My (calm, measured, and detailed) concerns about DA2 (that have absolutely nothing to do with The Witcher 2)/An open letter to BioWare

I kind of agree with the poster.  It's like DA has lost a teensie bit of it's soul.

The darkspawn do not look any scarier to me, they look more cartoonish.  There was nothing wrong with the old darkspawn, and their concept was done very well.

As for the manga-ish feel, I agree totally.  All I think of when I see 2H Hawke is how ENORMOUS the sword is, and then I think of Final Fantasy.  Bioware, I'm glad you're trying to pull from different influences, and I think the art palette and some of the different character makeovers (read: Qunari) are really well done.  But in other ways I feel like DA HAS lost some of it's real-world grittiness (I also realize DA-world isn't real, but you get my drift).

I'm hoping that when I play the actual game this will seem less apparent to me, and I won't think of Final Fantasy everytime I see strapping MHawke with a sword that is bigger than him. ;)

King calian + every other two handed weapon in Origins, your opinion and posts from now on are invalid.

....right.

I didn't realize how much power and clout you had around here to simply invalidate my posts.  ^_^

Most 2handers in real life are 5'+ in length, you are disqualified.

The OP wrote a really good feedback post. I don't agree with some of it, but I do understand and respect everything the OP is saying. He's certainly entitled to feel that way, and has expressed his views in a constructive way that doesn't deserve rude "TLDR" trolling. It would be great to see more feedback like the OP's in this thread, as well as Maria's from her 2-hander thread.

Not to jump into the discussion you fellows are having, but I don't think you can generalize that much.  Most pure two handed swords were 42" or shorter, and the longswords (which, despite RPGs, were primarily used two handed) were somewhere around 36", give or take a few barleycorns.  Any sword designed for normal combat, even the two handers, were somewhere around 3-4lbs.

The really long (6 footish)  2-Handed swords people think of are mostly German Zweihanders, a specialized two handed Renaissance weapon used to break up pike formations.  The soldiers got double pay to surge forward and use the swords to knock the long pikes out of the way.  Of course, they would no doubt use it as a direct weapon if push came to shove.  So to speak.  It's not Oakshotte referenced, but if Wikipedia can be believed (big if, I know), they ranged from 2 to 3.2 kg.

I'm referencing Oakshott typology here--  if you're interested in swords, that's the most widely used classification system, and well worth looking at.

Of course, videogame and movie sword fighting has nothing to do with the real thing.  But big swords and jumping up on top of dragon's heads is spiff, so there you go.

If you think the 2H sword is bigger than in DAO you are mistaken.
