Does anyone WANT Dragon Age to be more action oriented?

Exactly how refreshing to hear that, people(on this forum) are under the assumption that if you remove a certain element from a game it doesn't fit a certain genre anymore, say if you were to remove pause and play then DA2 wouldn't be an RPG anymore, which is redundant.Felfenix wrote...

you know, i would prefere to have the best of both worlds, ME is one of Biowares biggest IPs and if you ask me it was a better game than origins in many ways, just because something is intense and engaging doesn't mean it has been dummed down, Origins was far to slow for my taste i liked the depth of combat but the pacing was unbearable.
People seem to be under the assumption that something has to be only an action game, or only an RPG, or only a shooter. Good elements from games are not genre exclusive.

I don't care how "actiony" the combat is as long as I can still plan tactically and everything is still stat-driven.
It's not as stat based now. It's twitch based to some degree if you don't pause every couple of seconds.

So Diablo is a bad RPG?
No. Diablo is primarily a game where you're meant to kill stuff and then pick up ridiculously named items. That your toon has stats is the role playing element. It's an action game.
A Role Playing Game has a story that takes the front seat. Characters have motivations for the way they act, what they will and will not do and these motivations are conveyed through dialogue, storytelling and/or other means. A Role Playing game should have combat that's a little more than just "Click on him, quickly! Click him dead!!" Which is exactly the feeling I get from the DA2 demo.
I don't mean to poop on anyone's party, I'm just disappointed right now. Hence the cancellation.

As long as we can pause, and outcomes were determined either by our characters' stats or a combination of those stats and a random number generator, then the combat is stat-driven.

If I wanted to play an action-oriented game, I would go play an action-oriented series. I played Dragon Age for what it was, and that was what I was expecting from a sequel.
It irks me how nowadays nearly every criticism I see of a new series essentially boils down to "this game isn't for me, you need to make it for me."
If I had to describe this gaming generation in one word, it would be "entitlement."
Your critising the game for not being for you, then critisising other people for being entitled
So it makes much more sense to demand a series you don't like change its identity, than for the series to maintain the identity it created for itself and its fanbase enjoys?

The combat is faster, that is the only change. This isn't a massive identitiy shift it is a small improvement.

No. I played the demo, then I cancelled my pre-order with Amazon. They took an RPG and turned it into Diablo. I'm not going to pay 80 Euros for that, sorry Bioware. If this is what EA wants you to make, good luck, it's been fun while it lasted. The Bioware logo used to be pretty much a guarantee that I could buy the game bearing it blindly, but now it looks more like the BW logo is going to mean "better be careful" from now on.
If I wanted to play a Diablo clone, I'd bloody well buy one.
Lol diablo is an RPG...
I disagree. Diablo is an action game with RPG elements. It has no story to speak of. It has no memorable characters. It's all about klicking to death wave after wave after wave of monsters/baddies/whatnot.
Stay awhile and listen... to how little you know.

Sounds like Dragon Age 2-only with less equipment(can't make companions wear armor)Chloe_W1971 wrote...

People, gamers specifically, just like looking for excuses to **** and whine, especially if they don't get their way. Just because the game has more action elements to it now doesn't mean it's no longer an RPG.
It's still going to be an RPG.

Yes, that may well be. The demo managed to hide that perfectly, though. Let me recap my DA2 demo experience:
Intro, lots of exposition (2 minutes)
Fighting wave after wave of darkspawn with ridiculously large swords and apparently lots of colourful amphetamine pills in my characters bloodstream. (5-7 minutes)
More talking, more exposition (1 minute)
More testosterone and amphetamine fuelled "tactical" combat. (5-7 minutes)
Oh, the characters can talk as well. But not a lot, it seems (1 minute)
Yet more darkspawn fall to my characters drug-induced testosterone fest. Poor guys, never had a chance. (10 minutes)
More exposition. This time I can even respond in some fashion. But whatever I say, the game moves forward exactly the same. Shame, that. (1 minute)
Oh, great. More click of death. *yawn* (days)
Heh. Finally I get to do some more roleplaying (1 minute)
JFC, more stuff to click to death. More amphetamine feel. Hawke sure burns from both ends. Oh, and look. There's an... an... ogre...? Party dies. Bethany manages to klick the ogre to death by sprinting around the battlefield, firing on the thing in between healing herself. (an eternity seems to have passed)
Oh, look. We're somewhere else, at last. And we get to talk to Isabela. (1-2 minutes)
Yay! I get to click on things again. And then they die, while Hawke's dealer gets rich. (ages)
and so on. I hope - really, really hope - that it's just the demo and I'll actually enjoy the game. I'm not holding my breath, though. When I had finished the demo, I thought, "Well, that's an hour I'll never get back."

I seriously think there needs to be better ways to classify these games. Final Fantasy is always considered RPG, while some of them don't even let you name your character. If a role playing game means it's based on story, then wouldn't basically any (meh, mostly) game be a rpg?
