How come in a thread titled "Recommended" someone has to constantly bash others suggestions? Why not just make your own thread for PWs you dislike and why instead? Honestly. We're all going to have differing views here. Suggest what you will, but leave out the constant belittling of others suggestions please.

With all due respect, the question wasn't asked to you. It was asked to me, and I didn't consider it bashing at all. It's a legitamite question which a lot of people ask. We do use the term A&I on CoA a lot. What we basically mean by it is this:

* A very extensive guild system
* A huge number of scripted quests, so that you don't have to always hunt monsters to gain xp.
* Generally lots of RP by players orientated to Adventure & Intrigue within the city of Arabel.

Sometimes the term is overused, but it sums up pretty well what we are, and how we differ from other servers.

I wouldn't go by kalbaern's list, personally. FRC gets a fairly good player count, but it's very cliquey and the module itself is ugly and plain. I struggle to see anything appealing or unique about FRC. TSM seems quite nice, but it gets hardly any players, for whatever reason, and that doesn't seem likely to change any time soon. WSI and The North would be strange choices too, as they're both quite small-time.

Comments like this might be hurting those smaller servers, and keeping them small ;)

That said, WSI will never be one of the super-large servers. I've been on the staff for such places, and it's not my thing. Quality over quantity. I doubt we'd ever go above 35 for our cap. We go through high and low points on player attendance. School or other issues keep people busy during certain times of year... then free to play at other seasons. So it really depends.

I'm looking for a new place myself, since FRC closed down indefinitely. There are actually more to choose from than I realized. Some that haven't even been mentioned in here, like The Way Inn (which is where I'm playing now).

Just fyi, TSM and Kals server are both filled with FRC players because we both were from FRC. And FRC will be back I think to be honest.

I know both of us still have ties to FRC and many of your friends could easily have migrated to one of our servers to wait Justy and his return.Posted Image

Edit;(Though I have been gone from FRC a long time and was from CoA about the same length of time.)

A lot of it really depends on what you're looking for, as some have said. Luckily there are still some good roleplaying worlds out there, with a fair variety of settings, rules, attitudes towards various things, haks (sizeable, none, or in between). Some also take a looser attitude towards things like Forgotten Realms canon, or PVP, level advancement, and so forth. There's really no "right" or "wrong" answer on any of these, and thankfully there's still some variety worth trying. Since it seems the topic here, I'll provide a few details on the one I work with:

Cormyr and the Dalelands
Gamespy Category: Persistent World - Story
Forum Address: http://www.createfor...lands/index.php
Setting: Forgotten Realms, centered on Cormyr (Arabel) and surroundings to include Deepingdale, the Stonelands, and Western Regions beyond High Horn - present server date is Winter 1374 DR.
Size: Large (Presently on two servers, with a Primary server and a Dungeon/DM Event server)
Age: 5+ Years (Started November 2005)
DM Activity/Plots/Quests: High
Custom Content: High (Custom spells, feats, prestige classes, subraces, some updates to use 3.5e ruleset aspects)
Haks: Large (Significant Clothing, Item, Placeable, Tileset, Creature, etc additions)
Level Range: Up to 40, though the highest level PC is presently 29 (See below)
Level Progression: Starting Level of 3, Quick Progression to ~9, Gradually slowing to 14th, then slower from there on due to restrictions on amount of XP from monster kills per level.
Magic Level - Moderate. (While a fair amount of magic is present, items do not exceed standard D&D abilities generally, with +5 items highly rare. Stores will offer better items to players as they gain levels, up to +3.)
PVP: Permitted with restrictions, primarily story based, and generally not required.
Special Subraces: Permitted on a by request basis. The goal is to allow players to play what they want, while ensuring that resulting burdens on other players are not excessive. Full ECL/Spell-like Ability/Stats are granted for a number of special subraces, and unusual ones can generally be accomodated as well (at least mechanics-wise).
Average Player Count: Roughly 30 to 40 during peak hours, 10 to 20 during off-hours.

Other notes: Although we generally attempt to adhere to the basic setting, the ultimate focus is on roleplaying and having fun, and thus exceptions may be made if need be. Server storyline begins from the 3rd Edition Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting Date (Summer 1372 DR), and has progressed based on story adjustments. Book IV's plotline is just beginning, and while the server timeline deviates from official FR history at the 1372 point, the changes thus far are not so great that anyone new would likely feel lost or confused.

