I'll just say it, the circle rotator-style dialogue system sucks.

sorry, but...if you can't tell the tone of what you're going to say from the words and the intent bubbles you have worse things to worry about than what your character is saying.

Also, the dialog wheel/intent bubbles are fine. I tried out all the different speech options in the demo and not once did hawke (male or female) say something I didn't expect.

So you expected Hawke to be referring to *spoiler* his dead father when the blurb said "He will not be alone'?

uh...yeah. Isn't that obvious?

What else would he be referring to?

yes, because thats fairly compasionate...

So? How could you POSSIBLY have guessed he was talking about his dad just because it was compassionate?

Because before Carver/Bethany, Papa Hawke was the only member of the Hawke family to die?

It is what I expected but as I think about it, someone wishing to play the 'complete jerk' kind of character might be hoping for something like "Shut up already or you'll be joining him/her"

OP obviously never played a role playing game before. Mass effect 2 was fine with the wheel and DAII even added icons to MAKE IT BETTER.

there were no walls of text in Origins, so what's the issue?

The redesign of having the dialogue options in a box located at the bottom of the screen to around a radial menu, and aesthetics.

The spacing is different, so the amount of screen the text will take up is different.

I prefer the radial menu because it makes room for the tone indicator (and personally think it looks better than an obscuring box), but this changes the available space for text on the screen.

With the radial menu, the text could obscure faces/important elements of the scene the developers were trying to build if they have to write out ALL of Hawke's spoken dialogue.

Also, and I hate to say it, but from a design standpoint, too much text on the screen around that little wheel would be ugly.

Lol, that's a huge assumption. What indication is given that their dad is dead before that line?

It works for Mass Effect, not Dragon Age. My opinion, though i may prove myself wrong come release.

Well, that's you're opinion. Me personally, I think its the next step in the evolution of video-game RPGs.

You think something that's been around for almost a decade is the next step in RPG evolution?

I thought it was the father because of the fact I read Hawke's bio in the codex just before. FWIW.

Don't act like DAO didn't have dialogue land mines. It did and they were typically more egregious. You could read the line verbatum and still have no idea about the intonation. The NPC might think you were a jerk when you were trying to be playful or flirtatious. I told Zevran "I don't mind.", as in "whatever, we cool?", and he took it to mean, "Bring it on, big boy." And then I went to talk to Leliana and she was all, "I saw you ****ing Zev the other day..." Excuse me?

And as many others have said, having Hawke read aloud exactly what the player just read is bad, bad, bad, bad, bad. Bad.

You could NEVER say what you wanted to say. You were always picking from a selection of prescribed choices. And the reason a wheel is superior is because it is more attractive and every option is equidistant from the center. Your eyes jump to the option you are most interested in. The investigative options are clearly segregated from the decisive options. And it is just faster and better.

Except that the indicator for that blurb is 'charming', and telling someone to shut up is hardly charming.

Unless I've been lied to. :P

I thought I was going to saying something along the line of slaughtering every Darkspawn alive to avenge my sibling.

No it cant, because of the intent (diamond) icon next to it.............you wouldnt logically conclude you were going to kill your mother also.........

So what you're saying is that to make the dialogue system "look better", they makde it nigh unintellibible.

I don't know about you, but to me the dialogue list didn't seem to affect Origins' sales all that much. I don;t know anybody who looked at the game and said "Wait a minute, i have to read 4 WHOLE SENTENCES to get through this dialogue??? Screw this!"

I will admit, I like having my character's statements be reacted to by what words he said. Not whether it was blue or red. Or... purple, is it?

The jerkiest response is clearly hammer red,

Diamond purple is compasion...........while a small leap of vengence could be construed as compassion, I think the spoken phrase better conveys it in context

I never tried to say the Origins dialogue system was air-tight, but it was certainly more reliable than the radial style is. In the 30-minute demo I could only accurately predict about half of the selections

Even then, saying "at least father will have company" is hardly a compassionate thing to say to a grieving mother who just lost a child

Apparently, the OP decided not to bother reading the codex, where daddy Hawke's death is mentioned.

Will let you know once I get the full manual , but I get the feeling it may have different meanings for different situation......regardless Diamond should not = Kill mother also.......or Lets slay some more darkspawn to avenge
