Hi guys,

EDIT: I errorneously stated that cutscenes were stuttering, as well - this is NOT the case; only dialogue scenes experience these short freezes (stuttering).

I've been playing DA:O for a long time now with a lot of mods, and the game has always ran smoothly.  However, starting just a few days ago, I've noticed that dialogue scenes & cutscenes would be a bit choppy (visualize 2-3 seconds of smooth cutscene interlaced with half-second freezes).  These freezes are really short, but they do disrupt the flow of the cutscenes and dialogues.  Furthermore, these freezes don't happen as soon as I start a game, rather they occur a few minutes into my gameplay.

FYI, I am using JBTextures, Improved Atmosphere, and Dragon Age Redesigned, but they've been installed for quite a few months now with no problems.

My spec (with latest drivers):
Intel Core i5-750 OC'd @ 3.2GHz
8GB G. Skill Ripjaws
XFX Radeon HD 5850 1GB
Windows 7 64-bit

Thanks!

Sorry you're having problems. It may be a bit difficult to diagnose problems if the game is heavily modded... just because mods worked in one situation doesn't mean they can't cause problems in another. But setting side that for a moment, here are a few things you can try:

1) DAO doesn't like overclocked CPUs or GPUs. While other games may be relatively stable under overclocking conditions, DAO's proprietary engine doesn't. Consider running your CPU at normal speed and see if that is any better. In my experience with the game, freezes (as opposed to crashes) usually indicate a CPU is bottlenecking the rest of the system.

2) You're developing an overheating problem. This may or may not be related to overclocking. Or, if you're system has been running hot for a while, you may be developing a heat-related fault. Consider using a free program like CPUID HW Monitor to track your temperatures during gameplay. It could be that the system is automatically throttling back to protect itself.

3) Review what's running in the background or what's loading at Windows start up. Review what you've installed on the computer lately that may have added a service, etc that could be stealing processing power away from the game.

There are a lot more links on the site about improving game performance, including the Windows pagefile. There's a link in my sig to a recent roundup of such.

Good luck!

Haha I guess I have my answer, then. I did recently OC my i5 from stock to ~3.2GHz. But all my over games are fine with this except for DA:O, but it's kind of a hassle to restore my clock speed just for one game.

I hear ya.  Consider, though, that DAO is very CPU-heavy, it does a lot of math calculations constantly.  And it uses its own engine... so its hard to compare it to other games, including other Bioware titles.  I found Mass Effect 2 was no where near as buggy as DAO... buggy may not be the right word... sensitive.

Depending on your motherboard, your bios may allow you to create specific OC profiles that you can select on booting up the computer.  I know my Asus board does this... though I've never tried it.

Best,

RI

I'm using the Asus P7P55D Pro, maybe I'll look it up. Thanks!

Well whatever is causing the freezes/hiccups, it's not the overclock. I just reset the mobo to stock configuration and the dialogue scenes are still freezing for a fraction of a second every 1-2 seconds. I also tried uninstalling (via damodder) the most recent mods I've acquired.

I had similar problems with my old computer. The problems appeared when my computer got quite hot. The fact you have over clocked probably contributes to this. Depending on your cooling, you may be able to sort this out without changing the speeds to normal.

Hmm, I checked coretemp while running DA:O and the temperatures on my four cores never gets past 48C on 95% load - isn't this well within acceptable levels?

Also, it seems installing JBTextures without the two later patches seems to have helped quite a bit. There are still a few dialogue scenes that stutter a bit, but overall it's been much better.

Perhaps reinstalling DA:O and reapplying all my mods might help, too?

I must be slipping in my old age... I didn't even ask about mods. If you're modding up the game, all bets are off. I don't know if reinstalling DA:O will provide any benefit *if* you just install all the mods back into the game.

Some mods may have been created before the last patch came out in July or August of 2010... so who knows how that would affect them, or for that matter, how they affect each other.

The thing is, I was running the game perfectly fine a few weeks ago even with all the mods I have installed. I did add a couple weapon mods these few days, but uninstalling them didn't seem to help any.

The other possibility is that JBTextures has always caused these freezes and I simply didn't notice them before (unlikely, but possible).

Well, I completely uninstalled JBTextures, and the dialogue freezes still persists. I'm too lazy right now to completely reinstall the game, so I guess I'll simply leave it alone and wait for DA2.

OK, another update. It seems that the freezes aren't limited to dialogue scenes, but also to gameplay as well. Upon closer inspection, it seems that the freezes in both dialogue and gameplay doesn't start immediately, but rather after a battle or about 10-15 minutes of gameplay. I'm afraid this is probably the dreaded memory leak that others have reported before. Strange that I have not noticed it before.

I'm contemplating reinstalling DA:O entirely - would keeping the game save files allow me to jump right back in afterwards?
