I think he has higher attributes than the other characters. So he doesn't get the attribute bonus from a specialisation but is already stronger, and the only other loss is that you can't put points into specialisation skills. But I'm not entirely sure, I didn't count attribute points, it just seemed that he was much stronger than Alistair at that point. I used him as my tank in the only game I completed, he's not an entirely bad choice. Keep in mind that you get him fairly early too so he won't have too many points invested into attributes or skills that are useless as characters you get later, thanks to the silly auto-leveling.

I wasn't aware the landmarks were used if you had Dog on your party, LOL thanks for the tip even though this thread is about Sten.

Because he's neither a templar, berserker, reaver or champion- I think it's because of RP/Lore purposes. To be honest I never really thought much about it since he only got 1-2 talents over in the end.

Maybe the fact that he is a silent, stoic and unhumanly patient Qunari Warrior counts as a specialization (at least for the developers)?

Hmm. A balance issue perhaps because strength is his relationship bonus? I haven't used him with the reaver spec. yet...

Perhaps there should be a Quanri Ranger sort of Specialization just for Sten...
Imagine him talking to a rodent... I'd like that...

anyone know how to get this guy happy to talk with you?

I have a hard time talking with this guys. It seems everything I say lowers his approval rating. I want to do his quest, do I need a certain approval to get it?

In conversation with him be blunt and get to the point, he appreciates that.

He doesn't appreciate rude.

Give him every painting you find.

He likes that.

Don't instantly agree with him, be inquisitive but still respect his personal borders and give him found cake.

He is the one I liked talking to the most.

Sten also starts with a Unique Race. Maybe that is the balancing factor.

and Oghren starts with one too.

i never brought Sten with me because of that i find him subpar like people mentioned compared to the others and Ohgren is funnyer, maybe Sten is funny too but i dont know never played with him much , or maybe it s a bug and he s supposed to have 2 specs but they forgot about it

Oghren's race is dwarf isn't it?

Nothing special about that.

To be honest, those few extra attribute points you get from a specialization is hardly game breaking when it comes to picking your party members. I don't know if his stats are higher otherwise, but I can't imagine picking one character over another just because of a stat difference of two points or so. That said, Oghren seemed like more fun for my first playthrough. Sten can come some other time.

Sten is a warrior plain and simple, as far as the attributes he starts with more so he isn't subpar, He actually makes a good 2h tank because he doesn't have the extra spec to waste points into.

But honestly I think the reason behind him only having one spec is because of the fact that he is a warrior not a champ or a templar or a reaver or a zerker but a warrior.

My problem isn't conversations with him, it's that he hates everything I do. Save the mages? -15. Save the little boy? -10. Save Redcliffe? -10. I don't know if it's normal (I never used him my first play) but he even attacked me at one point. I've just managed to keep him more or less neutral.

He does attack you when climbing the mountain in the middle of nowhere.

If you handle that correctly, though, you do end up with a significant approval bonus.

Sten prefers the direct approach most of the time. (I can see why he doesn't like saving the mages, given the Qunari attitude towards magic.)

Attitude toward the mages? the Qunari basically leave any with the magic gift as a torso and head barely alive...

I got +7 out of it.  Is that the best possible or no?  He told me we were wasting time, I told him we weren't, and I'm in charge here, he said he was taking over, and I kicked his butt and told him to get in line.

I did laugh at the idea of an NPC leading the party, though.

It seems like in general approval goes up a lot more slowly than it goes down.  Handling the situation in Redcliffe the "nice" way with the cirlce gains a few points with Alistair, and the "wrong" way loses up to 15, I think.

i had a +33 once just by talking with him. you can also gain his approval by pointing others to their duty in npc dialogues.

Except Sten is more like the anti-Minsc.  And Sten probably wouldn't even go for the eyes.
