So why is Dragon Age 2 being criticized as a button masher?

They just playa hatin'. It's every bit as tactical as Origins, but people are too lazy to mash buttons. Kinda sad.
''Too lazy to mash buttons''? Maybe some people would prefer auto-attack to mashing one button millions of times during the story. Laziness has nothing to do with that choice.
We have a word for that preference: Lazy

Same here, it was just instinct. Press A to attack. Had to hold myself back by limiting the amount of times I hit it lolfighterchicks wrote...

I would always press it every time anyway.
This. I button mashed in origins, even though it didn't do anything.

THE IMMERSION, IT IS BROKEN AND IT CANNOT BE FIXED!!!!
I did like the tactical side of origins that you can pause and kind of slow down and think about a strategy, but button mashing just makes it feel like I'm contributing more as opposed to strictly auto-attack. I'm just glad it's faster this time around so my button mashing isn't fruitless.

Combination of people talking about the changes to the extreme, ignorance and the exaggerated start which imo, doesnt help the case.
DA2 combat is just a more fluid DAO combat.

From my experience with the xbox version you have to tap "A" a lot but you have to use tactics as well otherwise you have a quick and gruesome death...especially if you play as a mage or a rogue with lower armor rating
I play on the PS3 but I've never really used tactics. I do program the AI though, so that could be why my team works without much input.

For some reason I believe that these complaints (for the consoles anyway) wouldn't exist if standard attack was remapped to the right trigger.
Just a thought.
Please leave it where it is.... Triggers are great for FPS, but face buttons work better for action/rpgs messing around with that without making it an option would be very bad.

It's being criticized because on the consoles you have to actively press a button to attack, essentially mashing either the A or X button. I actually liked it, I felt it worked much better for a controller, but people are picky ****es.
Picky? No. We expect the same kind of quality as in the first game. If they would have made Origins into a button mashing game and kept it as such in DA2, it would have been fine. To change it to a smasher now, when Origins didn't require such methods in combat would have been an big annoyance to most fans. Thankfully, you can toggle auto-attack on/off.

I agree but I think because you're just mashing one button over and over some people find it a little boring. To be fair to BioWare, I did do the exact same thing with warriors and rogues in Origins aswell so I don't really understand how there is a complaint that it is a problem with this game in particular.

Well first reaction was what the hell.. But I got over it pretty quick and it really is an improvement over DA. Except they felt the need to also make the game easier, turn off FF and make everything explode like a cartoon. The faster combat is catching the flack for those things from a lot of people even though it's not direcltly responsible.

Moving cancels autoattack. Sometimes being hit cancels auto attack. Sometimes the auto attack just stops for no apparent reason.

Don't know where you picked that up as its never happened to me in the demo.

Because if you have to press even one button to battle it's a button-masher. Only battles that can be fought using psychic waves aren't button mashers
This is what I'm saying. The only direction to go is to take out the buttons, then video games will be perfect!

I have no idea why, but somehow pressing A to attack broke the atmosphere and immersion during the combat.

So... It's a preference thing, if you have played and enjoy mostly real-time/action games that require a button to be pushed every time your character / avatar does something, whether those games have been, Street Fighter, Golden Axe, COD whatever, then you get to a game like DA:O and go huh? What's the point? This is boring... I want to have to push buttons.
But if you've mostly played and enjoy games like Baldurs Gate, NWN, Civilizations, DA:O where you're used to setting things up, monitoring what's happening, adjusting as necessary, and you land in the console version of DA2 with auto-attack disabled, you go.. what the heck happened to one of my favourite games!!! This is a button masher! *run away, run away*
I think this accurately captures the phenomena. I for one eagerly look forward to what console play feels like with that holy auto-attack toggle turned on. March 8th, come on!
It could very well be that the new animations are simply too distracting, and combat is too fast for the paradigm of setting things up, monitoring what's happening, adjusting as necessary to feel right in DA2... But we shall see!
