So I updated my Nvidia 8600 geforce Driver yesterday to the newest 266.58, and after I did DAO wont work. I start up the game like normal, then after about 1-2 minutes into it, I get a "Dragon Age Origins has stopped working" pop up.:crying:

I looked through the forums all last night, and did the drive cleaner to get rid of all the unneeded stuff from the previous versions, and reinstalled the newest driver again, but still the same problem. Sorry if this has been posted before, but I looked for a while and nothing helped. The game worked perfectly fine before this, and I really have no idea what to do. Im a pc noob, so any help at all would be glorious.

Heres some info on my pc:

Blame nVIDIA. They are very stupid about driver updates that BREAK games for owners of their older graphics cards. Never fix something that isn't broken when you are running so far behind the progress curve (four year old graphics is quite elderly). Go back to whatever driver actually worked and be more careful in the future.

Yes, the newer drivers from Nvidia don't really work well with some of the older hardware.

Is there any way to find a previous driver version that I can download?

If you didn't SAVE the one you used previously, you can look on nVIDIA's download site for their ARCHIVES.

www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx

Start from there.

I decided to start playing DO:A again after player the DA2 demo. Used to have minor problems before with crashes i.e., but nothing that couldn't be fixed.

Just like the OP I installed the newest nvidia driver recently, and just like the OP my game crashes very fast every time.

I bought all the DLC I didn't have before and everytime I start up the Darkspawn Chronicles the game crashes when I run into the very first courtyard after recruiting the very first darkspawn. The longest it took before a crash was about 2 minutes :S

I tried the "set affinity" option in the process tab of the Task Manager, but it didn't help.

Using a NVIDIA GForce 8800 GTS with the same driver update as the OP.

It is really depressing to just spent all that money on DA:O DLC (and Awakening) and a preorder for DA2 and then to find out the game can't even be played for longer than 2 minutes without crashing.

Look at what I told this thread's author in my opening remarks. If you want to complain go to nVIDIA, they're the ones not supporting the Geforce 8n00 and 9n00 cards properly any longer.  I don't know whether to applaud them or to give them the raspberry.  They are bucking Intel, AMD, and a host of larger brand named PC product producers.

AMD and Intel are squared off in the x86 space, putting combined CPU + GPU prcessing in their holsters and so far, Intel has been shooting blanks (bad Chipsets for Sandy Bridge), and AMD's Fab partners are stuck trying to get below 40 nm (which Intel has already done).

nVIDIA is partnering on an ARM processor, and has Microsoft's assurance that there will be a Windows OS to run on it, however, they don't have theirs ready, either (neither Microsoft nor nVIDIA).

Their eyes just aren't focussed on Consumer Graphics at any level but the very highest and very newest.  Their future as a viable company is at stake right now.

Here is where the driver archives are:  www.nvidia.com/Download/Find.aspx

You my friend, are awesome. Thanks a lot, it works just like it used to now. I love you. (In a platonic way of course)
And you too Gorath.:D

Thanks a lot for the help guys, I thought I was going to have to get DAO for the 360, and redo everything.:crying:

My apologies if it sounded like that. I am very grateful for the help the repliers in this post have given :).
I just wanted to let the OP and people who check this thread know that there are more people who have the same problem and elaborate on it a bit.

It is just very unpractical when you use your PC for other games as well, which do benefit from newer drivers. But I guess, from reading the replies and seeing how this has been an issue before, we shouldn't hold our breath for NVIDIA (or Bioware) to help us out anytime soon if at all.

FYI, see the edits to what I told you before, of which this is the key:

" I don't know whether to applaud them or to give them the raspberry.  They
are bucking Intel, AMD, and a host of the larger brand named PC product
producers. "

Both the Low End, and the Medium, Mainline graphics card market is likely to disappear, and there isn't a lot of profitability from selling just a few of the really High End cards for the really high prices those go for.  APUs may very well be the future for most graphics on PC-type hardware, and nVIDIA has to gamble on "ARM" to play in that space.

Installed the old drivers version 196.21. Still have the exact same problem with and without the affinity trick.

