The meaning wasn't warped, it was changed over time. Thats how languages work. Science has nothing to do with the meaning of words used by people. Many words 70 years ago mean something very different now.

In truth languages evolve over time. Words take on different meanings or get new meanings added to them. Science evolves and changes over time. Yes some things are constant like e=mc2 but biological sciences, earth sciences change. Nothing is set in stone, because if it was we as a race would stagnate and die due to the inability to change, grow and evolve.
