I am someone who priotizes gameplay over story and I like slow games as well as fast-paced games.

Problem is, I kinda think the market is overflooding with action-fast-paced games and I really want slower paced games again.

Why don't you STFU?

DA2 demo combat sucked. The whole combat atmosphere and pacing is worse. If I can play it like an action RPG and easiyl slaughter random mooks by the millions, then it isn't tactical enough. Period.

RAISE-THE-DIFFICULTY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ARGGHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!! The devs have said, that on normal and casual there you can survive without micro-managing,, but on hard and nightmare it is a NECESSITY.

Use common sense people, please for the love of god.

Raising the diffiuclty hardly adresses the underlying issue.
The changes are far greater than just faster-paced combat.

I'm just glad it doesn't take 14 seconds to swing a 2 hander anymore. Seriously were those things made of 40 lbs of concrete in da1 or what?

Action and party-based will never go hand in hand. What they have done here - however - is a acceptable sweet spot.

Now the combat is faster, that suddenly means there must be more darkspawn-slaughtering in this game?

^ I don't know because I haven't played the full game yet, have I? I've only played the demo, and I defeated more darkspawn in the demo of "Dragon Age II" than I did in the first half of the whole game of "Dragon Age: Origins." And I didn't say they were exclusive; I said I preferred one over the other. I enjoyed the story in "Origins" more than I did the slaying of darkspawn. Is that simple enough for you?

In any case, you seem to have a problem with people with differing opinions than your own, and that sort -- you know, the sort that always thinks they're right? -- are pretty boring.

I don't doubt that it will be harder on a higher difficulty, but that is different from more tactical.  It is clear that the direction they went with DA2 is of hordes and action oriented combat.  The simple fact that I can't zoom out and unlock the camera into the top down tactical view (or couldn't in the demo at least) is proof enough IMO.

I'm playing a rogue in DAO right now (as in literally, I'm writing this on my laptop while my xbox is playing on my monitor next to the laptop =)) and all I do continually is walk behind people and then hit auto attack. I've got some skills that basically amounts to "auto attack really hard", with a few "stun the one target I'm targeting with my auto attack" options in the fray. It's not exactly very tactical.

In my play of the DA2 demo, my rogue ran into a group of darkspawn, hit one for a bit, used the backstab skill to blink behind another enemy to finish it off after Bethany had hit it and its ilk with a fireball. I pressed on too hard on purpose to keep the enemies off Bethany's frailer frame, whereupon they surrounded me like I had planned and I used my evade skill to hop out from in between them, stunned them all with miasmic flask and then had Aveline do her best to retake control of the battle field before the darkspawn horde recovered.

Note that I'm currently comparing a level 18 rogue in DAO to a level 3 rogue in DA2. Yet I have so many more options in DA2.

You know, despite how many changes in DA2 that I vocally oppose, combat pacing and mechanic is definately NOT one of them. I have faith in Peter! He's probably my favorite developer from Bioware now. :D

I liked both forms of combat. There are pros and cons to both sides honestly.

Looking at the videos of DAII, I was initially slightly turned-off, but it was only because it was gameplay from the warrior. I still think that the warrior is a tad too fast, especially the two-handed warrior. Fast-paced mage is really better than the awkward staff bolt shooting from the first game. I must admit that it's a tad over-the-top at times, but it seems like it's something I can get used to.

The gameplay in DA:O has the traditional nostalgic appeal to it, it really felt like a well-translated version of D&D mechanics without being too restricted by the source material. (Note: I'm just saying it felt like it, not that it was intended to be, I don't know if that's what they intended). But I must say that after playing the demo for DAII, and going back to DA:O, I can't help but ask myself "why is my warrior attacking so slowly?"

Based on occasional lurking around here, it seems like a lot of the people here are very much old school RPG fans. Because of this, the perception seems to be that the new Dragon Age will be terrible simply because it will be faster paced, leading people to assume that it will be a dumbed down hack and slasher. The thing is, I wish that were the case. I would love it if Dragon Age 2 became to God of War what Mass Effect 2 was to Gears of War, an action game with RPG elements. Really though, the only difference me, "a slack jawed console moron who loves teh haloz  and started playing BioWare games on consoles when KOTOR was released" can see is that the combat system they tried to implement in Origins actually works.

TL;DR - This isn't a dumbed down casual God of War clone, but I wish it was.