Windows Vista 32bit Ultimate Edition Service Pack 2
NVIDIA GeForce 8800GTS
Intel® Core™2 Duo CPU E6750 @ 2.66GHz 2.67 GHz
4gb RAM (I know, only 3.5 working with 32bit OS)
Gigabyte P35C-DS3R Motherboard

Anyone have any clue what might be causing it still, while it seemed to have fixed the problems for the OP?

/EDIT: Lowering the Anti Aliasing from x8 to any lower setting seems to have fixed the problem, atleast for as far as I could see in a very short time period. But 5 minutes of uninterupted playing after crashing in 1 minute on every occasion seems like a very long time ;).
It is kinda weird though, since I never used to have issues like this before when I played the game with exactly the same settings.

Hmm nope. Still have non stop crashes. Now it just takes between 10 secs - 10 mins before each crash happens.

Honestly, it sounds to me like it could be a couple of things.  First, graphic settings will make a difference, so I would suggest you turn *everything* down to its lowest settings to test it:  800x600 res, lowest settings in-game (except gamma, of course) and make sure the Nvidia control panel, under "3D Settings/Adjust image settings with preview" is set to "Let the 3D application decide".  See if the game runs smoothly for 10 minutes on those settings... it will look god-awful, but its a good test.  I suggest you try it without the affinity trick.

Some other things:  Let's not discount the possibility of overheating...the system will slow down or get buggy if you're CPU or GPU is getting too hot.  A free program like CPUID's HW monitor can help you track heat build-up.

Finally, if you've been doing a lot of installing/uninstalling of the display drivers, consider doing a clean uninstall/reinstall.  I've found the Nvidia drivers leave a lot of random stuff behind when you use the Windows Control Panel uninstall/reinstall.  See the link in my sig if you want to try that.

Let us know what happens... we can go from there.

Did you completely uninstall the previous Nvidia drivers before you downloaded the 196.21 version?

I uninstalled all the previous NVIDIA drivers still left on my pc before installing the old one.

Tried the clean install now (with the newest driver), which had no effect at all.

Also my pc has no issue with any other game, just with DA:O so I don't think it is my cpu overheating. (doesn't that also restart your entire pc? I have had that happen before when the cooling got loose a little bit)

The 3D settings were on "Let the 3D application decide", so don't think there is an issue there.
When I lower the video settings to craptastic I haven't seen any crashes yet, even when I turn them up a bit (1680x1050, medium graphic detail, no AA, medium textures) it seems to be OK, but that is only over the course of about 10 minutes, and the game just looks so ugly then compared to how I could run it over a year ago.

I am playing the Darkspawn Chronicles so that is non stop fighting with a lot of NPC's etc. but that isn't extremely uncommon in DA:O.
As mentioned above I use the newest drivers 266.58 with the install, because the driver switching didn't seem to have any effect and my other games (i.e. World of Warcraft: Cataclysm) aren't really happy with the old junk. I can ofcourse switch back to the 196.21 drivers if you think that might help now.

Thanks for trying to help me out :) The moments I actually can play the game I am enjoying it again and I can't wait to be able to properly play it once again.

Then I think what you need to do is find that happy balance between performance and visual quality. DAO uses its own engine, so it's hard to compare it with other games-- even other Bioware games. It is, for example, very CPU-intensive.

Did you also use a drive cleaner program to remove the old drivers while in safe mode? It should work, its been working fine for me ever since I went back to 196.21.

So.. it still crashes with lower settings. And it crashes as well with the clean drive 196.21 install.

My experience differs a bit from the clean install guide though. After I uninstalled the driver it asks me to restart my pc. It doesn't matter if I do the sweep first or not, but when I restart windows it automatically starts to download something (it looks like drivers?) for my graphics card which I can't stop. After that I can install the 196.21 driver, but is has no effect at all on the stability of DA:O.
So no clue if the automatically installed stuff is interfering with DA:O or not. I tried disabling the automatic updates, but it didn't work either.

Follow this guide for removing the Nvidia driver, and reinstalling the 196.21 version.

If you did, and its still not working, then I really dont know.

Yup, I followed that guide.

I finished the Darkspawn Chronicles after a zillion crashes now though, then started Leliana's Song and haven't had a single crash happen as of yet.

That's why you need to do it in safe mode.
