I'll be playing Lady Hawke for sure. If a game gives me the option to play as a female I always do. As a female gamer you get used to playing both genders easily as there is always more male protagonist in games anyway~

Looking at statistics, there are more male gamers than female gamers, thus males are catered to for higher sales. Hence why in games where choosing both genders is a possibility, most marketing is done using the male character(as males can place themselves in the role of a male lead).

Judging by this forum, female playthroughs will dominate male playthroughs. Hell, I'm a male that plans to play a female Hawke.

But this forum does not represent the majority of Dragon Age players. This forum is just a haven for the more vocal and passionate players to discuss their likes/dislikes of Bioware's games.

So overall? Males will be played more than females.

As far as the forum is concerned? Safe bet is females will be played more than males.

Thats a big assumption.  These forums have thousands of members, and most of them won't say one way or another whether they plan on playing FemHawke or DudeHawke; even if you were to put up some silly poll.

It may seem that most forum members will play FemHawke, because FemHawke players tend to be a lot more vocal about their choice than DudeHawke players likely due to some kind of inferiority complex.

It's the FemShep/DudeShep phenomenon all over again, except not nearly as bad.

Going with male Hawke for my first mage play through.

After that...probably going with Female Hawke for warrior and rogue. I do like her voice acting better for the most part.

I'll be playing both eventually, but I'll definitely play MHawke the first time or two.

I'm a guy but often play as a female character. The voice acting settles it, I am definitely playing FemHawke on my first play-through.

Side-point: I once read that male Western gamers tend to play as their own gender because they like to put themselves in their character's shoes. Male Japanese gamers however tend to play women because that's what they'd rather look at during the course of a game. Don't know how true that is, but I agree with the J gamers.

I play both. I'll probably end up playing Lady Hawke more though. I'm going to be starting with a male however.

Being a male player who has always planned to play my first character as “myself” (male, young, scarless/tattooless, fairly straight-forward, typical, short hair, ginger, almost exclusively morally good), and also planning at least two playthroughs (though always more like at least four – the second being an “evil female”, in order to get what I see as the exact opposite playthrough to my first), I never thought that would change. I’ll “confess” another reason for playing the male character first is (probably because I’m a real-life male), I’ve always preferred the female love interests to the male ones... Then, while waiting for Fable III to be released, I heard at least two of the developers (one of which was female, I admit... Louise Murray) say in interviews that, this time, they actually thought the female Hero was a better, more engaging, choice to play through. Hearing that then reminded me of a particular quote/saying that I heard while watching a ‘behind the scenes featurette’ of the Tomb Raider games. I believe it was the creator of Lara Croft (Toby something?) that said, paraphrasing only slightly, “women want to be her, and men feel the need to protect her”... Although when the game was released and I started it, I flipped a coin over it, resulting in a male “win”, but then I quit about three seconds into the opening movie, and then chose the female Hero... Now, I can’t say what it’s actually like to play the male Hero in F-III, partly because I enjoyed the female Hero so much, and partly because I was disappointed in F-III’s somewhat extreme lack of choice/decisions (even compared to the first two games), but, from my very positive experience of the female Hero of F-III, I’ll definitely be playing the female first in Dragon Age II, although that might indeed mean I have a lesbian relationship with Isabella... Also, the female will still be the DA version of myself, at least in terms of morality/decisions made, and though I’m almost certainly going to create a custom appearance, it might not be as radical a departure from the default female hawk as I’d normally aim for.

Also, although in ‘class’ RPGs such as Bioware’s, although I usually play as a warrior/guardian/vanguard etc. on my first playthrough, basically so I can be a big part of the combat, with less risk of being killed if I’m ever on my own against a load of enemies, since I’m tired of having to put Leliana in my party (not that I never wanted her in my party) just to open locked doors and/or chests, and, while playing as a rogue in my most recent playthrough of Origins, still being, arguably, the most powerful person in my party (both in melee and ranged), I decided to play as a rogue for my first playthrough even before I actually got a chance to play as any of the DA-II classes.

So, in short, for my first DA-II playthrough, it’s going to be a female (similar “good” personality, different in appearance) rogue... probably archery, but that’s still debatable.

I was going to comment on the one big problem I did have with playing as a female Hawke first - basically, if Bethany died at the beginning of the game, I'd rather be male (that whole 'protective older brother' idea), but then I remembered I'd be playing a rogue and so she'd survive anyway ( and, this time, I can be 'protective older sister'...

Also, Riona45, I disagree. Ok, I can only actually speak for myself, but as a male player who will still be playing as 'me', just with a female character, but I'd like to think the character's gender isn't that important so long as you have the choices (and consequences) in the game to make the player "your own"... In terms of getting more publicity out there for the female Hawke and female Shepard and what not, I don't think it would make that much of a difference to the player's gender-choosing once they actually started the game... However, again, I admit I can only speak for my thoughts, beliefs, and experiences.

I will play female the first time thru. My awesome kick-ass warden in DAO was female, and my super bad-ass Sheppard was also female. I have my reasons, and they have nothing to do with sleeze !! i am all man in real life and have NO gender issues !

yeah for some reason i just like to see how peole react in the game. i recall how people in the game would  like wat a female warden and ur a elf? or when ur sheppard how they said things too cuz the character is a girl. i dunno it just make it feel more liek u need to show them up XD

i would have love if hawke could been a elf also. just to see how people will react more about a elf being the hero XD

I was thinking about it before I saw the male preset with the glorious mustache in the modded demo. I'll definitely play as LadyHawke at least once, though.

I don't feel too badass playing as lady hawke. I'll probably pick her when I roll a mage.
