can someone please advise how to attack characters, is there a article written on bioware somewhere that i can read and learn how to attack and get persons to cast spells, your help appreciated

There is... the manual. Why don't you check that? (should be in pdf form in your installation folder).
If you can't find them, the manuals for BG1 and BG2 are available online now.
