No loot for companions - now this is minor to me and major to some but to me it would be nice to have but I am not going to get in a rage because of it. On the other hand take away my loot horeing for my main character I will join the angry mob

What is this about no loot for companions?

Probably he meant that we can't change our companion's outfit

Each companion has their own set of armor, you can change weapons, rings, necklaces, ect, but not their full armor.

Does that mean I can't change the armour they wear or only that the armour they wear doesn't change the graphics? Either would be a shame.

Wow there are a lot of nay sayers here, is it so difficult to simply enjoy a game for its merits as opposed to singling out every possible flaw in it ? Believe it or not games are evolving according to the console market, why ? Because console games sell a LOT better than PC games, why ? Because pirates have managed to DECIMATE PC game sales otherwise we wouldn't be lagging behind in tech, why ? Because their cheap and don't want to pay for a product talented developers have created. This results in developers creating games centric to console hardware. Ever wondered why Red Dead Redemption never came to the PC ?

Roleplaying games are still great, they're just moving in a different direction. When the next generation of consoles are released (let's face it it's inevitable) then the gap between PC and console graphics will be very close. PC's will be a centralised for MMO's, simulation and strategy games. Consoles will dominate most other genres, probably catering to the causal crowd too. There is no distinct winner and I'm positive Bioware will always make great games. Just remember they have to think about both types of gamers, not just PC.

Can't change the armor, they still get upgrades over time and you can add runes to make it better but that is pretty much it.

Thanks. That's a bit weird. And a shame. Finding different armours for different members of the party was fun, along with choosing what was most appropriate for the effect that I wanted. It was great to be able to get King Cailan's armour for Alaister and getting Leillana some dragon-skin armour from Wade. She actually ended up in some Ancient Elven armour and I got her Strength up specifically so she could wear it. Why have they taken that out?

There have only been 4 review so far, and the score are 94, 88, 87 and 85. This not seem negative to me.

RPGCodex (if it's not your cup of tea, it's still good for teh lulz)

Enjoy!

Yes, rpgcodex. One of those called "true rpgers" site. When BG came along they said that it was the end of true rpgs (against for example Ultima) because of it not having turn based combat. Now they think that game and its sequel (that they either bashed at beginning, just on principle) the holy grail of RPGs.

When DAO came along they said the same thing and bashed it as there was no tomorrow, because Bioware dared to call it a "spiritual successor". Now they are defending it as the ultimate rpg against the action-game DA2.

It reminds me of artistic circles where they gather people that would not recognize art neither if their life depended on it. They just cling to the general consensus of the time or on the word of others because they don't possess the knowledge nor the courage to form their own opinions. Yet they consider themselves the repository of the truth and think their judgment the word of the gospel.

To have a little of fun do this little test. Go to one of those artistic circles and read a poem, saying that it's yours, when in reality is of some not so widespread know author as Artaud or Lautreamont (that are however considered two of the better poets of symbolic poetry). You will be bashed as if you insulted the auditorium. Just let them continue for a while then reveal the truth. You will then assist to a tragico-comic scene where these individuals will pull out from the cylinder the most extravagant and improbable excuses and motivations of why they were mistaken. It's so fun... I've done it several times.

DAO was quite well received over there, it not very often that happens, Bioware must have done something right.

For people like me SWTOR will be the "new" WOW, if you get what I mean.

Have you ever tried Guild Wars? I hear it'll play similarly to that. I could be wrong, my MMO "expert" friend can be a ****** :?

Guild Wars doesn't intrest me.
I am not an MMO player, so part of why I am interested in SWTOR is that it does have a full story for each character.
I also like that it is voiced and that I can play the character/toons stories as an SP.

Guild wars is the typical "hey everyone join me in hacking a 400 foot tall dragon for an hour and then take the loot".
I don't like that type of play.
I might get into doing MMO aspects in SWTOR, like the flashpoints if I find cool people to play with or my friends etc.

Part of the reason is that I like the Star Wars universe as well, with this you can go "deeper" than any other Star Wars game has gone.

A fully voiced and story WOW, would not intrest me either, I simply don't like that style.

I think SWTOR will sell many boxed copies (especially if good reviews), I don't know about the staying power it will have, for that they will need to satisfy the hardcore MMO players with a ton of content ( End game).

I hate that I say things and know what I mean and then realize I never actually said what I meant...
I never played it much, only fiddled around playing solo at low levels, and you seem to know more about SWTOR than I do, so I doubt I'm telling you anything new. What I meant to say was that you could go solo and have a group of npcs follow you or have actual players with you. So what I guess I mean is nevermind lol

I can name plenty of FPSs.

No, don't cherry pick my question. I said specifically

FPS/RPG Space Opera hybrids

And now that DA2 is predominantly a console game it is competing against every single party based RPG on the consoles, of which there are many.

Please feel free to direct me to some storydriven partybased tactical RPGs taking place in a standard fantasy setting with a realistic spin. No cherry-picking please.

I'm pretty sure that Mass Effect faces competition from both other FPS games and other RPGs, and its strength is not being a hybrid but being good.

The videos are amusing... looks like Diablo 2 with Soulcalibur melee animations, ported from console to PC so we can use a mouse once in awhile. :P

Bioware has never been my favorite developer - heck I only checked out their games once Origin Systems bit the dust. Enjoyed the BG series well enough, once I was able to mod the annoyances out of it. Dragon Age was okay but I didn't care for the direction Bioware was heading (interactive movie, ultra-linear game design, etc.)...

Thankfully Skyrim is coming. I've come to prefer sandbox games over today's so-called RPG fare.

I may still give DA2 a shot, just so I can say I tried it, but will wait for the inevitable first patch or two. :)

Uh, both BG2, KOTOR, KOTOR2, NWN2 expansions, DA:O and ME2 were well received on the codex. Go troll
somewhere else.

As for turn-based, they *still* find it superior, but realize it's a lost fight. Doesn't stop them from proclaiming turn-based indies as game of the year though.

yep, turn based was once the cornerstone of rpg's, there are people who still don't like real-time rpg's

i remember when turn-based strategy games were the cornerstone of that genre as well and how games like starcraft were ruining strategy in gaming, to be honest i still like turn-based more than real-time, but i still have fun with real time as well and i'll never complain about improvements made to new games because i know it'd be extremely rare for a new game to replicate the fun i had with older games anyways

either work on your own merits or don't work at all

games that are good only because they're like something else you played? what a waste of time
