And you expected what, a thousand NPCs filling the city? There are clearly people around in most of the city areas. I don't need to feel like I'm stuck in Kolkata.
For the most part it looked like a ghost town, a lack of ambiance in the video in general, loved the city art however... but the game world looks barron empty and and almost lifeless. I don't need to feel as if I am in Calcutta either, but what I seen in that video was disappointingly sparse to empty.

YUCK. Brown, brown, brown aaaaand...Light brown. What the hell happened to the vibrant colors Origin's had? Is this Dragon Age or Gears of DragonAge? Maybe if I delude myself that I am playing a Dune based game then it'll be better.
Everything just looks so bland and uninspiring.
Actually Gears had more color than what I seen in Kirkwall.

You guys can stop blaming BioWare for the lack of NPC's. That's how it is these days. Blame consoles and their 256MB of RAM.
Then explain the cities in Assassin's creed.

Yet I can say that Assassin Creed 2 is not only a better looking game but has more people than DA2. Stop blamimg consoles for everything/

Assassin's creed is one big map and assets are streamed as needed. Different engine. There's no streaming in Dragon Age, you load everything into memory at once. So that area behind the building which you can't see is still loaded into memory. RPG's work differently from action adventure games.
Summary: consoles.

Indeed, a realistic economy demands 6 prostitutes on every street corner, plus a thief and a mercenary to match.

Considering reviews have been saying they've rectified DAO's perceived blandness, I wouldn't be too worried.

Your argument previously said that the consoles cannot handle that many NPCs, so blame them instead. And now you are saying it's because the engines are different. Are you now saying that the engine is at fault now?

Stop with the bs. Even JRPGs on the Wii like Last Story can have a town full of wandering NPCs.
The issue here is all of these RPGs that have vibrant cities like the Witcher, Fable games, Bethesda's RPGs, FFXII, etc, all have the player controlling one character in these hubs. Bioware choose to have a full party in towns in their games and can't deal with the pathfinding, so they strip out wandering NPCs for convenience.

Might as well tell him that up is down and black is white, there is just no arguing with someone who has decided to blame all his woes on one thing.Aumata wrote...

Yes, consoles are at fault. You'll be pleased to know that a mod will probably come out on PC that will add tons of NPC's to the empty areas.

That's nice. JRPGs are nice. The Wii is nice. And I'm sure that the textures are comparable to Dragon Age 2 textures, and I'm sure they take up as much memory. But let's compare it to something relevant, like say, Fallout: New Vegas. The developers stated that the reason why New Vegas was so barren was because of console memory limits. And guess what, mods came out that not only made a once-loading-screen-infested area completely contiguous, but it also added a bunch of NPCs.
Or you guys can just assume that BioWare purposely made the areas empty to ****** you off.

Agreeing with this poster, it's not like the city is completely dead or something.

The last game urban based game I played was Assassin's Creed II.

at around 2:15-2:20 you can hear Anders say "this is my favorite part", which was one of his battle lines from awakening, so maybe he hasn't changed to much =)
btw i actually like the look of Kirkwall, only complaint is that you'd expect more people, but nothing game breaking
