I just got a new monitor today and I cannot figure out how to adjust the game to adopt to it.  I more or less fixed the resolution for general gameplay, but whenever I get into conversations/cut screnes, the game behaves as if I'm still playing on an old monitor, so I end up with annoyingly stretched out characters etc. (haven't really tried ME2 yet, so not sure if it does it there as well, but if I can fix one game, I'm sure I can fix the other one)

I tried fiddling with my video card settings, but being barely computer litterate, I'm not really sure what to do beyond adjusting color/brightness/contrast.  all I relaly want to acomplish is for my game to remember that it relaly doens't need to go widescreen on me, the monitor is already there.

please help?

I'm not sure how that's possible. What did you do to fix up the rest of the gameplay, if some of it is still stretched?

Anyhow, look in your monitor's manual, spec sheet, or wherever to find out what its Maximum Resolution is. Might be called something different like Native Resolution.

What you need to do is, in ME1's graphics/video options (can't remember which it's called), set the game's resolution to match. IIRC you may need to select aspect ratio first. I.e. 1920x1080 is a 16:9 resolution, while 1680x1050 is a 16:10 resolution. If you aren't sure which ratio your monitor's native resolution is, a little bit of math can suss it out.

Normally, you should be able to set the resolution either within the game, or in the Config utility.

thank you and I tried.  when I tried to set the overal resolution to match the ratio of my native resolution  (which is 16 to 9 sorta - its basicaly 1.6 ratio)  the cut scenes look fine, but the rest of the game play is squashed.  I tried to pick the LCD resolution in game  and that fixed the game play, but now my cut scenes are all squashed/stretched.  its like I cannot seem to win :/  I wonder if reducing my native resolution to match highest avaialbe in game resolution will help...

edited to add, I'm starting to wonder about this new monitor......I tried to adjust the resolution on a monitor itself, stickign to the same ratio, but when I reduce it to 1280 by 800 - it shows all squashed as well...even though the ratio is identical.  that's just beyond weird :/

What is the monitor's native resolution, then?

Note that 1280x800 is a 16:10 aspect, not 16:9. If your monitor has a 16:9 native resolution, 16:10 resolutions will either be a little stretched, or leave you with some black bars on the sides of the screen (depending on how your comp is set to handle that).

hmm, must have miscalculated then? its 1440x900 (I have a small computer desk, so I'm stuck with smaller screens :) ) I'm not entirely sure how my computer is set up to be honest, other then auto detect or something of that nature?

Wait a minute, 1.6 ratio? So that sounds like 16:10, not 16:9.

BTW, on this:

The native resolution is what it is. I'm guessing you mean changing the resolution of Windows' desktop? I wouldn't recommend setting that to anything but a native resolution. Certainly not to anything not in its native aspect ratio.

If you can't get the game running in native resolution for some reason, you should at least be able to set your computer to scale a different resolution without stretching/squashing it - but that won't work correctly if Windows itself is not set to your native resolution.

Cross-post. 1440x900 is 16:10.

I have the ME1 Config tool up here. Under the Video tab, change Aspect Ratio to "Widescreen (16:10)" - you should then be able to select 1440x900 in the Resolution box.

I'm a little confused, sorry (and I picked 16 by 9 becasue in my version of ME1, I have 3 different options but they all say 16x9 >_> )

where do I find the config tool for ME1?  the only way I see to change resolution is by going into settings, graphics option.  I have Steam version if that makes any difference.  highest resolution avaialbe for me right now with "correct" ratio is 1280 x 800 :/

:pinched: Should have asked if you have the Steam version. They don't give you easy access to it. So, the easiest way is to do it in the game, if you can. But if that doesn't work, you'll have to manually browse to where Mass Effect is installed, in Windows Explorer. Should be wherever Steam is installed (e.g. C:\\Steam\\) then \\steamapps\\common\\mass effect\\Binaries. Run (double-click) MassEffectConfig.exe

If you haven't yet returned your desktop to 1440x900, I'd certainly do that first. Could be ME takes a cue from it.

First of all, make sure you aren't missing scroll buttons. They blend in to the background, but they should be there.

That said, sometimes ME1 really doesn't detect resolutions properly. If so, you'll need to try the config utility.
