Haven't seen this come up but it's been bugging me.  Why is Sten the only character in the game that can do only one specialization?  I've honestly never understood it, my first playthrough I myself was a 2-handed War so never brought him along.  This time same deal as i just can't find a place for him for some reason (Next playthrough is gonna be a tank so Sten can FINALLY come).  Am I just missing something with him?  There some kind of encounter that unlocks something GREAT with him like with Wynne?

Same question...

It's really lame... and the sword you get form his quest is pretty weak, unless you can upgrade it from another quest later or something... I don't know.

I got like 10 hours into a playthrough and I did Sten's quest and tried to get to know him but the lack of specialization thing seems a real hindrance.

The bonus of Sten is the fact you can pick his specialization (assuming you have unlocked them in previous games) almost as soon as you get him. The only thing you can unlock for him is his special sword.

He makes an excellent Reaver (again assuming you've unlocked Reaver from a previous game)

No he dosen't get a specialization point at level 7, you have to wait untill level 14.  And even then he only has one compared to everyone elses two, wich makes him subpar in comparison.  At least thats how it is on the PC version, I'm really hoping it is a bug that will get fixed here soonish.

Relhart said exactly what I mean, only ONE Spec. If there was something special with him (Higher Damager being what he is) or something like that it would make sense. As it is, he's just slightly behind everyone else.  There basically isn't a reason to bring him instead of Oghren for your party, I WANT to have this Giant using a sword bigger than I am at my backside, feels more intimidating than a drunken dwarf.  Given, Oghren has better lines but still.

Take Oghren instead, he's better.

I never saw a real problem..Sten is an excellent choice..if you want him..the lack of the second specialization doesn't make him subpar..just put the points you would normally have spent elsewhere..Specializations aren't required...it is indeed possible to play the game without them..

Hmm, perhaps you do not understand the meaning of subpar? Yes you can certainly play the game without specializations but your character is made better even by simply taking them(bonus stats). By not having even the option to simply pick up the bonus stats on the spec let alone any of the skills Sten is not as good as Alistar or Oghren which is what it means to be subpar.

No I understand that he's still very usable without, my thoughts are that once you get Oghren it's not huge, but a 2nd spec for Oghren makes me wonder why to bring Sten other than RP reasons.

Shale and the dog don't even get one specialization.

While true, Shale has very good/unique armor/weapons choices that can be tailored per fight, that's HIGHLY useful. Meanwhile Dog (Ed in my game) is not only able to find items for you in zones, overwhelm is a death sentence for Casters, he's moves VERY quick in combat, and his combat effectiveness actually improves once you find the Landmarks for him in a zone.  Sten has nothing lilke what Shale/Dog have.

***SPOILERS***

1. Talk to Sten about his lost sword. He'll have to like you a bit first.
2. Head to Lake Calenhad Docks (beside the Mage Tower) and look for a scavenger immediately to your left as you zone in. Talk to him.
3. Head to the gates (outdoors) of Orzimmar and talk to the human merchant there. I forgot his name but he's the one that acts sketchy when Sten is in your party.
4. Head to Redcliffe Village and talk to Dwyn. He's the dwarf locked inside his house. Get the key from Dwyn and grab Sten's sword from the chest in the back room.
5. Kill stuff.

I did go to the Docks because it said so in the journal but found nothing there.Does the scavenger appear only the first time you visit the area and I missed him somehow?

I thought it was because unlike other companions, he didn't start with a specialization.
