Ashley-
I liked her at first, she seemed to be tough and disciplined but also someone who can unwind and relax. Unfortunately, she started whipping out the ignorant (possibly racist) comments. To the people who say she never knew any different or only heard stories of aliens, that does not excuse her, i have met many people over the years who grew up in isloated, bigoted communities and did not "know any better". Does that stop them being racist? No..
Except for that Ashley really ISN'T racist. At most she's a cynical realist who doesn't believe that, when push comes to shove, aliens will look out for humans in a time of danger. That instead they would value their own people above the humans and with that in mind, while she admits that humans shouldn't turn down aliens as allies, they need to be prepared to go alone in case the aliens don't stay as allies.
This hardly sounds like the words of a screaming anti alien psychotic like everyone keeps labelling her as. In addition to her views really not being all that extreme or even particularly aggressive, she also says and does numerous things that contradict the idea that she's a racist.
For example, happily volunteering to assist the Salarian team on Virmire and having no problem working with them and just generally demonstrating respect to them in the process. She also despises extremist groups like Terra Firma and Cerberus, the former of which she'll even angrily confront on the Citadel.
Also at one point in an elevator conversation she will actually hope for improved relations between humans and Quarians thanks to Tali's involvement in helping to stop Saren. She also maintains that she doesn't think humanity is the 'superior' race, or that humans have any right to mistreat aliens.
She even demonstrates the capacity to empathise and sympathise with Liara no less than twice. Once if you get into the 'love triangle' and pick her over Liara and once after the Noveria mission when Liara's mother dies.
The former is Ashley admitting that she feels bad for Liara because 'no one should have to feel like they aren't good enough for something they want' which is something Ashley is certainly familiar with (what with the blacklisted name and everything) as well as adding that she mostly actually mad at SHEPARD, not LIARA. The second of which is telling Shepard that he should go up and talk to Liara because she lost her mum and that has to hurt.
Finally, obviously, Ashley has the capacity to move on past her problems with trusting aliens by having a long in depth conversation with Shepard about her family history and namely about how General Williams was blacklisted from the Alliance for being the first human ever to surrender to an alien race and since then Ashley's career and name have been in the mud in the Alliance military, hence her bitterness.
During this conversation she can finally come to terms with the fact that she needs to blame the Alliance for her family name being blacklisted, not the Turians. After which she actually becomes the most paragon of your squadmates.
So to review, she has some base trust issues due to lack of personal experience and bad history. However she clearly had no problem taking orders from Kirrahe and being the only human working in a team of aliens and in fact,
volunteered for the job. She also hopes for improved relations between humans and another alien race, she demonstrates the capacity to empathise with members of other races, she has no love for extreme pro human groups and she doesn't think humans are the superior race.
And finally, she can be coaxed out of some of her views to be more prepared to be open minded.
If you ask me, all the stuff people throw at Ashley is ammunition they made up themselves, or at least overstated it to a great deal. She really isn't
nearly as bad as people say she is.
I'm fully aware that by making this post I run the risk of people using the same old tired arguments that they've used to the last four years at me but hey, whatever.
Anyway OT:
To be honest here, Tali. No I'm not one of those angry Tali hating trolls who goes from thread to thread eager for the blood of a fresh Talimancer to flame (or at least, I hope I'm not) but I just don't like how she became in Mass Effect 2. She seemed too much like the idealized girlfriend figure and the constant shoving down my throat of how much of a crush she had on me got on my nerves. To be honest I also didn't much care for her attitude regarding the Geth, even in Mass Effect 1 where they were the primary enemy I still found myself getting annoyed at her.
(Honestly, that one conversation about the Quarian/Geth war made me lose great deals of respect for Quarians and start sympathizing with the Geth, which I doubt was meant to be the the point of it)
I don't know if I'd full on call it 'hate' but I do know that she's not one of my favorites either.