I also have to agree with Kalbaern. The title of the thread is "Recommended" Persistant World Servers. That does not mean to Recommend against any of them.

I have to thank Kalbaern for the recommendation of The North (a/k/a Forgotten Realms-The North). We do try hard to make a world where many people and diffrerent play styles will enjoy role playing.

I think that's one of the differences with the smaller servers that I enjoy. They try harder. Those big servers with many people on all the time certainly have a good reason to be popular. But the smaller ones are more like a second home. Check a few out. Look at the signatures and suggestions of those that are active here. Chances are their worlds are of good quality, small or large.

Truth is, a lot of people here are just advertising their own gameworld (whether they're an admin or player on it). Therefore, I would take some suggestions with a pinch of salt. My recommendation is that you try loads of servers out. A new server each day. You'll eventually find what you're looking for.

Good advice. Unfortunately it's hard to form a complete opinion on some servers in a day. Some get better as you venture further from the starting areas. Some have more players or different RP types on a different times and days of the week. Sure, try out a lot of different places. Check the forums out. Worlds with good RP and active players show it in their forum posts IC. Go back to each a couple of times at different times of the day and/or different days of the week. Yes it's grueling, but once you have found your place, you can settle in knwing that you gave it your best and found your match.

I am very much so looking for a new PW at the moment as well...

I am used to playing Anphillia- and I like that style. Seeing as I have not really played other servers- I don't know what magic level that was, I know there were level caps but that didn't bother me entirely, not sure how strict RP it was...

I just knew the rules and for the most part I really enjoyed the server!

Any help?

Well, I'd suggest my own. A link to the forums can be found in my signature. (The Savage Frontiers and Surrounds)

Arbor Falls by "LoW" is a good one.

"TSM" otherwise known as Tales of the Silver Marches is another.

"FRC" or Forgotten Realms Cormyr.

"WSI" or the World Serpent Inn.

The North.

Most of these and many others can be found in Game Spy under Role Play.

I looked for all of these but couldn't find them? NWN multi right?

Yep. Once within the multiplayer (you have to login) most of those I believe are under the Roleplay section. Some may require dling of haks/CEP to play, which I can say is the case for WSI which is the server I DM for.

The haks allow for more options for clothing, heads, and customizing your toon which many people consider worthwhile. Stop in if you like anytime!

I'll toss our hat in here. If you're looking for something new, try Planescape. More specifically, Sigil: Planar Legends. We have over 400 areas for you to explore, and more custom content than you can shake a stick+2 at. www.planarlegends.com

If that's not your thing, try lordofworms server, or WSI. They deserve more love, than they're getting.

Doing some looking around myself, have tried or looked at some those mentioned so far. Truly there are a lot of choices out there and more on the way from what I hear.

One thing (off topic) i would like to see is a better description of the mod, so when you are on gamespy..a player can read about the server (server details).

TWI is nicely done, good DM's..although they change up some, somewhat too regulated for my taste.
FRC is a moderate build ( i would hesitate to say ugly though), they have undergone recent updates to areas, although their future seems uncertain at the moment. So off the list i would say

Savage Frontiers, is also a moderate build (my opinion, meaning not lots of eye candy), small areas but well done, Dm base changes somewhat but are very approachable, its got a small player base and yes they do try hard to please and accomodate.

Arbor Falls, is a fully fleshed out build, (and why not considering the artist that made it), some tricky scripting ideas too, some things to like and some not to like.

Layonara wasnt mentioned and it has been years since i played there, so cant do an up to the minute report. I remember it as a moderate build with a solid player base, well thought out crafting system and moderate to slow character development. DM's seemed untouchable at times..and cranky(lol). It is passworded and requires a bio.

I havent had much experience with the non Faerun Forgotten Realms servers, none that stuck around.

I would like to hear specifics from folks who have played or tried specific servers, I guess this is more of a critique than a recommendation..but it all depends on what you are looking for in a PW.

DISCLAIMER: None of these comments are made to dissuade anyone from playing on any server mentioned. Frankly i liked something about everyone of them and as a builder I can appreciate good layouts and design.

If you're looking around, take a few and check out Forgotten Realms - The North. Follow the link in my signature below. Lots of detail. Active DM's and Devs. Great role players. Low to moderate magic and slow to moderate leveling. I think you'll find it worth the trip.

Oh, and here's the link for more detail in these forums: http://social.biowar...9/index/3226387
