I think there has been a resoundingly negative reaction to the demo from PC gamers, that much is sure....

Fantastic post, summed up how I'm feeling perfectly.

Cheers man, yeah I don't post on forums much really, but DA:O Awakened (pun intended!) something inside of me. I guess because I really thought this was gonna be the one franchise to watch out for over the next few years. I don't get to play games much anymore these days, but DA:O was just not going to get looked over.

With FF gone to crap completely after the mess that was XIII, I don't really see myself looking forward to much, I'm not a huge first person RPG (or any FP game for that matter, except Metroid Prime) fan, so Skyrim isn't really my thing. Might have a smash at Dungeon Siege III with my gf though. She played and loved Origins (also Dark Alliance) but I know she's going to vomit at the female walking animation, Isabella and no tactical camera.

If I took them seriously, I'd be offended. I am not. I'm just stating that their group of posters leave something to be desired. Stating facts =/= taking something seriously.

The BioWare forums are very creepy. Sure, they're not /g/ level creepy, but I'm not sure we can judge the RPGCodex too harshly.

Hey, I like us a lot :(

Not that I visit every part of BSN, but unless I'm very mistaken, the parts I do visit are probably among the creepier.

Your avatar is fan art of Merrill becoming aroused while reading a sex scene between Varric and Carver. Would you consider that a touch creepy?

What about Fenris having glowing **** and the picture of him as a cat boy chained to Lady Hawke's bed? Or the discussion of Merrill being like an innocent Japanese girl and thus in danger of being tentacle raped?

Would you consider those 'that creepy?'

What does 'on balance' mean?

Okay, what about the speculation that desire spirits were all futanara and the that one fan fiction with Leliana and the Halla?

It's usually a good idea to head into these things with the understanding that those who feel negatively tend to be more likely to post in forums and reply to articles about these sorts of things than those who were either positive or neutral. Does that mean that we don't take any of this into consideration? No, of course not - there are always valid and useful criticisms to take into consideration.

This is somewhat amusing, seeing as your very own forums encourage a discussion culture that attempts to smother any critical analysis of your products.

Criticism? Yes, but only the type we want.

On balance means that compared to those things, my avatar is Mr. Rogers*. I'm not sure what you're trying to convince me of. That I actually don't go anywhere near the creepy parts of these boards? :P

*This is a bad example, because Mr. Rogers was actually kinda creepy.

I think your avatar is cute and not at all creepy.

I was actually wondering if/when I'd bring something up I'd seen on the board that you found 'that creepy.'

Who, besides other posters, smother criticism about Bioware's games? There are usually more negative threads on the front page than positive, at least when I'm on...

Edit- Serious question btw, I'm not trying to start an argument.

'Angry neckbeards' - I like.

I love the Codex. There are some really disturbing threads, even weirder than here I think, and I would never EVER post there because I'd get torn limb from virtual limb (being a Bioware fan and all), but they rage so wonderfully. And they are incredibly passionate about their games, even if it's not always in a good way. If any group of people is going to keep 'old school' RPGs alive, it's people like the Codexers.

OT: A good rant is always so much more satisfying to write than 'yeah, that was good, nothing more to say'. I think Bio knew what they were doing. They'll have weighed the pros and cons of releasing that demo and worked out that they stand to gain much more than they might possibly lose, regardless of the demo's reception on the various forums.

I have not played the Demo, but I will be playing it exclusively on the PC.

The combat issue at hand here is very similar to one I have experienced with the Total War franchise. The speed and movement of the combat is critical.

The faster Creative Assembly (CA) made the combat the more feedback they got from their fan base.

Faster = less control and basically meant your choices had far less impact. Keep in mind Total War is exclusively on PC and as a result the developers had to listen. For a strategy game this was a critical component. CA have found a very good balance at the moment, however here it might be the case that Bioware's DAII team have swung too far in one direction.

As this is a cross platform game, the PC crowd may have to simply suck it up and deal with it.

What will happen is the PC crowd will be the one's getting vocal about it.

I hope they can slow it down for the PC version and get the pacing right with patches.

Just looking at it, that's absolutely true. When you describe it as "fan art of Merrill becoming aroused from reading a sex scene between Carver and Varric..." That idea isn't creepy, but I can see how someone might think me using it as my avatar is creepy.

I've actually never heard of that Leliana fanfic, but I can imagine what it's about. It seems I'm all on board with Hawke/Bethany incest, but I draw the line at bestiality. It might also be because I feel such a personal connection to my Leliana. If it had been about Zevran and a halla, I might not have found it creepy.

My personal boundaries as far as what I'm game for might be on the conservative side (relatively speaking), but my boundaries as far as what I would call creepy are much farther out.

For the record, what Shorts said about rpgcodex people posting pictures of dead cats as a metaphor for BioWare games is something I consider creepy. As with Leliana, that may be just because I really like cats. Who knows?

They want their game to be as successful as it can possibly be and there is only one way to do so: streamlining. Make the game easier to acces thus less complex, change the style to a very broad one, away from stricly European fantasy, add JRPG elements and you have a far wider target audience thus a higher potential profit.

Consoles. This one, good sir. DA2 obviously made a lot of amendments to consoles to...increase profit. Sales on consoles + pc = higher profit. Easy.

Of course, making another "old school" RPG will satisfy us, the guys who want complex RPGs instead of dumbed-down successors, but...who cares? Each one of us is 50$. Everyone else is....50$. More people playing the game = more 50$. It's easy as that.

Or it's possible that they went back to their roots and now it's time to go somewhere else. However, if the reasoning went as you describe, those guys at BioWare seem to be smart people. That's clearly how you run a business.
