loading up on magic and willpower points and nuking anything that moves...thank you in advance to whomever can explain the dexterity advantages or disadvantages  for me!

Please do not put any points into dex. You need the points in Magic and willpower, with a little in constitution.

Would love to know this as well.
I put a few points in Dexterity on my Mage which added up to a 4% critical chance so far. I want to say that I have seen a couple of long range staff attacks that criticalled. But I'm not sure... And if long range attacks possibly critical, what happens with the melee staff attacks?
I wonder if spells can critical, and if so does Dexterity affect that as well??

Someone created a thread about this social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/141/index/6156860/1
I posted this same thing there.

didnt someone say in one of their replies at the begginning of this topic that dragon-age-2 mage-playing ISNT AT ALL LIKE Dragon-Age-origins or awakening??(i might've read it in a developer blog too but i'm not 100%-sure on that) BUT the gist of it is, they wanted to change mage-level-ups from seeming almost mechanical and having the same style of play as DA-origins, and make it more fun playing as a mage instead of putting the points into those two stats and simply being a nuke-machine...although the players could still do that if they wanted to it seems

(by the way grumpy old wizard if you read this topic again, i just wanted yah' to know when i was using capslock in a few of the words above that i wasnt yelling or being a jerk to yah' i was just trying to draw more attention to those specific words as i believe they were important is all,...i just dont wanna come across as being "rude" or anything i guess)

A critical damage build has to invest a lot in both cunning and dex.

Mage robes require willpower and magic on an equal split, from what I've seen in the game. High mage robes required both attributes to be pretty high. Staffs require Magic. The better the staff, the higher the magic required.

Plus the higher your Magic attribute is the more damage your spells will do.And you can't chug lyrium potions like you could in DA:O.

I believe mages in Dragon Age 2 are way to underpowered compared to dragon age origins.

1. No matter how you build your mage, they have no damage in crowd control. The damage of all area spells do nothing to most enemys

2. The attacks from an enemys physical attacks clean the life bar no matter if you equipped a nice rope/armor or don't have one. This means that your mage will always have to be a support character.
2a. This isn't a multiplayer game and because of that it means that it shouldn't have to rely on your party members such as you tend to. You should atleast have a way to become an effective mage/off tank

3. Blood magic in Dragon age 2 is just a reverse in roles of mana and health, in Dragon age origins blood mages were powerful, almost god life, with the sacrifice of having to wade through the game in a weakened state to save the stat points for when you can start building your blood mage. Why are they so gimped now?

I love dragon age 2, i understand that the game wants to make everyone of your team mates useful and maybe i should just play on casual or something but i wanted to get this off my chest, hopefully it helps someone.

Well I'm starting to think Mages are allowed criticals somehow because my Anders has Heroic Aura and it's upgrade. The upgrade gives bonus to critical chance to all party members, and this shows up under all characters Attributes and Derived Attributes.

There are a couple of threads about building a Battlemage/Arcane Warrior style setup:
social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/141/index/6383984/4
social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/305/index/6437534/1

But as long as the Reserved Mana for whatever sustained spells you want to stack don't go over 100% you should be able to stack as many as you want. Putting together the defensive sustainables and their upgrades will make your mage pretty darn tough!!

With the speed this forum is moving at and all those pages in this thread...and the way how I asked this question mutliple times but it seems like no one can give me a straight answer. I'm just going to ask this.

I'm just wondering, how do you do the phantom arms thing from the destiny trailer/beginning of varric's lie. Is it not in the game at all? I've never seen it happen. I heard that it was a finisher for crushing prison, but dont' seem to see it. How do you trigger it?

If I wasn't stuck with Carver, I'd play a mage again, again, again etc. Nothing satisfies me more than sparking my enemies on fire wile healing my friends at once.

It worries me that no body can answer us after all this time. So I guess it really isn't "actually" in the game but just cutscene stuff. Which is really disappointing seeing as how it was in the concept videos, how could it possibly not get into the game?

No one can give me a confident answer?

Ok so I'm just now getting to act 2. I'm slow and I'm a completionist! But anyway, I've just gotten the whole Spiral Eye set that we saw in the demo. Aside from the Champion's Armor are there any other complete sets? As far as robes go I've only seen the starter leather armor looking one, a green version or the same thing, The iffy looking Apostate's Robe (it was Charcoal and Purple), The Scarlet Dyed "Robes" which seem to be the most commmon.

I do like some of the Mage Head armor better than the last game, but are there any other decent robes? Like I would love to see some of the Maleficar style robes from the first game, which are similar to what Anders and Keeper Marethari wear?

I haven't seen any special Mage kills yet . I do enjoy that he shows off
that he's a Mage by making his hands glow. But I am very upset that you
whip out a dagger once again. Since people are so afraid of Mages, I
would think that  having some lightning/fire/ice/stone/spirit coming out
of your hand would scare someone a lot more than a dagger.... but
that's my opinion.

I'm hoping that there are some more Mage
cutscene kills like the fake fight at the beginning, or maybe even an
ingame critical finish hit... here's to hoping!!!!!

After finishing the game (I'd say I did just about everything there is to be done on a single playtrough) as a mage, I can share some info on the few last posts;
Mage robes and sets--> there are 3 sets, Spiral eye in first act, Overseer in 2nd act and Champion's armor in 3rd act. All robes except for the Champions wich u get near the end of the game look gay, so I did this; Go for blood mage, build your magic and const. Ignore willpower and get some strength so you can wear warrior armors and look awesome. Pick up as many sustained spells as you can, since you won't be using your mana anyway. With proper gear and good const, you have unlimited HP for blood magic anyway.

As for the phantom arms, I only saw them ONCE, at the start of the game, in the cutscene with the ogre and never after that. Saw another killing blow cutscene on a high dragon but it was different. So I'm sad to say, IF there is a spell that does that, I have yet to find it, alltho there is a spelleffect that looks like one phantom arm smacking on your oppoment, but I suspect that was the primal fist spell thingie :)

What's the point in playing a mage main character when anders can do the job so much better than you?

wasn't there a thread regarding mage damage? something about how spells do more damage while wielding a bow or 2h sword as opposed to the magic stat/staff damage.

So I beat the high dragon on hard, that was pretty easy.

mage/archer/snb tank/warrior

Probably could have brought isabella but she didn't have much HP.

I think one person died, and that was varric. I wish there were more boss fights like this. Even the Pride Demon wasn't hard.

You can't use anything else then a staff as a mage, since all weapons require a specific talent tree to equip. And I'm not saying high dragon is hard to do as a party, I'm just saying that with blood magic survivability, you can do him alone. Anyhow, overall a fun class. Tried the game again as rogue or warrior, but I just can't get into the lore as a non caster... You just seem so... common.

for those who consider mages weak by the end of the game as a mage i could kill 30 or so guys with out using more then 1/3 of my mana the only problem i found is that i had to syphon a huge amount of money in mana potions and needed aveline for the longer encounters since she'd end up taking 60% of my damage.some of the elites could survive the first "smiting" so you'd need to learn to avoid attacks for a little bit. but if your looking for a good mage be a elemental force mage  with about even Willpower and magic with a few points in constitution to keep you health up.of course being a mage isnt for every 1 including my self until about a month before DA2 was released now i cant go back sadly....
