Judging by this forum, female playthroughs will dominate male playthroughs. Hell, I'm a male that plans to play a female Hawke.
But this forum does not represent the majority of Dragon Age players. This forum is just a haven for the more vocal and passionate players to discuss their likes/dislikes of Bioware's games.
So overall? Males will be played more than females.
As far as the forum is concerned? Safe bet is females will be played more than males.

Thats a big assumption. These forums have thousands of members, and most of them won't say one way or another whether they plan on playing FemHawke or DudeHawke; even if you were to put up some silly poll.
It may seem that most forum members will play FemHawke, because FemHawke players tend to be a lot more vocal about their choice than DudeHawke players likely due to some kind of inferiority complex.
It's the FemShep/DudeShep phenomenon all over again, except not nearly as bad.

After that...probably going with Female Hawke for warrior and rogue. I do like her voice acting better for the most part.

Side-point: I once read that male Western gamers tend to play as their own gender because they like to put themselves in their character's shoes. Male Japanese gamers however tend to play women because that's what they'd rather look at during the course of a game. Don't know how true that is, but I agree with the J gamers.

Also, although in ‘class’ RPGs such as Bioware’s, although I usually play as a warrior/guardian/vanguard etc. on my first playthrough, basically so I can be a big part of the combat, with less risk of being killed if I’m ever on my own against a load of enemies, since I’m tired of having to put Leliana in my party (not that I never wanted her in my party) just to open locked doors and/or chests, and, while playing as a rogue in my most recent playthrough of Origins, still being, arguably, the most powerful person in my party (both in melee and ranged), I decided to play as a rogue for my first playthrough even before I actually got a chance to play as any of the DA-II classes.
So, in short, for my first DA-II playthrough, it’s going to be a female (similar “good” personality, different in appearance) rogue... probably archery, but that’s still debatable.
I was going to comment on the one big problem I did have with playing as a female Hawke first - basically, if Bethany died at the beginning of the game, I'd rather be male (that whole 'protective older brother' idea), but then I remembered I'd be playing a rogue and so she'd survive anyway ( and, this time, I can be 'protective older sister'...
Also, Riona45, I disagree. Ok, I can only actually speak for myself, but as a male player who will still be playing as 'me', just with a female character, but I'd like to think the character's gender isn't that important so long as you have the choices (and consequences) in the game to make the player "your own"... In terms of getting more publicity out there for the female Hawke and female Shepard and what not, I don't think it would make that much of a difference to the player's gender-choosing once they actually started the game... However, again, I admit I can only speak for my thoughts, beliefs, and experiences.

I will play female the first time thru. My awesome kick-ass warden in DAO was female, and my super bad-ass Sheppard was also female. I have my reasons, and they have nothing to do with sleeze !! i am all man in real life and have NO gender issues !
yeah for some reason i just like to see how peole react in the game. i recall how people in the game would like wat a female warden and ur a elf? or when ur sheppard how they said things too cuz the character is a girl. i dunno it just make it feel more liek u need to show them up XD
i would have love if hawke could been a elf also. just to see how people will react more about a elf being the hero XD
