Let's abandon our country and run away some more. It's like a recuring theme.
From listening to Carver talk, they did stay. They survived Ostagar, like Wynne did. But without becoming abominations. That we know of. Once everyone else was dead, and they had been betrayed, and their king was killed, what should they have done? Stayed behind to fight off the entire horde by themselves? Or go warn their family and get them to safety?
What I was saying was after they ran from Ostagar, they then ran away from Ferelden like cowards!

its just like asking why the warden fled to gather a army for the dark spawn instead of rushing back to them after kikari wilds
The warden would have died had Flemeth not saved him. By then there was no battle to fight.
The issue I have is a lot of people are seeing Hawke and his brother as some sort of last men standing and the darkspawn obviously just let them go..
The more likely scenerio is they ran when the king fell and there were a lot of people still alive at that point. Which is why I have no problem calling them cowards.

Consider Hawke a coward if you like, but if you consider living to fight another day cowardly then there are VERY few brave men in this world.

Lol okay. If by some off chance that everyone in this thread ends up getting drafted into war, and we happen to be in the middle of getting our ass kicked in battle. I'll let you be the first one to charge the enemy while the rest of us retreat.

I will roleplay a Spartan! "Think like a general - Fight like a Spartan!"
I will stand and fight!

Thats from the demo. Champion was a coward and wasnt at Ostagar. I am not saying this as a bad thing i never have been. It just shows that he made a decision along the way to become something more.

Otherwise, not engaging a fight doesn't entail you lack courage or something. It's just not a valid inference to draw that particular conclusion from the set of possible rationales.

This is not a bashing post just a realization i came to about 10 mins ago.
The Champion of Kirkwall started out running away from a fight. He/she was at or near Ostagar and decided to leave running ans screaming away. True it may have been to save the family, but still he/she ran.
There was nobody left to save. The Grey Warden didn't look for survivors too did he?
LETS FIGHT A HUGE ARMY AND DIE!!
Yeah that would be a fun game.

Reasons don't matter its the action that makes you a coward not the reason.
It's even more ironic with the "fight like a Spartan" tagline.
Spartan women would tell their husbands and sons - before they were to head off to war - "With your shield, or on it."

Just read the codex in the demo and its says that Carver was in the kings regiment, but that Hawke stayed at home in lothering with his family. So he didnt go to Ostagar. Carver showed up a month after being gone saying that everyone was dead, and thats when they all decided to run.
Thats from the demo. Champion was a coward and wasnt at Ostagar. I am not saying this as a bad thing i never have been. It just shows that he made a decision along the way to become something more.
Play as a warrior or rogue and it will say that you and Carver was both at Ostagar.

I call it intelligence.
Also, they stuck around untill the true coward (Loghain) betrayed the King and the battle was doomed to fail. Better to run and live to fight another day rather than be devoured by Darkspawn, that's just stupidity. I think that when the Battle of Ostagar crumbled when Loghain quit the field, I wouldn't call it deserting by leaving it afterwords.
Edit: Let us not forget DA2's motto, "Rise to power...by any means neccessary." If the means be to not get ripped apart by Darkspawn I'd say it is justifiable.

Really, it was an obvious losing battle and you can't blame a retreat after the fact that Loghain abandoned everyone was apparent. Honestly, I'd rather people escape when there was obviously no way to stop the Horde so that they could warn people of what's coming and start an evacuation than die senselessly.
