- The second half of the game starts after Hawke gets to the Black City. The Fade's demons realize that the Maker is not in the Black City, so they attack the Imperium, causing chaos all across the Fade. This causes most of Thedas to stop dreaming; most people are unable to sleep or stay asleep, and as a result everyone is starting to go crazy. Civil wars start in Ferelden, and because the Imperium is under attack, their Darkspawn army goes out of control.
- During this chaos, part of the Darkspawn horde, who has found free will now that the Imperium is under attack, decides to join up with Hawke's forces.
- One DLC that is already in the console version of the game allows you to get a Darkspawn ally, Iblis. He pretty much looks like a detailed Darkspawn with horns and a typical demon tail, and his weapon is a scythe.
- The Imperium, overwhelmed with demons, tries to make a deal with the demons: The Imperium offers the demons a permanent tear in the Fade so that they can pass between the Fade and the real world, if the demons will ally with the Imperium. The demons agree, the Imperium magisters tear open a rift between the Fade/Thedas, and then the demons and Imperium begin to attack Thedas together. So basically, the second half (and finale) of Dragon Age is:
Fade Demons/Spirits + Tevinter Imperium
vs
Hawke's Party + Darkspawn + Old Gods + Alistair's armies (Alistair is king in the second half of DA2; they made that canon)
