First Bioware Game: Neverwinter Nights

Year: 2002

It was my first Bioware game, after that I bought a XBox just so I could play KOTOR 1 when it was released. Since then I've gotten every title Bioware has released Jade Empire, ME 1, ME2, DA:O. I've honestly always liked their games more on PC so was glad when KOTOR 1, Jade Empire, and ME were released on PC.

My first game was BG, back in 1999. I loved it, but I can't say I did very well playing it. I had gotten into Baldur's gate by the time BG2 was released. Then I played BG2 for a year before I went back and finished BG.

I was very hyped up for NWN, thinking that it would play like an imagined BG3, and was very disappointed with it. Then BioWare started making console games, and since I don't have a console, I stayed away from their games for a few years. I got hold of a used copy of KOTOR, which I thought was great in around 2006, and since I knew Dragon Age was on its way since my NWN days, I started hanging around in the old forums and read a lot about ME. When I got a new computer a year and a half ago, ME was the first new game I played, and I thought it was pretty cool. I loved DA:O and DA:A, both of which I pre-ordered, and I bought ME2 last summer which I liked better than its predecessor. That's the story of my gaming life.

Neverwinter night for me. I remember I spent an hour in character creator alone. Bioware had my soul ever since.

My first character got killed by Minsc deep down in the Nashkel mines, so I had to start from the beginning ~~

I started to play cRPGs with Baldur's Gate. However I can only get my BG2 working on my current PC which is sad. I still play it sometimes.

When I concsciously began to play 'BioWare games'? With KotOR, I think. That was the first one where I've said: "Oh, this can't go wrong, it has the BioWare logo!" :)

Grade 8 for me, Original like 5-6cd Baldur's Gate flip folder thingy edition. Got it off a friend, traded for some Magic the Gathering cards.

I had to buy two Baldur's Gate Two's, my CD2 was used so much it burnt through. Loved the ****** off that game. Got the Expac's, modded the crap out of that baby so much with all the fan based mods.

Also played KOTOR but not the second one, heard it was basically the same game with different characters.

And played DA Origins to death. Circle Mage renegade, Dwarf exiled princess, Dalish Archer extraordinaire, Duster dagger twirler and battle bard. And finally lyrium starved nutter templar of cousland.

If you are willing to take the clumsy graphics, and the "whoohow, it's old" feel, I suggest to try KotOR.

It's like the modern BioWare games, has a lot of common with both of Mass Effect and DA:O. Except that it's in the SW universe.

(And it has one of the best twists in gaming history.)

I think I've played through KotoR close to 10 times. With the coming SWTOR, I might play through it again. Easily one of my top 5 Bioware games.

Baldur's Gate, 1998. Urgh makes me feel terribly old to some extent but I was young then away, I don't think I was even aware it was an RPG (or what exactly an RPG is). I just remember falling in love with it and remembering the name Bioware for a really long time. Though it was about 5 years till I played another Bioware game from then (KOTOR). I only recently played (3 years ago) BG2, because to much horror, I wasn't aware of it's existence.

I just did a few months ago, if you are in the mood, you'll need this guide too: http://www.lucasforu...ad.php?t=194296
With it, both game ran without any trouble.
It felt a bit old, but really nostalgic and satisfying. :)

Baldur's Gate

I remember a lot of whining on the forums before BGII was released.  Here's how some of it went:

"In Baldur's Gate, a forest map could be huge.  And you'd have to wonder around to even find something.  You might even miss it.  That made what you found feel even more special.  By making everything obvious and by shrinking the maps down to what matters, you're cutting down on exploration and streamlining this whole process as a concession to people with no attention span."

"Gah.  I hate this art style.  What the hell happened to Edwin and Minsc in their portraits?  I hate this cartoon crap over the realism we had before.  Has someone been playing Final Fantasy?  Gah!"

In other words, the whole thing about casuals ruining everything has been a constant in that even Baldur's Gate II experienced it.  But nowadays people have nothing but praise for BGII.

That said, somewhat to my regret, I checked out of Bioware fanboyism when Neverwinter Nights was released.  I just never liked that game.  I tried.  Bought it.  Got bored.  Quit.  Bought expansions.  Got bored.  Quit.  Bought the Platinum edition.  Got bored.  Quit.  Bought the Diamond.  Still bored.  Not liking that game disappointed me. Why has my favorite developer forsaken me, leaving me only Bethesda and, oh brother, Blizzard. What was it?

