Why must we Europeans wait three days longer than our North American counterparts?

Found this article: http://www.npr.org/b...sed-on-tuesdays

It has to do with music but it's obvious other media producers have jumped on this band wagon. From the article:

Monday: If stores are told to begin selling CDs on Mondays, distributors need to ship them by Sunday, and stores need to pay staff to unpack, inventory and stock over the weekend. That is a bummer. Also, Monday is a government holiday more than any other day of the week.

Wednesday: Stores and musicians can tell people the new CD is available to buy in the middle of the week, but it usually takes a bit for people to motivate themselves on over to their local record store. By Wednesday the week is almost over (I wish).

Thursday: For the reason above, Thursday is more too late.

Friday: Even more too late. But it is payday.

Saturday: It's harder to get press coverage that people see on the weekend.

Sunday: Who goes to record stores on Sunday?

But the way it goes is if the company is situated in America...they get it first, we get it after...if it's made by a Euro company, we'll usually get it before the Americans do...it's just how it is..

Not to throw water on this comment, but just an example, Fable III, developed by Lionhead Studios in Guildford, UK.
Each game was released in the US first so that theory isn't always true, in fact, it rarely is.

Silent Hill: Shattered Memories if memory serves was developed by a UK developer, again it took months for a EU-AUS release.

The worst part about Friday releases is that if the postal services is late by only a couple of hours, it means that you won't get the game until monday.

There goes the plans for that weekend :crying:

Yeah I do seem to remember some games being released on other dates.

But sometimes it's also because the shops don't follow the "rules" or simply don't know any better.

Used to live next to a shop that put games on the shelf the moment they got them. I got some games WAY before official release.

Sure Europe has more people but in terms of logistics and distribution I think it is easier to ship everything in one country USA and if Europe was a huge united country  I think we could expect them to release on the same day

You are aware that you are, among other things, quoting an official post telling you it's not about shipping?

It's not about it "simply being the way it is" either, unless i just hallucinated queuing up for over an hour at the Black Ops midnight launch, on Tuesday the 9th of November.

I'm almost positive it wasn't an hallucination, as mine typically involve less chavs and bad facial hair and more Mad Moxxi in a bikini.

Close though. :P

Prima. Misschien een beetje extreem, maar alles voor een beetje eerlijkheid :P

And I agree with the 'that's just the way it is' comment. A bit too simple of an excuse if you ask me.

Sometimes we get an early ship -like with ME2-, I'm wondering if it will cripple my account if I do try to register my game before the official European release. I understand that I can't fire it up without logging into the official server.
(By early ship I mean the NA release date of course)

In the US music albums, DVDs and games always come out Tuesdays so it's not just games. I don't know why there is a designated day for this.

At least in the case of music, I understand that the reason new CDs are released on Tuesdays is because it's the start of the "sales week". Sales results are published on Mondays, so new releases come out on Tuesdays to ensure that publishers can get a full 7 days worth of sales data for release week.  I don't know if it's the same for other media, but if all of that data is tracked by Neilsen, then it could be the case. Same reason that movies always hit theatres for the weekend. It's just the way they gauge performance and gather their sales data, project profits and all that jazz.

I got ME2 several days early but the codes were not enabled until the day of release.

Yeah, it's like decades ago, someone said, "it will be like that", and no-one dared challenge that since.

It's been this way since forever with most media products like games and movies. America always gets them first so they have ample time to watch/play and spoil it for Europeans >.> As far back as i can remember North American release dates for games were before Europe. At least you're not in Japan they will probably not get this game for like a year XD

I didn't say it was. It's a tradition that probably isn't going to change any time soon no matter how many times people ask why it's even there. But there's no law against games being released on other days, and so sometimes they are.

It doesn't really have much to do with Dragon Age 2 either :)

I know a few game retailers that post you pre-ordered games a day before release, so Thursday yes please.

Ah, I see, thank's for the heads-up.
I've had the same, but didn't dare to try the codes. :)

The Tuesday for States, Friday for Europe view doesn't make much sense to me, as in I can never remember that being the case to begin with in my lietime let alone the fact it's now 2011 and should really be a non-issue.

If you use a popular entertainment outlet on both sides of the Atlantic such as Amazon be a guide, you can see its not a case for book releases, i'm not even sure a single one of the upcoming top 10 books gets released on Friday.

Same for Blu-Ray films, HP Deathly Hallows P1 is released nearly a week before the States, where as films like Tron get a two and a half week jump ahead for the States over Europe same for the new Narnia film, yet once again none of them are released on a Friday bar the Star Wars boxset which is subject to change.

Popular upcomming music albums are released on a Monday rather than a Friday here.

The only time that it's ever present with this strange three day gap is computer games and even then there is no discerning pattern it just seems random and odd, let alone who in their right mind would from a buisness sense give priority to the 300 million states over 700 million strong Europe, that makes no sense?

Heads-up for my fellow Swedes: GAME.se are notorious for releasing games on the earliest global release date and sometimes earlier. All games I've pre-ordered from them have been sent to me the same time they were released in NA.

I even got the Halo Reach: Legendary Edition an entire day early from them. Great support as well and tons of pre-order bonuses.

/agree

Even Blizzard, an American company released Cataclysm in the US and in the EU at the same time.

So this "America should get it first because that's he way it is" is baloney.

Even if you do it won't make a difference i'm sure there's a release lock on it so the game won't be playable until the 11th.

I'm in northern Europe, and a huge DA2 poster near where I live says the release is on the 10th. I checked a couple of local retailers and they're all also saying the tenth. I'm confused now.
