I have an ASUS G71G gaming laptop (I know, I know... Laptop :(  ). It has an Intel Core 2 Duo 2.53 Ghz (but overclocks 25%). It has 6GB of RAM and a 1GB NVIDIA 260M running Windows 7 64bit.

So far I've pretty much been able to play every game I want to on high settings or better (Mass Effect 2, Bad Company 2, Dragon Age: Origins, the Witcher, and a bunch of others), and I was wondering if I would even be able to run this one on high (not Very High, that's probably waaay out of my computer's reach). The demo has issues whenever I try to run it on high, but I've heard that a lot of people have that problem, so I can't conclusively say that I cannot run it.

Any help would be appreciated, and thanks in advance for any response.

The problem with the demo is not running it on High, it's running it with DX11.

Since the 260M isnt compatible with DX11, the problems you experienced might simply be related to your hardware.

High settings and 1080p are probably not possible.

You will probably be able to run it well with 0xAA and some High/Medium settings.

What resolution are you running it at?

1440x900.

It's not that the demo doesn't run well on high, it's that the demo crashes every time I try to run it with DX11 (I know my card doesn't support it, but there's no option for DX10 to run the game above Medium). It runs fine on Medium settings, but I was simply wondering if I would be able to run it if I turned off some of the dynamic lighting or tessellation.

Basically, I want the game to run better than the PS3 version, so if I can get it to do that, then I'll get it for PC.

I believe not, due to bioware trying to work with the lowest common denonimator (consoles)

shame, really

A Geforce 260m? Yes, you should be able to run it on "High". Your card seems to be powerful enough, and it can run DirectX 10, which is what the "High" setting needs. You won't be able to run "Very High"; you need a fully DirectX 11 compatible card to even select "Very High".

Sadly, the DirectX 10/11 renderer, which the "high" setting uses, is bugged in the demo, as stated by the developers. So don't take the crashing as indicative of your laptop being unable to run the "high" setting. It should do fine when the full game comes out.

Until then, try disabling V-Sync. That solved crashing problems for me.

I wish people on this forum would stop saying this. DirectX 10 hardware is compatible with DirectX 11. It doesn't support all features, but it can definitely run Dragon Age II on high. Some features, like Tesselation, are DX11 hardware exclusive but I can see the imrpoved DX11 lighting and cloud shadows on My Directx 10 hardware.

But there's a difference between 'run' and 'run smoothly'. My guess is the 260m is probably too slow.

Why does it say on the "Render:" thing Directx 9 and Directx 11 (if available) is there really no Directx 10 option?

Okay so i looked at my Video Card settings. I clicked System information and it said "Directx version: 11" is there a way to revert it to directx 10? because my video card cant support x11 i don't know why its even set as 11. I thinks that's the reason my Dragon Age 2 crashes.(it reads that i have x11 so it tries to run it on X11 but it can't. Help!

In Dx9, there is no "High", and there are only two renderer settings, the Dx9 one, and for Dx10 / 11 both, the Dx11 setting.  In order to run the Windows APIs in Dx10, you must have Vista or Windows 7.

Yeah, I saw that there was no high setting and when i scrolled over the "high" setting it said that i had to have Directx 10 which i do have, but when i set it to Directx 11 the game doesn't start. By the way i use Windows 7 and i think my problem is because i have Directx 11 installed on my PC.

The game should be installing whatever it needs. I'm in the wrong room to be sure of that, however (I should be able to see the Dx Setup for the APIs).

There are four graphical elements in software that must be cooperating with one another. Drivers are easiest to check, just R & R them, and retest, after that, try installing DirectX, retest. If necessary, uninstall the game, then reinstall and retest.

Last of all is to R & R PhysX, the least likely suspect. (R & R, if it's not universal any more, is Remove and Replace.)
