Did you know 1987 came before 1996? Just curious.

You are talking graphical mmorpgs or single player games?

It was answer the history of graphical mmorpgs, but I have feeling now that they where talking single player RPG's.

Maybe little like:

Akalabeth: World of Doom 1979
Wizardy 1981

I won't, maybe years into the future I will. But I could barely stand to keep playing DAO before DA2 was announced. Not that I hate it, but I've played it so many times it's gotten incredibly boring for me.

Doing my last round of DA:O now till DA2 is released. It is so much better with audio muted and Itunes playing in the background.

I don't know.  It depends.  If DA2 or DA3 rewards different DAO playthroughs enough then maybe so.  Now I see no reason to expect that the rewards will be enough to merit another 50-60 hours in a game I've already played a lot of.  But it's always possible.  Jury's still out on how much Bioware will end up doing with character imports in the DA series.  Could be really cool.  Could be just okay.

At any rate, I think if I go back to DAO it would be inspired by DA2 or DA3.  Though I suppose nostalgia is possible as well.  I've started looking into how to get BGII to run on my computer--so you never know.

Okay, so you are saying, 24 years ago, Final Fantasy tacked itself falsely on the RPG definition.

Then provide an example(more would help) other than Ultima hopefully that defined RPG.

Well, RPGs, by most definitions, involve a certain degree of choice when it comes to progressing the story. My experience with Final Fantasy is that you have about as much choice as in Halo.

Then to back up your statement, please provide an example other than Ultima that defines RPG and predates Final Fantasy.

I never played Ultima. That's Sylvius's thing. Though, I'll add that predating Final Fantasy is entirely irrelevant, because Final Fantasy does not fit the definition of RPG in use at the time. Regardless of how Square labeled it, it wasn't an RPG. Dungeons & Dragons, which predates Final Fantasy by over a decade, is an RPG. The only similarity is "XP, LEVEL UP, LOOT." Those are staples of an RPG, yes, but they don't make a game an RPG.

Who knows? I tried to do another playthrough before DA2 comes out, but once I got to Orzammar I lost interest. This would be my 4th time through the game though(not including partial playthroughs).

I've finished Origins seven times and Awakening five. While I certainly wouldn't rule out playing it again a few years in the future, I've seen most of the content I wanted to see. And a lot of games stacked up in my 'to play' pile while I was spending almost all my gaming time last year playing DA over and over again. I actually hope that DAII is shorter or less compelling on repeat runs so I can play something else occasionally!

Sorry, but that's bull. I was old enough at the time to be able to read video game magazines and whatnot, and it was always referred to as an RPG both in print and colloquial use by gamers. It was also widely well received for having a story (though not as tight or coherent as games of today) as opposed to the rather highly abstracted gameplay/story elements of RPGs that came before it. That doesn't mean it was the first, but it was a significant point in video game RPG history and became highly influential. The Dragon Warrior series was also referred to as RPG, shared many similar mechanics and story features with FF and came out on NES at just about the same time.

I will simply because I want an rpg not an Action rpg. I am not saying DA2 is bad, but If I wanted Zelda I would play zelda.

From wikipedia;

"Final Fantasy takes place in a fantasy world with three large continents. The elemental powers on this world are determined by the state of four orbs, each governing one of the four classical elements: earth, fire, water, and wind.

Four hundred years prior to the start of the game, the Lefeinish people, who used the Power of Wind to craft airships and a giant space station (called the Floating Castle in the game), watched their country decline as the Wind Orb went dark. Two hundred years later, violent storms sank a massive shrine that served as the center of an ocean-based civilization, and the Water Orb went dark. The Earth Orb and the Fire Orb followed, plaguing the earth with raging wildfires, and devastating the agricultural town of Melmond as the plains and vegetation decayed. Some time later, the sage Lukahn tells of a prophecy that four Light Warriors will come to save the world in a time of darkness."

You call that a story ? o_O

I could have wrote something like that when i was 8 year old.

A role playing game is something where you can interact and make decisions.Final fantasy is exactly the opposite. They are extremely linear(in particular the last ones) and you make no choices besides whom you use in battle and what sidequest you wanna do.

I agree that FF serie brought a lot to videogames but they didn't bring anything linked to rpg.
