To whom this may concern,

I was wondering if bioware has ever concidered porting games to linux. For starters the mac system (current one) is unix based and uses openGL. The Linux operating systems such as ubuntu are also unix based and use openGL. PS3 also uses a form of openGL. So if bioware can port games onto a mac and PS3 why not linux? Mac is just a rip off of Linux (that is stripped down and locked down) and I'm sure the coding envolved is not very different. I know many people who are converting over to linux and would be happy to purchase games from bioware.

Cheers

This isn't the place to reach Bioware. We are gamers here, that's all you'll hear from. I'm sure when the Linux people are economically attractive to EA, it might happen. In the meantime, you will have to play older / simpler games using WINE.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

I'm sorry, but that was a good one. A hardcore 3D game? On Linux? Right....

They have done in the past. Neverwinter Nights has a native linux version. That they have not done so since probably indicates they do not believe they can do so profitably. Which is a pity. I'd love to have native linux versions of ME, ME2 and DAO.

I'm afraid the Unreal 3 engine never got a Linux port. Unreal Tournament 3 was originally promised to be ported to Linux and get a release in 2007/2008. This never happened. Some people originally blamed this partially upon Microsoft, but that fact of the matter is Bioware produced the game content and modified the engine, they did not construct everything from the ground up. As far as I know no one has even got a basic port of UE3 on Linux working, I don't know if licensing/legal issues are a problem here, but it is a possibility.

As others have said, these are not the Bioware folks you're looking for. I'd suggest looking for an appropriate contact e-mail on their site, or at least posting this in General.

Yes, no major studio would ever be interested in bothering with OpenGL and other OSes. What was the OP thinking? ;)

There was an Unreal 3 port for Linux. It was mostly done and almost ready for a beta. Screen shots of it running on Linux and Mac were posted by Ryan "Icculus" Gordon who was paid to do the port. Then something happened between Ryan and Epic. No one knows for sure what exactly happened but he stopped working on the ports. Some have suggested it's because Epic hadn't paid for previous work done by Ryan and he was telling them to pay for the old stuff. Unreal 3 didn't do all that well so I imagine given the issues they paid him for whatever work he had done at that point and canceled the project. Epic almost went under from the Unreal 3 disaster. Once Gears of War came out then they were sitting pretty again and money was no longer an issue.

Since neither Ryan "Icculus" Gordon or Epic are talking about what happened there, we will never know for sure. We do know that there was a semi-playable version though based on screenshots posted. Ryan used to have on his online resume a line about the Unreal 3 ports, he has since removed that line. Here is the web page with the screenshots.
