So why is Dragon Age 2 being criticized as a button masher?

This is probably an old topic, but I checked the last several pages and didn't come across one, so...

I'm kind of puzzled by this. In Dragon Age Origins, you attack enemies by right clicking on them and you use skills and abilities by hotkey or mouse. In Dragon Age 2, you attack enemies by right clicking on them and you use skills and abilities by hotkey or mouse. So...what has changed exactly? Besides the new flashy, over the top animations in Dragon Age 2?

Button pushing should be taken out of all games from now on.

People would argue that faster speed makes it a button masher.

I am not one of those people.

Gameplay is basically the same, just a little sped up. That's about the only change to gameplay. The animations may be different, but that's a different issue all together. I think there is something wrong with the console versions that requires them to hit the A button to swing their swords or something. But I don't play the demo on a console, so I have no idea.

I think most people are referring to the autoattack not being automatic in the demo as "button mashing" which is not correct, but what the hey.

as far as I'm aware this thing is about the console version of the game, not the PC version.

They just playa hatin'. It's every bit as tactical as Origins, but people are too lazy to mash buttons. Kinda sad.

Faster pace means it plays more like Diablo than DA. Button mashing is just people taking it to extremes, button mashing won't get you very far it's not a beat em up.Autoattack is disabled in the PS3 version, lot's of pushing X but I don't really class that as button mashing.

I don't think DIablo comparison is valid.  DIablo is fairly slow.

Agree with your second point.

I remember when I first played DA:O I was surprised when I discovered that I didn't have to press A every time I wanted to attack

I would always press it every time anyway.

''Too lazy to mash buttons''? Maybe some people would prefer auto-attack to mashing one button millions of times during the story. Laziness has nothing to do with that choice.

The speed of combat and the push to attack for auto attack is locked for the consoles, so it feels more like a hack and slash than it really is. I've heard similar things said about the console version of Origins but it's totally possible to play tactically; you just have to play tactically. If you run around, don't pause, spam only a few abilities, and frantically attack everything in sight without paying much attention, then of course you'll think it's a button masher. Granted, the temptation to do so is greater on consoles because of all the buttons being right underneath your fingers.

I did that at first, but got annoyed enough at my character's constant chattering about it

Apparently "button masher" is anything without auto attack. So by this definition, FFXIII is a button masher, all fighting games are button mashers too.

This.  I button mashed in origins, even though it didn't do anything.

Similiar to BG etc. Background clock ticks off your attacks rather than you actively pushing buttons. Except for things with cooldowns.

Attacks are pretty much instant now so I'd find it strange not to be pushing X. Star Ocean PS2 I think I got a trophy for pushing x 100,000,000 times..