I remember Gaider saying something (to someone else) like "If you want a party-based game with lots of party dialogue, this isn't it.  That isn't what we decided to make."   This is not a direct quote.  And it might even be misremembered.  But I remember thinking "Yeah.  And that's a damn shame.  Because I'm still obsessed with BGII and wanted this to be more of that."  Really, NWN always felt like a mod creator with a campaign tacked onto it.  Sorry.  That's probably unfair, but it felt like that. I also didn't like the UI or the camera.  Maybe those were as much of an issue as anything. Though I also didn't like the beginning portions in the city either.

Then Dragon Age piqued my interest.  A spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate?  Now it's all Godfather and they pulled me back in.   And indeed shortly into the game after encountering Old Ben Kenobi Duncan, Alistair and Morrigan, I felt like I indeed was playing a spiritual successor.  Once I heard Morrigan mocking Alistair in Lothering, I knew I was playing a spiritual successor.  So, after storming through the game, I checked out the forums and saw nothing had changed.  I saw the same whines about DAO that I'd seen about other RPG's that would go on in time to be remembered fondly.

At any rate, DAO caused me to wonder what I'd missed from Bioware.  Had I forsaken them to soon and over too little?  That convinced me to go back and get Mass Effect and Jade Empire, both of which were great.  (Maybe I"ll try KOTOR one day.)

Baldurs Gate was my first BW game, complete accident, i`m farm boy and we didn`t have a gaming store close to were i live, but i traveled with a few friends in to the closest city and brougth my saving so i could buy a couple of games. Now that happened to be around the day Baldurs Gate was released and the first gaming store i got in to had a huge pyramid of Baldur games standing in the entrance. So it ended up been one of 3 games i picked up that day. One of the best buys ever :)

Can`t remember when i joined the forum.

Top 5 out of 11 games in total, where three of them are Shattered Steel, MDK2 and Sonic: Dark Chronicle? I'd be more interested in knowing what three remaining games aren't on your top 5 list.
I'll grant that I haven't played those three games, or Jade Empire, so that's seven games still competing for my top five. If I have to pull out two more, it's probably NWN and ME, since you don't get full party control there, and I prefer ME2 to ME, because if I'm not going to have full party control, I 'll prefer an full blown action adventure to managing details in the inventory. Still, with a top 5 list, there's plenty of room at the top ;)

Shouldn't this be in off-topic?

Anyway -

Baldur's Gate 2 when I borrowed it off a friend in 2001ish, then I loved it so much I retroactively played Baldur's Gate. I've been through BG2 so many times I don't need the disc to play it, it's all in my head.

"Ah, the child of Bhaal has awoken. Time for more... experiments. *ZAP!* The pain will only be passing, you should survive the process. *ZAP!* Interesting, you have much untapped power. *ZAP!* Do you even realise your potential?"

(As an aside, Bioware, you need to get David Warner to play a part in one of your games again.)

Since then it's been a decade of being hooked on Bioware games, played every one apart from Neverwinter Nights, just because at the time I didn't have a computer that could handle it and I never managed to catch up. One day, though.

Damnit, now I really want to play Baldur's Gate. I don't have time for this, I need to do my DA:O save import run!

Edit: KOTOR was also definately a gem.

I played BG in 2000, after a friend recommended it and it was fun. After that I haven't played another Bioware game until Mass Effect (skipped all the Star Wars titles, though the same friend I mentioned before wouldn't shut up about them, but that's just because - I don't know if it is a good idea to say it out loud in these forums - *whispers* I never liked Star Wars very much).

It wasn't until Mass Effect that i became aware of Bioware as a company and brand name.

I was in my late twenties and about to quit gaming completely, because most games would just get boring after a short time, but Mass Effect was a revelation and I couldn't stop playing it.

I started to get interested in this Bioware studio and I came across Dragon Age.

Long story short, today I divide my gaming time exclusively between DA:O, ME, ME2 and soon DA2.

Thanks to Bioware I am proud to call myself a gamer again.

And i really like what they are doing with those games, you know, all those things that a lot of people complain about, it is actually what I have been waiting for in my long gaming life.

The only thing I am afraid of is, that they'll turn one of those two franchises into a MMO.
