Not a fan of many of the new stylistic art changes, but I definitely do like the new qunari.

the new qunari are probably the best artistic design change they've made to anything so far form what ive seen.
in DA:O i actually just thought they were an oddly large group of darkskinned humans with a crazy culture rather than a full on completely other race.
yeah, sure it might be a retcon but sometimes retcons are a good thing.

It's not a retcon - the qunari we encountered were the exception to the rule. Sten and his comrades were selected to learn about the Blight due to their being hornless: a sign that they are meant for great things, and something which allows them to draw less attention to themselves. Likewise, the mercs we encounter are those who abandoned the Qun, possibly due to pressure felt regarding the special fate of the hornless.
Ah but it still doesn't work. If that were so all those qunari we met still should have had the sloped forward heads and necks as well as the huge neck muscles needed for sporting the large horns. Those kind of genetic traits wouldn't go away just from having horns removed or even from being a birth 'defect' (?) of being born without them.
If this were true when they were making the models for DAO they would have had that bone/muscle structure, but they didn't. Thus, while it may have been true at the conceptual stage, it was not true during the game of DAO and was then changed back to an earlier design for DA2.
Personally while I think horned humanoids look cool I'm not a fan of the change in the qunari design. I was under the mistaken impression in DAO that Qunari were another race of humans and the people of the game world treated them as a different, monstrous race, because of their different culture and their tendency to be quite large. I thought this was DA having another little commentary on racism... but no they really are a totally different race, now with enormous horns. The idea that those born looking more human like are considered 'destined for great things' kind of gives me unfortunate-implications vibes.
While impressive looking I'm not a fan of DA2's tendency to go for the more EXTREME!!!! design options. Hopefully the game itself with still have some subtlety.
I dunno, in DA:O every mention of the Qunari talks about the bronzed skinned giants. And some characers, such as Murdoc in Redcliff Village, didn't even know that Sten was a Qunari. How else could they move through other nations without entire populations freaking out? I also liked the idea that they were just a different ethnicity or metahuman race as the poster above.
Now they are blue. Baby blue, light blue, greyish blue maybe. But seriously, blue.

Soz guys but i was looking at an old(ish) interview with Mike Laidlaw (lead designer for DA2) and the las question is:
">should we keep our saved games for dragon age III?"
"ML:Oh my yes."
-NAG
so we will have a continuation of DA2 in DA3...therefore still no hope for playing as a qunari.

I think the change is technically a retcon... But they at least tried to justify it.

Personally, I feel like the DA 2 Qunari are more monstrous draenei from World of Warcraft.
I really don't like redesigning all of them. If they had made it that some Qunari look more human, some less, I'd be okay with it, but the biggest thing I don't like...it belittles the Blight.
When Darkspawn create a brood mother from Qunari, you get ogres. The transformation to the even larger size with monstrous faces, huge teeth, and those horns really show a transformation. Now...okay, so qunari brood mothers just make larger, uglier qunari. Woopee...
I'm also not a fan of the skeletor zombie darkspawn either, though. Nor of the bad arse battle maiden version of Flemeth. /shrug
Personal tastes, I guess
