Whats up guys 'n gals - I'm on a mission, and I think you all can help.

Believe it or not, I've been on these forums for quite some time...~'04 back on the old BG forums, under the username 'dragontoothdw' since '06.  I've obviously made my new home here with a new username, but i generally jump on the BG forums only when I decide to play through (yet again)...if i never left, I'd never feel like playing again.  But that special time has come, and this time around I'd like to catalog as much lore and info as possible.  I've installed both games, with expansions, patched, mod-free, and I have the original game manuals for both, and I'm aware of a few sites with lots of information (such as dudleyville), but there is not now, nor has there ever been, a real complete collection of information...

This fact has re-affirmed a desire to create a BG wikia.  For those of you who don't know, wikia is a community run wikipedia that seems to be ever-evolving.  Baldurs Gate has had a few mentions in the past, but never a devoted wikia - until now; a few comments of mine on a social network inspired a wikia staff member to create it and set up a very basic layout...under the presumption that i would dive in and start improving it.  So, I'd obviously like to start filling it in...if you arn't aware of how daunting a task this is, just compare it against a more recent popular Bioware title:  BG's Wikia (8 pages) <-> Mass Effects Wikia (1,862 pages).   ...so, my goal is to have BG's looking even better than Mass Effects - it is a larger and more detailed game, afterall.  If this is too much for you, no worries and let this topic run you by.  If you'd like to help out without helping me personally, you certainly can - just create a wikia account and start editing.  If you'd like to help me, I'd appreciate it - as I come across questions, I'll edit the title of this thread (displaying #2, #3, etc.)...unfortunately I hit an 'unknown' right when i started BG1:

First question:  Portraits - I've matched every picture to a character except for two:

Image IPB Image IPB

...both relate to a default import character, and I remember playing the BGTrilogy mod and seeing the picture on the left used by the Illusionist who summons creep in the training house during the Prologue in Candlekeep...which caught me off guard at the time, since you couldn't even control him, but I digress since it wasn't the vanilla game anyways; the question: Do these two portraits exist in-game? ANSWERED

For a Wikia you need an exact answer of course, I can't give you that, but my guess is the portraits have a use, besides being default import characters (I have a Tutu campaign with the gnome on the right whom by default is called Koriand):

there are some portraits that serve as a backup-portrait for NPC's if you take an NPC's portrait when starting a new game. The right one is Xan's portrait if you pick Xan's portrait for yourself, or so I've read somewhere on the old forum (I happened to pick Xan's portrait on my first - and only - BG1 vanilla unmodded playthrough, I'll try to verify it for you if I can dig up the old saves).

*edit: sorry, couldn't verify what I said using my old save-games like I said I would - the game was played using the 0.8 beta version of the Widescreen Mod and I can't open them using the Widescreen mod version I have now (2.31 - don't have access to the old one no more, sorry).

The gnome portrait is GENMHLFM and pre-generated character BG1_TM. It's a secondary portrait for Cernd in BG2 and not used in BG1.

The human MAN1M appears to be a secondary portrait for Keldorn, again not used in BG1.

Thanks Gate - appreciate it.  Not sure if I'm willing to go into console codes for explanatory purposes - perhaps someone else would be willing... (having enough trouble as is with a wikia troll deleting my changes in favor of his own lesser ideas...yay internet/greed).

Question #2: Would appreciate suggestions for 3-5(each) notable "friends" and "foes" of both BG1 and BG2...

BG1 Friends: Elminster(!), Gorion(?), etc...
BG1 Foes: Sarevok, Tazok, etc...

BG2 Friends: Elhan, etc...
BG2 Foes: Firkraag, Bodhi, Irenicus, etc...

Personally I'd rather focus on stuff that can actually help players, like item/quest information etc... spell mechanics, everything that actually relates to gameplay. That's the stuff I used from ME wikia as well.

For example, I check item stats from Mike's RPG center, and it's awfully incomplete, for example, it doesn't show that Defender +5 (drizzt's scimitar) is only useable by good aligned characters etc...

Believe me, man...I'm gettin to that.  It's just taking so many man hours just to build up the basics...from there, I'll get into the particulars...hopefully...

#3: Sword Coast - I've heard it's southern most reach is the Baldur's Gate territory. ...so does that specifically make Athkatla not part of the 'sword coastline'? If so, is there a specific name for the area aside from "Amn"?

#4: Another portrait to re-discover - BG2 this time:

Image IPB

I assume this exists only for the PC, if s/he decides to go half-orc as a race. But the question - does it exist anywhere in-game?

Vanilla BG2 nonjoinable characters (usually) don't have any portraits. Notable exceptions are Quaile(!), Ellesime and the really big bad guys (Irenicus, Bodhi etc). Since there are no halforc joinables in the game, the answer to the question how much the picture is used is easily answered.

Yes, 'mighty' Taifun, no need to make me out to be a simpleton...just wanted some clarification.

Question #5: Has anyone put together a key for the BG "Sword Coast" paper map?  Jfyi, I'm talking about this

There's obviously a few giveaway symbols (like a mug of ale near a town means that the town has ale available), but there are vaguer ones (like the symbol of a store sign; what does Nashkel and Beregost have that Candlekeep and the FAI don't that could relate to that sign and no other symbol?) - and I'm not even mentioning the rediculous amount that BG(city) has.  Or what about the odd symbols next to the towns - Candle/Nask = LN, BG/Bere = LG, FAI = NG...LG might be 'Large', but what about the others, and what about the symbols?  And what about all the little symbols that don't relate to a town - most simply the difference between CE (sword and axe) and a LE (snake?) and what they could mean (E= Encounter, C= Conflict?, L= ???).  I could go on, but someone must have figured this out by now...

Didn't mean to insult you, I just like telling people how I reach a conclusion (or how they might).

That seems to be alignment.
LG = Lawful Good, CG = Chaotic Good etc...
