I've had this idea for a while now, and I just can't shake it, so I thought I should post it somewhere where people can read it and tear it apart. I think the Normandy needs a fighter pilot. A fearless, almost reckless top-gun who's been all over the galaxy, serving in the Alliance navy, working as a bounty hunter, conducting a few Cerberus contracts, even spending time working with the Quarian Flotilla. Most recently, this pilot would have served as a scout for the Destiny Ascension, flying his customized Turian strike fighter in the Battle of the Citadel. His personality could even be directly affected by the events of ME1. If the Ascension was saved, he moved on with no regrets and is still a headstrong pilot and outgoing ladies man. If the Ascension was destroyed, he'd be more closed off, solemn and bitter, even angry at Shepard, having lost friends and former lovers on that ship. Either way, he could have a rivalry with Joker, competing with him as a pilot. He could even recount his many exploits, both memorable battles, and experiences with the many women of all different races he's served with, providing a rich backstory that helps flesh out the lesser-known parts of the Mass Effect universe. He could also hit on a female shepard if he isn't pissed over the Ascension's fate, or share a beer and some stories with a male shep. His two-person turian strike fighter can be used to scout out dangerous areas ahead of the Normandy, perform precision strikes on enemy targets the Normandy is too large to hit(such as ventilation shafts or small trenches) or could have it's torpedo/bomb bay modified to drop Shepard and his squad into areas far too hot for the Normandy to get close to(low orbital drop anyone?). The player could take control of his fighter's weapons when he needs to focus on intense flying(think Star Wars Arcade style rail shooting), or even take complete control and engage directly in space combat if something should happen to him.

I don't have a name yet, I'm not good with that kind of thing. Anyway, this is just an idea I had, it might not even be worth anything, but I figured I'd post it anyway. Thoughts?

I only read the title but YES. I have always thought having 1-2 fighters(there is definitly place for them. look how empty the bay is) would be great idea...Just look how the small collector defense drones almost blow normandy up. and it was only a few of them. A fighter would make short work of them

Mhmm just think about the posibilities "Commander who do we send in the fighter?" ( dies if not Loyal/ fighter upgraded/wrong person picked).Another possible death AND a choice during SM.

All I can think of is ME3 Trailer Sniper guy!!

Actually for a ship larger then the SR-2 I would completly agree with you. But the fact the Normandy is an up-scaled sleak fighting craft anyway means it wont ever happen unfortunatly.  Well not if Bioware destroy the Normandy and replace it with a larger craft. I cant see that happening to be honest.

But I like your idea of character and can see the type of person your wanting to appear in ME3.  I just hope its not a skilled fighter pilot but a skilled sniper!

Normandy got 60 probes, a shuttle(fighter is not much larger), M44 hovertank and ****load of empty space.
Normandy is a frigate not an upscaled fighter. It looks the way it does to make it "c00l to l00k at lulz" It could look like a brick and still have similar characteristics.

Well for example look at the end cutscene in ME2. The Collector vessel dwarfed the SR-2 and the cinematics made the Normandy as sleak as any small craft would look. Dodging through a debris field is a perfect example of this.

Why do you need anything smaller? Cinematic wise the SR-2 does what a fighter would do and compared to a 2km Reaper in ME3, the SR-2 will be having a tough time anyway. Anything smaller is rather pointless.

I dont want a fighter to replace SR-2. I am pointing out there is enough space to have 1-2 fighters inside. SR-2 is also 2 times larger than orginal normandy SR-1

You know what would be cool? Point defense/combat drones. Maybe half a dozen, each about half the size of a fighter craft. Unmanned, and remote controlled by EDI. They can take care of things that get too close to the ship or something that gets into the blind spots.

"Ms. Lawson, do you know what Commander Shepard is up to?"

"No EDI, why?"

"Because she grabbed two Cains from the armory, a roll of duct tape and is heading to the hangar bay muttering something about 'fighters' and 'not needing a dedicated ship'"

Nah Normany doesn't need a Starfighter... it just needs Legion with the Widow and a fire extinguisher pushed out of the Airlock. He can get back, when he is done headshotting the pilot of whatever it is that needs to be killed quickly, just like Wall*E.

So long as it gets a special attack called the Death Blossom I'm all for it.

"You have been recruited by the Star League-" "Commander Shepard." "Whatever. To fight Xur and the Ko-Dan Arm-" "The Reapers." "You're no fun."

Now that I think about it, the fighter could also function as a flight simulator, allowing Shepard to relive classic ME battles like the First Contact War, or the Battle for the Citadel, as well as never-before-seen battles in well-known locations, like the Quarian flotilla. Can you imagine darting through the hundreds of Quarian ships fighting off pirates?

I always thought that it would be fun having a fighter there if only for Close air support and the like, because the Normandy is big enough to have a fighter and it would make logical sense, given most frigates of this day and age have helicopters or something (granted most of those functions are performed by the Kodiak but still...)
Also would think that the fighter would need its own character to go with it... none of the characters in ME2 strike me as being fighter pilot material.
am contemplating writing a fanfic about that, a homeworld/ME2 crossover in fact.

I am intrigued by your ideas and would like to subscribe to your newsletter. Seriously though every time they use the shuttle I wonder who is flying it. And its not a VI because shepard bangs on the door over Pragia just as Jack hits the detonator. Plus we know Joker stays on the Normandy so someone has to fly the shuttle so there is already an excuse to have a small craft pilot on board. So add in a shuttle with a thanix tapped to the belly and we are good to go.

That would be like putting a main battle tank's 120mm smoothbore cannon onto your Mini Cooper...

Kirk/Maverick/Charlie Sheen crossover you say?
Would be funny to have a lady's man on the ship, however, there's enough squadmates as there is. Keep 'em all.

PS: His first name better be Buzz.

Following the Battle of the Citadel, human and turian volunteers conducted a massive three-month survey effort to clear the station's orbit of debris. Secretly, the turian Office of Technological Reconnaissance "volunteers" were technology recovery specialists salvaging the main weapon of the geth flagship Sovereign, and large amounts of its valuable element zero core.
Contrary to popular belief, Sovereign's main gun was not a directed energy weapon. Rather, its massive element zero core powered an electromagnetic field suspending a liquid iron-uranium-tungsten alloy that shaped into armor-piercing projectiles when fired. The jet of molten metal, accelerated to a fraction of the speed of light, destroys targets by impact force and irresistible heat.
Only 11 months after the battle, the turians produced the Thanix, their own miniaturized version of Sovereign's gun. The Thanix can fire reliably every five seconds, rivaling a cruiser's firepower but mountable on a fighter or frigate.

There's more to operating a fighter than just having space to park it when it's not in use.

Normandy would need space for maintenance, ergo, take the bird entirely apart for major repairs.  There'd need to be magazines to store ordnance and fuel for it.  You'd also need additional crew quarters for the maintenance crew.

Normandy is already pretty cramped by the end of ME2 what with you bunking people in cargo bays and observation lounges.

With all that said, it might be pretty cool.  I suppose if space was a concern, they could "piggyback" the bird on the outside of Normandy's hull, and the main cargo bay could act as a magazine AND quarters for the ground crews.

I thought the Kodiak was unarmed?

Still, I think it would make sense for Normandy to get an "Assault Shuttle".  Not just some vehicle that transports people, but an armored aircraft with heavy air to ground weapons, and wild weasel (air defense suppression) weapons.  It'd be the perfect thing for close air support of the ground team, when an orbital strike from Normandy would cause friendly fire casualties.

The Normandy must have an untold amount of storage space given the sheer volume of resources it can carry.
