Let me preface this issue before posting my specs by saying that this is a very recent problem. In fact I marathoned DA for over nine hours without any performance issues or crashing. However, the further I've gotten into the game, the faster the performance of the game deteriorates after starting up. (What was once over 6 hours is now an hour or so in.) As far as heat goes. Has never run warm. That said, here are the general specs. If there is something more specific needed to help diagnose the problem, I'll be happy to comply.

OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit (6.1, Build 7600)
Processor: AMD Phenom II X4 955 Processor (4CPUs), ~3.2GHz
Memory: 4096MB
Direct X Version: DirectX 11

Video Card: ATI Radeon HD 5700
Approx Total Memory: 2805MB
Current Display Mode: 1920 x 1080 (32bit) (60Hz)
>Version: 8.821.0.0
Catalyst Version: 11.2
Direct3D Version    7.14.10.0812
OpenGL Version    6.14.10.10524
Catalyst Control Center Version    2011.0126.1749.31909

- Random additional bit of information: Not sure if this makes a difference or not, but I am using the DA:O Ultimate version.

- Edit Random Additional info: The only other programs aside from DA: O that this machine is running (aside from essentials tied to Windows) would be Catalyst and the Microsoft Security Essentials.

What is your pagefile size when before you start playing? and when you get the lagging?

hm...I've got the same problem as KAAurious...

with the amount of RAM he has, should it be necessary for your PC to use pagefile ?

my specs:

Windows Vista 64 bit

AMD Phenom 9550 2.37 GHz

8 GB RAM

HD5770 xxx

All drivers + Dragon Age are up to date

Got about 70 Gigs of disc space left...

Pagefile size is managed by the system (8490 MB)

I mean, I can't imagine DA needing as much memory...

Over a period of roughly two hours. I tracked the amount of memory that DA was eating up through the task manager. Under the processes list this is what I saw.

Starting:
Dragon Age: 791,092k
CPU: 40

Midway:
Dragon Age: 1,024,540k
CPU: 59-62

Finishing
Dragon Age: 1,025,020
CPU: 80

I am not using any mods whatsoever. Dragon Age itself is up to date as well. What seems odd to me, is that this problem wasn't present until I was further into the game. (This is not my first file, either.)

>Random other bits of info:
- HD has about 850 gigs of space on it.
- Problem is mostly related to loading times.
- Is my lack of computer knowledge obvious yet? Still trying to provide as much information as it comes to me.

You be amazed at how much pagefile size can influence DA:O
do a DXDiag and see the size of your pagefile. Over 2000MB and you are in the area for trouble. I keep mine well under 1000MB usually below 800MB

So I am in trouble on that note. Before starting up DA:O I'm sitting at 1558MB. Upon opening it I'm at 2701 MB. Still very strange that it would impact DA:O so much, as every other game I own. (Be it Crysis, ME2 or what have you) they all work great and without any level of pause or longer load times.

No, you're not doing too bad on a Win 7 machine with that starting pagefile. That's actually normal. What I would look at, however, are what programs are loading at startup... mouse configuration stuff, Microsoft office toolbars, that crap.

Remember the old joke? Guy walks into the doctor's office and says, "Doctor, it hurts when lift my arm over my head!" and the doctor says, "Then stop lifting your arm over your head." If you're getting slowdowns after six or nine hours of gameplay... then when you take a bathroom break... save game and reboot the machine.

I think you need to do two things... one, be honest and determine how much multitasking or switching between applications you're doing... playing nine hours and not checking your e-mail? DAO runs best when it's running alone.

Second, I would encourage you download something like CPUID HW monitor (free version) and really track the temps on your system... even a little overheating will cause the system to back off the throttle... which is a good thing, since it's designed to keep the hardware from being damaged. Like the check engine light in your car....

Finally, keep in mind that DAO uses its own game engine-- even other EA or Bioware Games (liek ME2) use other engines. So DAO is going to perform differently than other games on the same hardware.

I found that I reduced crashing and lagging by getting under 1000MB. 1500MB isn't bad, but the poster can get more performance by tweaking his system, along with your suggestions on watching what loads at startup. Win 7 does load a lot of services that are not required by most people.

At the moment pagefile size is 14.627 MB :P

since my system manages the size of pagfiles, I assumed it would be ok...

I'll try lowering it to 1000 MB, see if that will help.

Pagefiles are slower than "physical" RAM, so why would DA:O prefer to load em in there ?

This is how I have mine pruned down for DA:O

Memory: 4096MB RAM
Available OS Memory: 3070MB RAM
Page File: 797MB used, 8411MB available

That is before I start DA:O

I can get a lot of playing time before hitting lagging problems(typically 4-5 hours) and I can days between CTDs

This is on a machine that is not a real gaming machine.

Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit (6.1, Build 7600) (7600.win7_gdr.101026-1503)

System Model: HP Compaq dc5750 Small Form Factor
BIOS: Default System BIOS