I think story will be a more important concern for me than action. The problem with a lot of hack and slash games is that they lack a coherent storyline, and DA:O has shown to have a complicated story that still has people having debates over Loghain or the morality of the Chantry and the Circles. The creators have shown talent in presenting complicated issues and dividing us on where we stand - should we spare the Anvil? Is the Architect a friend or a foe to humanity? I think DA2 won't disappoint as long as it continues that thread. So far, we have seen a templar who has shown to be a good man, and an apostate who we can care about as our sister. There seems to be a story to DA2, and I rather like the characters we've seen so far from the demo. I'm anxious to get into the storylines of Merrill and Anders as well, not to mention how the Circle of Magi will react to an apostate Hawke.

The story's more important to me. I mean, I don't want to play a game with horrible controls or anything, but the story is what I'm interested in when it comes to RPGs (particularly Bioware ones).

I feel like I should also point out for the record that I don't think the gameplay in DA II is bad and I'm interested to see how the game turns out.

Historically, a 2 handed sword wouldn't be much slower (if at all) compared to a 1 handed sword. A 2 handed sword from the medieval/renaissance era topped out at about 7-8 lbs, many times with a second grip area above the hilt for better control.

They weren't swung like extremely slow and heavy baseball bats like in DAO. This is a huge improvement in DA2.

Also, does anyone really want the awkward repeated head stab back for rogues?

Better more responsive combat is not exclusive of good rpg elements.

As long as it's fun and the story keeps the Bioware quality I don't care what I play.

That about sums it up.

Hard to tell from a half-hour demo, but it seemed to be fun and it seemed to be the start of a good story.  So perhaps mission accomplished.

If I had to describe this gaming generation in one word, it would be "entitlement."

Highfive!

Double Highfive!

One of the greatest disasters for both movies and games is the 'entitlement' movement.

"Dragon Age II" should have mirrored "Dragon Age: Origins", but with a new story, new skills, new abilities, slight upgrade to graphics, and enhancements to game performance.

Now, "Dragon Age II" is a kiddie X-Box game.

My battle with the Arch Demon in DA:O was soloed by my warrior. I went in...pressed A...tanked it with my butter knife and called in troops until she died. I used Shield bash and other skills I really couldn't tell you what...why? Skills were boring, didn't really add anything. The battle was...dull, I just had to drink a potion on occasion, use my occasional worthless skills and press A on Occasion. With DA 2, the combat is far more appealing, the skills far more remarkable. I am glad Bioware could see this, changed the game appropriately because my opinion is right....because for me the game is being made to improve upon the stuff that made DA:O, un unique. Don't like it, don't buy it but at least for me, I am sold. I guess my opinion...since it agrees with Biowares is better than yours therefor...I win.

I was pretty disappointed with the feel of the demo. After playing MMOs for years after Baldur's Gate 2 and Icewind Dale, taking another swing at Dragon Age: Origins was a breath of fresh air. Now this.

Developers like PC gamers' money, but they want to make games geared towards console players. Thanks, Bethesda. I guess that cash was too good to pass up.:pinched:

Kind of. I wanted faster paced combat, but not how fast it was in the Demo, but I've gotten used to it while playing and don't really mind it now.

So some people feel entitled to define DA 2 as not an RPG becuase it's action oriented? They feel entitled to get sequels that only adds stuff a la DCL just because it's what they want while ignoring whatever circusmtances sorround Bioware's decisions and motives?

Entitlement indeed.:innocent:

People are idiots. You guys keep complaining that its all action with no story when you havent played the game. It has most of the same elements but now the combat is more appealing so it must be bad!!!!

DAO was action oriented enough as it is. It just had some relatively poor pacing. Mass Effect 1 and 2 were worse in that regard, however. Very slow to start.

Dragon age origins will always hold a place in my heart for its character development more than anything and also its gripping story. But i did feel that the combat was a little rough around the edges From what we've seen from the demo etc the pacing has improved a bit and the new animations are smooth and more visually appealing.

To me a game with a great story but little action would be unappealing unless it had something totally unique to keep me interested. So the new found sense of action rpg i get from DA2 is appealing .

in short

action is = to story

This. The new way of fighting was much more enjoyable and it didn't feel so awkward as it did in DA:O. I am sure most people think this way, except the ''old school hardcore super cool RPG'' players, who seem to be against any changes that BioWare makes to their games. <_<

Do what you like, I am going to enjoy my share of DA2 in March.

the new combat is much more enjoyable than the one in da:o . In da:o i always played on easy so that i could rush through the fights because they were slow and not very exciting.

And for all the people nagging about the faster system...you can still pause the game whenever you want and thus make it slower.
