Did Thane having a wife really add anything?

Thane would have been much more interesting if Kolyat was a bastard child conceived from a woman he left that later killed herself rather than being forced into sex slavery by a bunch of mobsters. Thane gets angry and massacres mobsters, then is sad when he realizes what his absense has done to Kolyat. Is that better for you? :P

OP, not every character's past needs to be all "scandalous" for them to be interesting characters. Heck, the fact that he actually commited to someone already makes him an oddball in the rather promiscuous squad.

I get it, the only intellectual point of view is to love the character of Thane, thats a really open minded way to view the world you either agree with Tasha or you or one of the deprived masses who doesn't have the brain power to understand her genius!

Don't even bother presuming to know me when you don't even know who the hell I am. There is no evidence to support you claim I'm afraid, so, I will have to pull the turian councillor on ya. Sorry!
'Ah yes, everyone must agree with Tasha, we have dismissed these claims.'
Or you can have the 'I've had enough of your disingenuous assertions *POW*' Take your pick Image IPB.

I like the fact that Thane had a wife and I do think that has affected him greatly.

Is it really so bad to have a background that's similar to another character's background from a different game?

Anyway, what's done is done, we can't change the fact he had a wife.

My personal opinion on the matter.

I agree, I think it worked for Thane. It has given him more experience and confidence, while it has also added to the depth of his character. Although, I am very curious as to the relationship between Irikah and Thane. From the few hints we do get, it appears that she doesn't approve of his profession as an assassin.

Like I said, his enstrangement from Kolyat was perhaps unecessary, but if I was the puppeteer, I would keep Thane's wife in his story.

Wow, that's a lot of screenshots where Thane smiles. :)

I can't compare Thane to Carth because I haven't played KOTOR yet. When I do, I'll probably end up comparing Carth to Thane, but from what I've read, their situations are different and the fact that both of them have a wife who died is the only thing they have in common.

Sure it does. We needed a character with the "THEY KILLED MY WIFE" backstory. /sarcasm.

Second thing was his philosophy of separating body and soul and as a consequence, absolving himself of the bulk of responsibility for the murders. I'm a big believer of taking responsibility for your actions and choices, especially as an adult, and no matter how many times I hear him describe it - I just cannot relate. a gun, a tool is not sentient. I cannot blame a tool for what it does, because it really has no choice in a matter. Thane does. He chooses to become a tool with no opinions of his own. and even feeling guilt for some of what he's done and trying to atone for it, doesn't absolve him from his underlining belief in my eyes.

This. I didn't discover Mass Effect until like Thanksgiving of last year, so i didn't see the little videos for the characters they have until the last few months. Thane's paints the picture of a remorseless killer, while his first appearance in the game shatters that to pieces. And his philosophy of I-didn't-do-wrong doesn't work for me. Tell that to all of the people who've been ordered to do illegal things by their employers and gotten busted for it.

Don't get me wrong, I think he's awesome; he's the only male in the game I'll let my femshep romance. But there are inconsistent places, like every other character.

And is Thane emo? Depends on your definition of emo. If your definition is someone who cuts their wrists, of course not. But if it's someone who's life has genuinely sucked and their view of the world is dismal (like myself), you might say he is.

Thane is too helpful to be emo.
