I've got:

Vista
GeForce 9800M GS card
DA2 Demo on Steam
when I hit dxdiag it says my DirectX is version 10

But when I use the configure tool, my renderer is greyed out as directx9.  How do I get it so that I'm using DirectX 10?

I don't think your graphic card can support DX10

Technically the "High" setting just uses DirectX 10. DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 are similar enough that BioWare chose to give them the same renderer switch, I guess.

However, you should still be able to use DirectX 9. Try downloading and installing it here.

Edit:  Maniac, the Geforce 9000 series can use DirectX 10.  Just not 11.

I think it's currently using DirectX 9. That option is chosen and I can't change it.

If your video card can't do DirectX 11, when you select it and a 'High' setting, you'll get the DirectX 10 features.

However, you probably want to play the demo in DirectX 9 at Medium because the other modes weren't fully enabled at that build.

Windows Vista does not come with DirectX 9 automatically installed. Download and install it to be sure.

Here is a picture of my DA2 Configuration screen:

Here is a picture of my dxdiag:

Here is a link that claims my card can use directx10
http://www.nvidia.co...800m_gs_us.html

So from the first shot, you can see that it is locked in for DX9.  From the other two links it looks like I should be able to use DX10.

Your card is definitely DX10 compatible. It's also DX11 compatible, but not 100%. DA2 doesn't come with a DX10 renderer but if you install DX11 you can play on high and you get some DX11 special effects that are supported by DX10 level hardware.

You don't have to install DX11 - if the option is greyed out, try this:

In the game configuration (accessible from the main game window) turn antialiasing off - now you should be able to choose DX11 and then you'll be able to play on high. Very high won't work for DX10. Also remember to turn vertical sychronization off as it may cause problems. It should work then - at least for me, with exactly the same problem, worked like a charm :)

"Should" be the operative phrase when it comes to the demo, of course. The demo is an old version of the game and the DX11 renderer is still buggy. Fine for some people, but problematic for others.

I have a 4870 x2 under Windows 7 Ultimate and the demo will only let me set it to medium.

New bump.  I installed Service Pack 2 which the in-game options said I needed if I wanted to select DirectX 11.  So I'll sum up my problem again in hopes that I get some help.

I want to be able to use a setting higher than medium and my video card SHOULD be able to support it.  What am I doing wrong?

I notice that the dxdiag still says you have DirectX 11. The pages I found with a quick googling do seem to imply that it should come with SP2, though. Is the dxdiag screenshot simply out of date, and dxdiag does now say you have DirectX 11?

Actually, DirectX 11 isn't part of Vista SP2, though sp2 is required to get the update that has DX11. What you want is the Platform Update for Windows Vista. I can't find a direct download link, but you should be able to find it in Windows Update.

I'm stuck with the same problem. As I have already said, I have Windows 7 Ultimate and a 4870 x2 which is DX10.1 capable, but the demo stubbornly sits on medium. This sucks.

Okay, I finally got it to work. I have no idea why it decided to do as instructed, but it's sitting on high now. I set it to DX11 (if available) and high in the configurator. Last time I tried that it reverted to medium in game, but now it's behaving. Sort of, anyway. It's incredibly unstable and keeps crashing, however.

Hi!
I have the same problem here. I´ve got windows vista 64 bit and my video card is ATI radeon hd 4890. I´ve read about it and from what I can tell my card should support directx 10. But I can go higher than medium in the graphics options and I can not chose anything other than directx 9.
And also when I play the game I see some strange "flickering" shadows on the characters when I zoom in on them but not in conversations. Any help on this would be much appreciated. Did you get your problem solved MadLaugter?

I can't get DX10 to run either. My card and everything is DX10 compatible and my drivers are up to date. But it won't go higher than DX9.
