As far as we know, they're both thoroughly "mixed," along with the rest of the Mass Effect human populous.



Although from what I recall, Ashley's writer once specified that she was at least part Hispanic (she looks Native American to me, but I have a bad eye for this kind of thing). Kaidan is a name in at least three languages and a compound word in a third, he's from Canada, and multiple people have suggested that there's some middle European influence going on there.

I think they're supposed to look ethnic in an undefined sort of way. Implying that in the future ethnicities will be more mixed than they are now.

Well, Ash is a spacer, so has no nationality at all. And I thought kaidan was from singapore or something.

Kaidan looks vaguely Native American, in my opinion. And Ash is definitely Mediterranean, either Spanish or possibly Balkan.

Well, if we're going by surnames, Ash has an Anglo background while Kaidan is of Ukrainian extraction. If you go by appearances, you'll probably end up with very different conclusions. Needless to say they're both likely of mixed ancestry.

Ethno-ambiguous? I dunno. They both struck me as "mixed", or as my friend likes to say "mutts". Aside from Ash's lips and Kaidan's skin tone, neither have any terribly distinguishing features in that regard. I kinda figure that Ashley has at least some Hispanic or Latino in her, and when I write her I sort of base hers and my Shepard's relationship on the one between Dr. Brennan and Angela from Bones, with Ash being Angela. I doubt anyone else sees it that way, but it works for me!

I got the impression from various comments and fan arts that Kaidan is Canadian. I mean, I've seen him waving around Canada flags...

I'm pretty sure that in one of the conversations, he mentions his father being from Vancouver (or somewhere else in BC, I can't remember), so that would suggest he's Canadian.
It's when he's talking about Vyrnnus and BAaT.

I don't remember Kaidan mentioning exactly where it was he grew up. But I only play male Shepards and therefore have never romanced him, so I may have missed out on some dialogue that way. Although I think it's safe to say that he grew up in North America, due to his accent. No clue about his specific ethnic origin though. I've never heard the names "Kaidan" or "Alenko" in real life anywhere. Also, I think it's safe to assume that Ashley has English ancestry somewhere, judging by her surname.
