I'll just say it, the circle rotator-style dialogue system sucks.

Topster88 it isnt hard to role play with 3 personalities. Why dont you just stop playing rpgs because you cant even seem choose your dialogue choices. The wheel perfectly indecates what Hawke is going to say with out having to read everthing in a box.

The jerkiest response is clearly hammer red,

Diamond purple is compasion...........while a small leap of vengence could be construed as compassion, I think the spoken phrase better conveys it in context

Even then, saying "at least father will have company" is hardly a compassionate thing to say to a grieving mother who just lost a child

People say it all the time at funerals etc. It's quite a common consoling phrase

I like the conversation wheel but then again I like a good story and playing the part.  Some people like to be in the roles and control the situation more.  I do hope the OP understands that there are many people who do not agree with your opinion.  Honestly is there anyone here changed their mind about how they feel about this after reading the OP?

Apparently, the OP decided not to bother reading the codex, where daddy Hawke's death is mentioned.

Even knowing that his dad died, again, how would you supposed to know what he meant by "He won't be alone"? Anyone who says "Well OBVIOULSY he's talking about his dead father" *click* has ESP and needs to get on Ripley's Believe It Or Not

So how precisely are clear dialogue options and a good story mutualy exclusive?

So what you're saying is that to make the dialogue system "look better", they makde it nigh unintellibible.

I don't know about you, but to me the dialogue list didn't seem to affect Origins' sales all that much. I don;t know anybody who looked at the game and said "Wait a minute, i have to read 4 WHOLE SENTENCES to get through this dialogue??? Screw this!"

No, I said that it looks better than the DAO system.  I also said that it works better and is leaps and bounds more intelligible.  And I'm going to add now that I love it and hope they never revert it back.

And while it may not have affected sales, there were people who did not like the way it was implimented in DAO.

1. It wasn't very engaging.  You were supposed to assume the role of the Warden, but he would do nothing but stand around with the same vacant-eyed expression during every conversation.

With the changes made to DA2, the protag can voice emotions, show facial expressions, actually interact with other people and their environment.

2.  People could not pick up the intent of the dialogue in origins, which resulted in problems.  Just ask all the people who got ninja-manced by Zevran, Leliana or Morrigan because they thought they were being nice or sarcastic when they were actually flirting.

There were also instances where people would say something mean when they interpreted the line as joking in nature or diplomatic.

So if you're asking whether or not people complained about DAO's dialogue system, they did (but then again, when are people not complaining? :P)  It wouldn't have really affected sales because it wasn't something that was exactly known until AFTER people bought and played the game.

Or we might just think that way. There was a line in DA:O you had with Morrigain about touching which she took as sexual and I thought the line was basically loaded with sarcasm.

Well I did not know that, I thought a dev said it's suppose to mean charming. Anyhow I must say it doesn't sound like the most compassionate thing to say. Feels like something you say with a shrug when you don't really care about the deceased in question.

I couldn't care either way which dialogue they could have used. I am comfortable with both ME2 and DA:O

Again, my problem is with the blurbs. In my very first post I pointed out how the pictures were more intuitive than the blurbs. What I want isn't for the pictures to go away, but rather to replace the blurbs with more detailed lines. And no, I don't care if they have to take out their precious radial menu in favor of a list to do it.

What I think this is all about is, if the character has a long answer or question how would they fit that into the bottom of the screen without it looking cramped. Also a real person does not think out every word that they will say (most of the time) just the general idea. This also stops it from breaking up the game play with long dialog sections. Like a real person the character has a "personality" lets say you like females more than males then you can use a angry (hammer banging the gavel) to the males while say the nice stuff to the females or vice verse. While it does seem to dumb it down a bit that is not really all that bad it shows you enough to give your character a "personality" and choice on what type of response the A.I. will receive it as. You may not like exactly what the character says, but the A.I. sees it as you chose the nice thing to say and will take it as that.

Its increasingly obvious this is a my way or highway thread,

OP has resolutely ignored the merits of a voiced protag/paraphrase system, despite well reasoned responses explaining said merits, and has increasingly not responded to questions appropriately or simply asked another question in response.

"I" cant figure out what Hawke will say next, is not a problem with the paraphasing, When you put all of the pieces together you can make an informed decision:

1) context
2)Icon
3) paraphrase

please like i said 90% of Mass effect dialogue leads to zero suprise and thats without  icon help

Well I've heard various iterations spoken at funerals.....so....idk like I've admitted there are flaws, but for me the good outweighs the bad hands down

As I said, it's likely a design/spacing issue where too much text clutters the screen/menu, making it untidy in appearance.

Even with the simplified system in DAO, sometimes the text appeared messy/unattractive simply because there was too much of it.

The new system is cleaner and visually more appealing.

At least, that's my observation.
