I'm just going to play the mage and blame accident in question on Bethany's lack of chest armour.

For that matter in case of Carver blaming it on his preference for iconic shirt over some decent splintmail works, too.

I'd imagine the reason she flipped out is because the game leaves you no choice but to act like a cold douche, even if you're being heroic. My character can't shed a single stoic tear, kneel beside his mother and put an arm around her? He has to go "HIS DEATH WAS NOT IN VAIN" like some idiot with no connection to the guy?

Dear Mrs. Hawke,

Bethany never listened to me anyways. Not my fault she was an idiot and charged an enraged, homicidal ogre... IT'S YOURS FOR RAISING HER THAT WAY. ;)

The codex calls her Leandra Amell. Why do people think she even goes by the name Hawke?

Because we're coming at in from our own cultural context where a woman takes her husband's name and keeps it after he dies.

It's no different than the people playing female PCs that thought BioWare had been sloppy with the gender variables because they kept on being called 'Sir.' Or people who are surprised when Chantry Sisters can have sex and Templars can get married.

Because she actually blamed herself.

Here in Belgium I was surprised to learn that a woman keeps her maiden name when she gets married. The children tend to get the father's name, but it may well be that Leandra Amell is still your mother's name, if they did experiment with new customs of marriage in the DA universe.

Isn't it, like over here, pretty much an open choice? You can decide for yourself if you keep your maiden name or take on your husband's surname?

I do believe the proper title is Mrs. Miss implies she is unwed.

I'm not sure if being a widow changes the distinction with regards to this, but I would be surprised.

Leandra's proper title would be Mrs. Malcolm Hawke.

I was unaware the Mrs. title included the husband's first name.

If Thedas was modern America.

Well, I assume if she's reading forum posts...

I don't even think they have Ms, Miss, Mrs in Thedas, I don't recall a woman ever being referred to as such.

I've heard informal titles:
Lady
Mistress

Formal titles:
Ser <- Might also be a respectful, informal title
Sister
Bann
Arlessa

In setting, I think that's a fair point.  And actually now I'm curious.

OOOOOh, that's even more interesting.  I found myself wondering if her nobility would make her Lady Amell or Lady Hawke.  But if they don't take names (or if they weren't formally married), then it's even easier.

Just remember, the favorite child is the one lying dead in front of the ogre.

Um...okay? Everybody attacked the ogre. She was grieving and upset, as one of her sons had just been killed. I wasn't surprised that she lashes out at you (the oldest one).

i think the real irony here is that hawkes mom yells at him/ her for not stopping their sibling from attacking when there was nothing that hawke could have done. But in origins the HNs mom who has the same VA does not blame them for the death of Fergus's wife and son even though the HN could have saved the two were he/she not busy banging Iona or Darrien.

If you're a woman and you live with a man for any length of time, people will start referring to you as Mrs. XXX YYYYY. Like my mother's bank and credit card company changed her last name in their records because she lived with a guy for three years. They weren't married, just living together.

That seems a bit absurd.

But heck, my mother still gets my father's mail for some god awful reason.  So I shouldn't be too surprised.

I'm pretty sure I distinctly heard Carver mutter a name just before he ran off to fight the ogre.

Does anyone know who Leeroy is? Did Carver owe him money?

Was irritating. Ruined Mama Hawke for me. As far as i'm concerned until she apologizes and makes cookies...or a nice cake, her and Hawke are in a fight.
