I've been away from the game for about 9 months but I'm going to start a new playthrough soon and I want to see if anything has changed since the last time I've played.

Mine's are (err....were):

assault rifle - vindicator (though I hear the mattock is really good)
sniper rifle - incisor
shotgun - eviscerator
heavy pistol - carnifex
submachine gun - locust

Help me out and post your weapon of choice of each type for squadmates.

Assault Rifle - Vindicator or Mattock = Lately I've seen pretty good success with squadmates using the Mattock. If you're using Squad Cryo Ammo, then I highly recommend the Mattock as its 1 shot freeze.

Sniper Rifle - Incisor = *IF* you've got the Incisor its pretty much the clear cut winner. If not, honestly I prefer using the Mantis/Widow for squadmates, unless using Squad Cryo Ammo, to which then the Viper 1 shot freeze wins.

Shotguns - Eviscerator or Geth Pulse Shotgun = Ammo effects seem to be better on the Evi, however the GPS does seem to add much higher squad effectiveness at range. I typically just stick with the GPS.

Pistols - Carnifex = Phalanx seems to be too slow RoF on squadmates, and damage is too weak with the Predator on squadmates.

SMG - Depends

Locust - Worth considering if you're going to face armored opponents and prefer squadmates surviving more than damage.

Tempest - Best damage easily. Squadmates are beasts with the Tempest, but they also hang out of cover FOREVER with the gun blasting away despite being shot at. If you generally play aggressively and take most of the enemy fire yourself, then its Tempest without question.

Shuriken - Best squadmate survivability. If your squad is more there for helping you out with powers you may prefer to roll with Shuriken equiped squadmates. Hardcore/Insanity you will notice a lot more frequent cover from your squadmates using these weapons. If you're using squad cryo its just as effective (since your squad is more there for freezing enemies than pure damage alone).

Really its only the SMG's that are particularly debatable, generally the Tempest wins though.

Ares pretty much nailed it.

The only thing I'd add is that you should have Grunt packing an Eviscerator rather than a Geth Pulse Shotgun since you can give him a Mattock or Vindicator for ranged combat and the extra damage and stopping power of the Eviscerator will be more useful at very close range.

For Tali, Jack and Jacob I think the Geth Pulse Shotgun is the better choice since having them use a pistol at range will limit the damage they can lay down.

Actually if you're planning on using Grunt a lot, IMO it's better to research and get him the Claymore. It does the most damage per shot, and since squadmate have infinite ammo, the low capacity is not a problem. Rate of fire is low but in my experience squadmates never fire the shotgun more than one each time they leave cover so this shouldn't be a problem either. Just make sure to set his waypoint as close to the enemy as possible.

I disagree Sigma.

In theory Grunt should be doing more damage with the Claymore; but in practice your allies rarely get close enough to be within the Claymore's effective range and in Grunt's case if he gets that close he's probably going to charge and just run over his enemy.

If the squad AI knew how to use shotguns properly then the Claymore would be the way to go with Grunt; but since the squad AI doesn't realize that it needs to get in really close to use most shotguns allies will always do better with longer range shotguns like the Eviscerator or the Geth Pulse Shotgun.

you may hate the carniflex, but your squad doesn't. Use the phalanx for your shepard if you want but you definitely want the carniflex in the hands of your squad, not the phalanx. as stated above, RoF on squaddies is just too low w/ phalanx

Used to be, everyone with assault rifles gets a Mattock. Now, through the power of gibbed, everyone gets a light machine gun.
